Book excerpt: A dying boy on a dying planet plays a dangerous, sophisticated, and addictive game that could save his life—if it doesn’t kill him first. A complex, gorgeous, literary thriller for fans for Ernest Cline, Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card, and M.T. Anderson. In a futuristic version of Earth, society is mostly controlled by a company that produces an addictive virtual reality game called Chimera. Everyone plays Chimera. Defeating the levels is how you earn enough points for clothes, food, even medical enhancements. Miguel Anderson is good at it. In fact, he’s better than anyone he knows. He spends all of his free time playing, hoping to reach Level 25. At Level 25 you can pick any prize you want—and Miguel needs a new biometric heart. When the game runners announce a global competition to launch a new version with untold prizes, Miguel enters and becomes a team leader. That’s new for him—playing on a team. And complicated, as the game becomes a delicate power play between wholly unexpected players. This is the first of two books and features gorgeous writing, compelling action, and a flawed and memorable hero.

Book excerpt: "Only time will tell what destiny you will make for yourself." These are the words players hear before they first set foot into OverWorld, the most popular MMORPG of all time. With over 15 million worldwide monthly subscribers, it's hard not to know someone who plays, and it's easy to feel excluded if you don't. That feeling, along with a free 10 day trial of the game, prompted a new player to jump into the online world. Using an avatar named Tobin, he learns firsthand what it's like to be a part of the virtual community that makes up OverWorld. However, he soon realizes that there is much more to OverWorld than the casual game play he expected, and that the very structure of the game may soon depend on the destiny that he makes for himself.

As I had grown tired of fear, and tired of pretending, ..and perhaps because I am somewhat of a bully, ...I began to present interesting facts, ...as interesting facts. And that, fellow players, ...apparently is Friction. Spiritfarming, as 'self-help', represents a basic opposite to traditional self help, in that you do NOT struggle, strive, self discipline, improve, sacrifice, fix the world, care about the world, socialize, or change. You simply accept, and DO, ...'YOU'.

Mist-wreathed mountains teeming with orcs, Goblins, demons and dwarven underworlds ... Burning battlefields, reigned over By imperious and ancient dragons ... Steaming jungles, filled with headhunters And savage apes, guardians to ancient temples Filled with accursed gold ... These are the realms of old school fantasy role-playing, the world of your imagination. This world is a dark and wondrous place, an endless milieu teeming with danger, intrigue, exotic wonders, epic quests, and the bold heroes and villains who dare to conquer all. And you, as the Game Master, are tasked with creating those kingdoms from scratch. But how do you create a world? How do you even begin? The CASTLE OLDSKULL GAME WORLD GENERATOR is the only guide specifically and solely designed to assist you in creating an entire old school fantasy world. Even better, this book is filled with dozens of helpful graphics which illustrate the entire mapping process. If you love lost worlds like Dave Arneson's Blackmoor, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom and Pellucidar, Gary Gygax's Flanaess, Robert E. Howard's Cimmeria and Hyboria, Fritz Leiber's Nehwon, H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands, Michael Moorcock's Melnibone and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, then this is the book for you! Book excerpt: After repeated boundary attacks by Dr. Dirt and Lady Craven, the United Biomes of the Overworld alliance hangs by a thread and must be rebuilt. Captain Rob, Corporal Frida, and the members of Battalion Zero have made it their lives’ work to do it—but they’ll have to bring the fight home. With the riches gained from their last encounter with the griefer army, they set out to build and defend a UBO capital. As every player knows, though, life in Survival mode isn’t all sunflowers and roses. Bat Zero has bought some time for the Overworld by throwing Lady Craven into Creative Mode. Free from the need to battle for every biome border, the indie cavalry turns its efforts toward guarding one stronghold. They must form a standing army, create federal buildings, and gain the support of other villages. Meanwhile, hostile mobs threaten, and the Griefer Imperial Army promises a comeback—with a vengeance. For security, Captain Rob asks his troops to make the ultimate sacrifice: changing their spawn points to the capital city. Will they? Survivalists Frida and Turner have always kept their spawn points secret. Strategist Jools doesn’t want to die—ever again. Adventurer Stormie has changed her spawn point so many times that she can’t remember how she began playing the game. Even the intrepid captain doesn’t want to risk rebirth far from the ocean that brought him into this world . . . or how will he ever get back home? If the troopers won’t agree to transplant, they’ll never be able to respawn at their battle stations with any certainty. Letting go of their origins might be the only way they can continue their quest in this hard-hitting third episode of the Defenders of the Overworld series. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dungeons, Dragons, and Digital Denizens is a collection of scholarly essays that seeks to represent the far-reaching scope and implications of digital role-playing games as both cultural and academic artifacts. As a genre, digital role playing games have undergone constant and radical revision, pushing not only multiple boundaries of game development, but also the playing strategies and experiences of players. Divided into three distinct sections, this premiere volume captures the distinctiveness of different game types, the forms of play they engender and their social and cultural implications. Contributors examine a range of games, from classics like Final Fantasy to blockbusters like World of Warcraft to obscure genre bending titles like Lux Pain. Working from a broad range of disciplines such as ecocritism, rhetoric, performance, gender, and communication, these essays yield insights that enrich the field of game studies and further illuminate the cultural, psychological and philosophical implications of a society that increasingly produces, plays and discourses about role playing games.

Book excerpt: In 2056, the world's most powerful AI System, ARKUS, comes online. Created to extend human lifespans, it quickly makes world-changing discoveries in health science. It also develops an advanced VR headset that uses consumable nanomachines to let users experience time faster in virtual worlds. Two years later, ARKUS releases World-Tree Online, a game where players scale a giant tree with thousands of unique game worlds hanging from the branches. The game's time-dilation makes it so that one hour of playtime feels like one month to those in-game, allowing humans to virtually extend their lifespans. However, after an old gamer named Vincent joins World-Tree Online, an update begins that stretches the time-dilation to one year for every five seconds. Players are unable to exit the game during the update-with an estimated wait time of three hundred sixty years. After experimenting with an exploit, Vincent begins to develop new spells that will take him higher in the game than he ever thought possible. Unfortunately, he crosses paths with the last moderator, a young man named Lucas that uses his mod abilities to torture and subjugate other players.Lucas is willing to abuse his power to conquer the World-Tree, but Vincent's exploit might just be the key to stopping him.

Book excerpt: An examination of subversive games like The Sims—games designed for political, aesthetic, and social critique. For many players, games are entertainment, diversion, relaxation, fantasy. But what if certain games were something more than this, providing not only outlets for entertainment but a means for creative expression, instruments for conceptual thinking, or tools for social change? In Critical Play, artist and game designer Mary Flanagan examines alternative games—games that challenge the accepted norms embedded within the gaming industry—and argues that games designed by artists and activists are reshaping everyday game culture. Flanagan provides a lively historical context for critical play through twentieth-century art movements, connecting subversive game design to subversive art: her examples of “playing house” include Dadaist puppet shows and The Sims. She looks at artists’ alternative computer-based games and explores games for change, considering the way activist concerns—including worldwide poverty and AIDS—can be incorporated into game design. Arguing that this kind of conscious practice—which now constitutes the avant-garde of the computer game medium—can inspire new working methods for designers, Flanagan offers a model for designing that will encourage the subversion of popular gaming tropes through new styles of game making, and proposes a theory of alternate game design that focuses on the reworking of contemporary popular game practices.
