His parents were hard-working, religious people, but poor. A brilliant career seemed open, but in 1849 he was arrested and condemned to death. A member of a group of young men who met to read Fourier and Proudhon, he was accused of “taking part in conversations against the censorship … and of knowing of the intention to use a printing press.” After eight months in jail, he was taken to be shot. Suddenly the prisoners were informed that His Majesty had spared their lives. His sentence was commuted to hard labor: four years of penal servitude in Siberia and some years in a disciplinary battalion. In 1864 Dostoevsky lost his first wife and his brother. Though in terrible poverty, he paid his brother’s debts. The author wrote at tremendous speed and is said to never have corrected his work, which is evident in many books, especially Crime and Punishment. In June 1880 he made his famous speech at the unveiling of the monument to Pushkin in Moscow and was received with great honor. A few months later he died and a vast multitude of mourners came to the cemetery. He is still probably the most widely read writer in Russia. In the words of a Russian critic, “He was one of ourselves, a man of our blood and our bone, but one who has suffered.”

Book excerpt: The impending marriage of a Groundbreather and a Skychild is set to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity, yet there are factions on both sides that vehemently oppose such a union. While in the midst of planning their nuptials, Skye and Tierra find out just how determined these factions are. Tierra is snatched away from her home, and Skye desperately follows, gathering unlikely allies along the way and learning that trust should not be loosely given. While Skye treks across the land, seeking Tierra as well as answers to the multitude of questions that plague him, Tierra finds herself among a people she never knew existed . . . and caught up in politics that involve the very god she worships. The world Tierra thought she knew grows more complicated as she realizes that being apart from Skye is not the only trial she faces. Worse yet is the revelation that the Fenik is not the only threat to the world. And the distance that the gods have maintained from their peoples appears to be growing shorter by the day.

Nice is a dirty word and killing is what he does best. Make a contract with hell, and he could be on your side, God help you.Caine signs onto guarding the beautiful daughter of a leading Japanese industrialist. Protecting is harder than indiscriminate murder and mayhem, but gold is gold, and the prize of a mystic demon sword is dangled over his head as added incentive. Haruka will make an interesting bonus if he can get her out of her kimono—and the damn living zombies will leave them alone long enough for him to bang her.A powerful succubus is playing cat to Caine's mouse, but he has a cat of his own; a black leopard spirit beast from the Amazon jungle that's taken a liking to him—and his booze. And then there's his “father”, an ancient Atlantean demon with a code of honor. Formidable back-up, but Caine senses a greater threat lurking in the shadows, something primal, hungry, and possibly more evil than himself. He shakes his head. Nah, couldn't be.This book is intended for mature audiences.

Book excerpt: Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt is now a major motion picture (Carol) starring Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska, directed by Todd Hayes A 2010 New York Times Notable Book A 2010 Lambda Literary Award Winner A 2009 Edgar Award Nominee A 2009 Agatha Award Nominee A Publishers Weekly Pick of the Week Patricia Highsmith, one of the great writers of twentieth-century American fiction, had a life as darkly compelling as that of her favorite "hero-criminal," the talented Tom Ripley. Joan Schenkar maps out this richly bizarre life from her birth in Texas to Hitchcock's filming of her first novel, Strangers on a Train, to her long, strange self-exile in Europe. We see her as a secret writer for the comics, a brilliant creator of disturbing fictions, and an erotic predator with dozens of women (and a few good men) on her love list. The Talented Miss Highsmith is the first literary biography with access to Highsmith's whole story: her closest friends, her oeuvre, her archives. It's a compulsive page-turner unlike any other, a book worthy of Highsmith herself.

Rife with symbols of divine beings and the power of the stars, an air of mystery and superstition has long surrounded these elaborately crafted decks. When the past and the future melt together in a chaotic mind, however, they can be the only path out of a place where reality clashes with fantasies and nightmares alike. A modern day oracle, fearing the rapid approach of madness within her unquiet thoughts, dives into Olympian dreamscapes and psychological battlegrounds in a journal that serves as a road map through insanity. When she is engulfed in the darkness of the suit of swords, however, the only light to be found is fire.
