Book excerpt: Roman families were infinitely diverse, but the basis of Roman civil law was the familia, a strictly-defined group consisting of a head, paterfamilias, and his descendants in the male line. Recent work on the Roman family mainly ignores the familia, in favour of examining such matters as emotional relationships within families, the practical effects of control by a paterfamilias, and demographic factors producing families which did not fit the familia-pattern. This book investigates the interrelationship between family and familia, especially how families exploited the legal rules for their own ends, and disrupted the familia, by use of emancipation (release from patria potestas) and adoption. It also traces legal responses to the effects of demographic factors, which gave increased importance to maternal connections, and to social, such as the difficulties for ex-slaves in conforming to the familia-pattern. The familia as a legal institution remained virtually unchanged; nevertheless Roman family law underwent substantial changes, to meet the needs and desires of Roman society.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling first book in the Rose Gardner Investigation series by New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank. Trouble always comes to those who court it. Rose Gardner’s ability to see glimpses of the future has gotten her into hot water time and again, but so have her curiosity and her sense of daring. Those very qualities helped her defeat the most powerful man in Arkansas—a man so adept at hiding his crimes there was no way to defeat him inside of the law—but her success came at a steep personal price. Now she’s throwing herself into her landscaping business, trying to live a life that’s as orderly as one of her gardens. Rose’s best friend, Neely Kate, is struggling with her own losses, so when she suggests they help a local man find a missing necklace, Rose agrees. It’ll give both of them a welcome distraction, and besides, it’s a simple investigation. What harm could befall them? But things that should be simple rarely are. In seeking out the necklace, Rose and Neely Kate find themselves in the thick of a power struggle in the Fenton County underworld, one that could dethrone Rose’s friend James Malcolm, the surprisingly moral king. The last thing Rose should do is court more trouble, but she’s not the type to step away from a friend in need—and she’s also not so sure she wants an orderly life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading in the Belly of the Beast is an anthology of essays from transformational school leaders around the country who lead in a school system that is not set up for the success of their students, namely students of color and students living in poverty. The book highlights leaders who begin from the premise that the institution of school/system of education in the United States, since its inception, has been established to maintain the racial, cultural, and economic status quo – and to maintain divisions among these racial, cultural, and class groups. These leaders use this very assertion as a foundation for their transformational leadership from within the system. Leading in the Belly of the Beast includes the voices of nine educators in a variety of positions of school leadership, from principals and deans to teacher leaders. The unifying experience of these leaders is that they all currently work in the context of a school and, therefore, have authentic and fresh experiences and expertise to share. The goal of Leading in the Belly of the Beast is to emphasize the need to understand that our current system of education as not broken but as functioning to achieve exactly the results it was designed to achieve, and then to demonstrate why and how transformative leaders can and must achieve different results for students of color and students living in poverty, even while operating in the “belly of the beast”.

Book excerpt: Hearing friends talk about their ancestors and genealogical research prompted the author to wonder about her ancestors and started her on a journey that may never end. With the help of distant cousins contacted on the Internet, it was soon apparent that James Gardner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was her great-great-great-grandfather. But there the trail grew cold. Where was he born and who were his parents? Was he part of the William and Sarah Gardner family that moved from Maryland to the wild frontier of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, either before or during the Revolutionary War? Most of the descendants of James and Martha "Molly" McAnallen Gardner married, had children and brought many other surnames to the Gardner family tree. Among those surnames are Ackerman, Brinkley, Cameron, Cann, Carson, Dover, Duffy, Fehrenbach, Grossman, Harriger, Hoge, Johnson, Mansfield, Marmie, McAnallen, Mershimer, Ott, Rohrer, Shoaf, Teal, Welsh and Wimer. With the help of more research and information from yet unknown cousins, this family tree will continue to grow and spread its branches. Perhaps we will even learn about the ancestors of James Gardner.

Book excerpt: This collection has three major components. The first part is Betty Nan Gardner Nissen's genealogical records for her various family lines including: Gardner, Ellithorpe, Buck (Bosch or Busch), Dwelle, Moore, Rader, Stinson, Gintert, Pickard, and Nissen families. The second portion contains photographs, many identified, of some of these family members. Betty Nan's photograph albums which show her growing up, some of her high school activities, and vacation trips add to the interest of this collection as do approximately 85 railroad photographs. The final portion of the collection consists of Journals and Ledgers for George Ellithorpe and Son, a seller of eggs and produce, at Catawba Island in Ottawa County, Ohio. A letterhead for this firm claims it to be the largest shipper of peaches in Ohio. These business records span the years 1879-1886 and 1890-1895. George Ellithorpe was a significant investor in the Ohio Pump Company. Stock ownership records for this firm for 1904-1906 are found here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant, edgy, fresh new YA voice for fans of More Happy Than Not and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, packed with interior graffiti. Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award! When Julia finds a slur about her best friend scrawled across the back of the Kingston School for the Deaf, she covers it up with a beautiful (albeit illegal) graffiti mural. Her supposed best friend snitches, the principal expels her, and her two mothers set Julia up with a one-way ticket to a “mainstream” school in the suburbs, where she’s treated like an outcast as the only deaf student. The last thing she has left is her art, and not even Banksy himself could convince her to give that up. Out in the ’burbs, Julia paints anywhere she can, eager to claim some turf of her own. But Julia soon learns that she might not be the only vandal in town. Someone is adding to her tags, making them better, showing off—and showing Julia up in the process. She expected her art might get painted over by cops. But she never imagined getting dragged into a full-blown graffiti war. Told with wit and grit by debut author Whitney Gardner, who also provides gorgeous interior illustrations of Julia’s graffiti tags, You’re Welcome, Universe introduces audiences to a one-of-a-kind protagonist who is unabashedly herself no matter what life throws in her way. "[A] spectacular debut...a moving, beautifully written contemporary novel full of quirky art and complicated friendships...this book is a gift to be thankful for."—BookRiot
