Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, language: English, abstract: "Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test: recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to Swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions. Then you will find your doubts and ... self melting away."The Mahatma had an uncanny way of making things simple to the meanest intelligence. And the test mentioned above was Gandhiji's philosopher's stone for turning into the gold of service the base metal of doubt in our work a day world. The test, at the same time, provides a very important clue towards an understanding of the Gandhi's economic and industrial philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shanti Kumar's Gandhi Meets Primetime examines how cultural imaginations of national identity have been transformed by the rapid growth of satellite and cable television in postcolonial India. To evaluate the growing influence of foreign and domestic satellite and cable channels since 1991, the book considers a wide range of materials including contemporary television programming, historical archives, legal documents, policy statements, academic writings and journalistic accounts. Kumar argues that India's hybrid national identity is manifested in the discourses found in this variety of empirical sources. He deconstructs representations of Mahatma Gandhi as the Father of the Nation on the state-sponsored network Doordarshan and those found on Rupert Murdoch's STAR TV network. The book closely analyzes print advertisements to trace the changing status of the television set as a cultural commodity in postcolonial India and examines publicity brochures, promotional materials and programming schedules of Indian-language networks to outline the role of vernacular media in the discourse of electronic capitalism. The empirical evidence is illuminated by theoretical analyses that combine diverse approaches such as cultural studies, poststructuralism and postcolonial criticism.

Book excerpt: The Present Work Contends That Guided By The Politico-Economic Transnational Practices, Globalization Has Emerged As A Totalizing Process In Terms Of Both Hegemonic Structures And Homogenizing Cultural Traits. It Is An Ideological Derivative, Rather, A Neo-Liberal Reincarnation Of The Earlier Conceptualizations Of Progress, Growth-Obsessed Industrialization, Modernization, Glorification Of The Invisible Hand Of The Market, Objectification Of Nature And An Instrumental Treatment Of Humanity. The Work Further Contends That Gandhi Is The First Major Political Thinker-Activist To Have Challenged The Arrogant Imperialist West-Centric Model Of Development. Gandhi S Critique, It Is Argued, Is Not A Romantic Declaration Of War On The Consequences Of Progress, But A Revolt Against Its Hegemonizing Political Essence And Its Ever-Spiralling Politico-Economic Ambitions Of Dominating The World.

Book excerpt: The 20th century was the bloodiest century in world history, with two world wars and endless conflicts. The liberalization of trade has led the way to enslavement of people. Industrial/technological development, military supremacy, cultural hegemony, and dehumanizing competition have endangered the very existence of humanity and nature. The phenomena of intolerance, terrorism, and wars are inherent in globalization. There is a strong need to create some sensitivity about the growing incidence of violence and the challenges to non-violence in different countries, as well as developing an understanding of how to move to a peaceful world order as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was an apostle of peace - a man who lived and died for peace and non-violence. An effort to harmonize ecology, society, polity, economy, religion, and technology with what Gandhi calls a law of life is essential. This book shares a global understanding which will enable the reader to relive the legacy of non-violence and peace. The essays contained in this volume are inspired by a commitment to establish a culture of peace and strengthen the forces of non-violence throughout the globe. Each contributor provides an in-depth analysis of the theoretical understandings of the Gandhian paradigm and the empirical reality of different societies. This interdisciplinary treatise will prove useful not only to Gandhian scholars, but also will draw attention of researchers, educationists, peace lovers, and those engaged in non-violent action and conflict resolution all over the world.

This volume defines and makes sense of the workings of the global economy—and how it influences businesses and individuals. Each chapter identifies common questions and issues that have gained exposure in the popular media—such as outsourcing, the high cost of international travel, and the impact of a fast-growing China—to illustrate underlying drivers and mechanisms at work. Covering international trade, national wealth disparities (the haves vs. the have-nots), foreign investment, and geographical and cultural issues, and supported with illustrations, maps, charts, a glossary and timeline of key events,Globalization illuminates the dynamics of the global economy and informs readers of its profound impact on our daily lives.
