Book excerpt: Before they were torn down in 2007, the Stateway Gardens public housing projects on Chicago's South Side were known as a hot-bed of poverty, drugs, gangs, and crime. To Tracy, a shy, intelligent young boy, they are simply home. Set in the mid-1980s, this collection of linked short stories gives an intimate look at the hopes, dreams, failures and fortunes of a group of people growing up with the deck always stacked against them. -- adapted from jacket

Book excerpt: She knew trouble when she saw it, and he was definitely trouble. After spending years dealing with her flighty mother, a café on the edge of ruin, a misbehaving backyard fountain, and tea that may or may not be increasing the libido of her elderly neighbors, Fiona Campbell has had enough. She’s ready to move out, get away from her mother and all the craziness that accompanies her, and start a life of her own. The last thing she needs is another complication, especially one like Matthew Monroe. When he walks through their door with a guitar on his back and a sexy gleam in his eyes, Fiona knows she should stay away. She doesn’t trust him, or his motives, but there is something about Matthew that draws her close, against her better judgment. And when disaster strikes, it seems he’s the only one she can turn to for help. But Matthew represents all the things she’s spent a lifetime trying to escape. She has her future mapped out in detail, including what kind of man she should date. She wants safety and predictability, but could it be that the best thing that ever happened to her is the one thing she never planned on?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 17 BCE the Han dynasty archivist Liu Xiang presented to the throne a collection of some seven hundred items of varying length, mostly quasi-historical anecdotes and narratives, that he deemed essential reading for wise leadership. Garden of Eloquence (Shuoyuan), divided into twenty books grouped by theme, follows a tradition of narrative writing on historical and philosophical themes that began seven centuries earlier. Long popular in China as a source of allusions and quotations, it preserves late Western Han views concerning history, politics, and ethics. Many of its anecdotes are attributed to Confucius’s speeches and teachings that do not appear in earlier texts, demonstrating that long after Confucius’s death in 479 BCE it was still possible for new “historical” narratives to be created. Garden of Eloquence is valuable as a repository of items that originally appeared in other early collections that are no longer extant, and it provides detail on topics as various as astronomy and astrology, yin-yang theory, and quasi-geographical and mystical categories. Eric Henry’s unabridged translation with facing Chinese text and extensive annotation will make this important primary source available for the first time to Anglophone world historians.

In Garden Voices, Carolyn Rapp explores the relationships of women with their gardens, revealing sources of joy that go far beyond the pleasure of harvesting flowers, herbs or vegetables. As the 12 women tell their stories, readers will share the heartache and triumph set within plots of lovingly cultivated land. Everyone who reads Garden Voices will hear a whisper of themselves in the words of these creative, courageous, wise women. This is not just a book for people who love gardens; it's for people who love stories.

Book excerpt: Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, discouragement, or stress of any kind? If so, you will want to read Rita Curry's book, Stories From My Garden. Rita has suffered from these same conditions, and more. In fact, according to one psychological evaluation, she was close to lapsing into a catatonic state. She has, however, made great gains in her recovery. A large part of Rita's recovery was achieved while working in her garden. As she observed the beauty there, and then listened in her heart to what the Lord Jesus was teaching her through that beauty, Rita composed the stories that you can read in her book. She says that she has been blessed with the wonderful stories, and she wants to share them with you. Each story, she says, has shown her "another facet of the Lord's love". Rita is sure that the stories will speak to you, too, and help you with your own recovery. Find hope for your difficulties and encouragement in your trials in Rita Curry's book, Stories From My Garden.

Book excerpt: A literary event—twenty short stories by the late Maeve Brennan, one of The new Yorker's most admired writers. Five are set in the author's native Dublin, a city, like Joyce's, of paralyzed souls and unexpressed love. the others are set in and around her adopted Manhattan, which she once called "the capsized city—half–capsized, anyway, with the inhabitants hanging on, most of them still able to laugh as they cling to the island that is their life's predicament." Some of the stories are quietly tender, some ferociously satirical, some unique in their chilly emotional weather. All are Maeve Brennan at her incomparable best.
