Book excerpt: With the Lhosir king dead and his army slaughtered and drowned on the walls of Varyxhun castle, King Valaric knows it's only a matter of time before the forkbeards stop licking their wounds and come at him again - and when they do he'd better be ready because there's nothing more precious to a forkbeard than his pride. And one of the things he needs more than anything else is a working forge to hammer out more arrowhead and spearheads and draw more wire for mail; and for a forge he needs tools and an anvil. The nearest working forge that has everything he needs is in Issetbridge. Issetbridge still occupied by the Lhosir so he'd best send someone tough to go and get it, and it has to be someone who knows his way around a forge, but that's not a problem since it was going to be Gallow anyway, his forkbeard smith. What he also has is a man on the inside, a carter whom the forkbeards of Issetbridge will recognise and might even let pass without trying to murder him. It's all good until Gallow's wife Arda points out that half the Lhosir in Issetbridge will recognise Gallow and he's about as subtle and unobtrusive as a smack round the head from a hammer. What Valaric really needs is someone who knows their way around a forge but whom the forkbeards won't notice. A Marroc, not a forkbeard. Better still, a woman. Her. Valaric reluctantly agrees. What he doesn't know is that Arda and Fenaric the Carter have history and it's not pretty.

Download or read book The Silver Kings written by Stephen Deas and published by Gollancz. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised by the likes of Joe Abercrombie and Brent Weeks, Stephen Deas has made dragons his own. The Silver King, half-god, legend and myth, is returning. Once he fought his brother, the Black Moon, and his dragons, and was defeated. But the Black Moon was also weakened, and a millennia has passed. Humanity has grown used to a world without gods, a world where they were masters of all - including the terrifying dragons. But the dragons have awakened, the hole in reality is expanding, and the shackles that kept the half-gods controlled have been broken. The Black Moon lives on in the body of Berren Crowntaker, and has taken control. With an army behind him, the dragons above and the Dragon Queen at his side, he goes to war with his brother. The worlds are turning, and only one thing is sure - there will be an ending. THE SILVER KING is the triumphant conclusion to one of the most brutal and wide-ranging fantasy series of recent years.

Book Synopsis Victorians Against the Gallows by : James Gregory
Download or read book Victorians Against the Gallows written by James Gregory and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time that Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, the list of crimes liable to attract the death penalty had effectively been reduced to murder. Yet, despite this, the gallows remained a source of controversy in Victorian Britain and there was a growing unease in liberal quarters surrounding the question of capital punishment. Unease was expressed in various forms, including efforts at outright abolition. Focusing in part on the activities of the Society for the Abolition of Capital Punishment, James Gregory here examines abolitionist strategies, leaders and personnel. He locates the 'gallows question' in an imperial context and explores the ways in which debates about the gallows and abolition featured in literature, from poetry to 'novels of purpose' and popular romances of the underworld. He places the abolitionist movement within the wider Victorian worlds of philanthropy, religious orthodoxy and social morality in a study which will be essential reading for students and researchers of Victorian history.

Book excerpt: The year is 1820. Rider Sandman, a hero of Waterloo, returns to London to wed his fiancée. But instead of settling down to fame and glory, he finds himself penniless in a country where high unemployment and social unrest rage, and where men—innocent or guilty—are hanged for the merest of crimes. When he's offered a job as private investigator to re-open the case of a painter due to be hanged for a murder he didn't commit, Sandman readily accepts—as much for the money as for a chance to see justice done in a country gone to ruins. Soon, however, he's mired in a grisly murder plot that keeps thickening. Sandman makes his way through gentlemen's clubs and shady taverns, aristocratic mansions, and fashionable painters' studios determined to rescue the innocent young man from the rope. But someone doesn't want the truth revealed.

Download or read book The Gallows Land written by Bill Pronzini and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four months after the death of his young wife, Roy Boone drifts west, alone, into the parched and barren desert of the Arizona Territory. Having sold his farm and virtually all his possessions, Roy is a man desperately escaping his own grief. With no real destination, he wanders aimlessly, desiring only solitude and contemplation. Roy is forced to put aside his sorrow when he stops to beg some water from a lone woman at a beaten-up old ranch house. But Jennifer Todd’s home is not the only thing that is bruised and scarred: Roy’s sympathy is quickly aroused by the black-and-blue marks on her beautiful face, and the seething hatred in her voice when she utters her absent husband’s name. Not long after he leaves Jennifer’s home, Roy finds that his spare pistol is missing, and when he goes back to retrieve it, he finds Jennifer gone and a man’s body lying face down in the dust. So begins a kaleidoscopic odyssey across Arizona, as Roy chases down the fleeing Jennifer. But a couple of murderous hoodlums at his own heels put Roy’s life in constant jeopardy. When he finally catches up with Jennifer, and resolves to be her protector, their clashing natures get them into more than one life-and-death scrape. This mysterious woman, who is most certainly a liar, and quite possibly a murderess, rekindles long-buried emotions in Roy, and he vows to stick by her side, whether she wants him there or not. Bill Pronzini’s story—a disarmingly sophisticated and often moving tale—is full of carefully evoked Western detail, and plenty of high-spirited action. The tumultuous finale aboard a California-bound steamer proves Pronzini to be a welcome addition to the Western-writers’ fold.

Book excerpt: Salem, Massachusetts - 1692 Thomas is marked as an outcast the moment he steps off the ship from England. As a Quaker, he’s outnumbered and distrusted by Salem’s Puritans. And as an orphan without any useful skills, he has nowhere to live and no way to earn his keep. In a stroke of luck—perhaps good, perhaps not—he’s taken in by the aged widow Prudence Blevins, who’s rumored to be a witch. Patience has tried all her life to be a good Puritan—obedient to God and to her elders—and all her life, she has come up short. But her orderly world is upended when her younger sister, Abigail, falls victim to a mysterious affliction. The same torments have stricken other Salem girls, who claim they’re being bewitched by servants of the Devil. Soon the girls, including Abigail, begin accusing neighbors of witchcraft. As the community becomes consumed by suspicion and fear, Thomas and Patience search for the truth. To protect those they care about, they will have to question everything they think they know: their faiths, their loyalties, and their places in Salem.
