Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vast salt marshes, ancient grasslands, lush forests, pristine beaches and dunes, and copious inland waters, all surrounded by a teeming sea. These are probably not the first things you imagine when you think of Long Island, but just beyond its highways and housing developments lies a stunning landscape full of diverse plant and animal life. Combining science writing, environmental history, and first-hand accounts from a longtime resident, At the Glacier’s Edge offers a unique narrative natural history of Long Island. Betsy McCully tells the story of how the island was formed at the end of the last ice age, how its habitats evolved, and how humans in the last few hundred years have radically altered and degraded its landscape. Yet as she personally recounts the habitat losses and species declines she has witnessed over the past few decades, she describes the vital efforts that environmental activists are making to restore and reclaim this land—from replanting salt marshes, to preserving remaining grasslands and forests, to cleaning up the waters. At the Glacier’s Edge provides an in-depth look at the flora, fauna and geology that make Long Island so special.

Book excerpt: In the cold corrupt system of the colony mining worlds, one man's life and liberty aren't worth much; the vital spacelanes are rigidly controlled, and it's as much as your life is worth to go against the system. But there is one man with both the unbroken spirit and the technological mastery to open the lanes and free his fellow men from tyranny. And on grim Stellamira, N.N. Gallagher builds the first resistance. His materials: downtrodden colonists with nothing left to lose, and worlds to gain; a clever, rebellious young madame and her "entourage;" a native starship captain with a lot to learn, and a battlefield to learn it on; and a great ice-asteroid that engineering genius has transformed into a ship called GALLAGHER'S GLACIER.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, scientist Rosaly Lopes and artist Michael Carroll teamed up as fellows of the National Science Foundation to travel to Mount Erebus, the world’s southernmost active volcano in Antarctica. The logistics of getting there and complex operations of Antarctica's McMurdo Station echo the kinds of strategies that future explorers will undertake as they set up settlements on Mars and beyond. This exciting popular-level book explores the arduous environment of Antarctica and how it is similar to other icy worlds in the Solar System. The bulk of this story delves into Antarctica’s infrastructure, exploration, and remote camps, culminating on the summit of Erebus. There, the authors explored the caves and ice towers on the volcano’s flanks, taking photographs and generating original art depicting scenes in Antarctica and terrestrial analogs on other planets and moons. Readers will see an intimate side of Mount Erebus and Antarctica while surveying the region’s history, exploration, geology, and volcanology, which includes research funded by the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Programs. Richly illustrated with photographs and stunning paintings showcasing the beauty of the harsh continent, the book captures the spirit and splendor of the authors’ journey to Erebus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a traditional or professional book. I have not had any formal training in English or writing, other than a lifetime of reading, correspondence, and writing newsletters. It is written mostly for the benefit of my family and friends. I was born in Grafton, North Dakota, to Farigal Gallagher and Marguerite Gagnon on April 1, 1936. My fathers nickname was FagIm glad they never stuck that on me. Mother is of French Canadian parents, so Marguerite was a little too much for English speakers, so it was shortened to Margaret and then Mugs. My two brothers, Michael and Robert, are both two years younger. We were known as Pat, Mike, and Mustard. This was a hard time in the Dakotas as it was the depth of the Depression, and there was no market for the wheat, barley, and potatoes that the farmers grew. The area was a complete farm economy. If the farmers were not making it, neither was anyone else. We lived on a farm that had been homesteaded by my grandfather Farigal Gallagher. My father did not have any ownership in the land, having given it up for money to go to the University of Chicago with the idea of becoming a physician. I understand that he did not make the grade at school, and he and my mother came back to North Dakota to help my grandfather Gagnon during his dying days. After he died, they went out to the farm and lived in the old Gallagher homestead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaciers and Glaciation is the classic textbook for all students of glaciation. Stimulating and accessible, it has established a reputation as a comprehensive and essential resource. In this new edition, the text, references and illustrations have been thoroughly updated to give today's reader an up-to-the minute overview of the nature, origin and behaviour of glaciers and the geological and geomorphological evidence for their past history on earth. The first part of the book investigates the processes involved in forming glacier ice, the nature of glacier-climate relationships, the mechanisms of glacier flow and the interactions of glaciers with other natural systems such as rivers, lakes and oceans. In the second part, the emphasis moves to landforms and sediment, the interpretation of the earth's glacial legacy and the reconstruction of glacial depositional environments and palaeoglaciology.

Book excerpt: Ices in the Solar-System: A Volatile-Driven Journey from the Inner Solar System to its Far Reaches details the evolution of ice on planetary bodies within the Solar System, including terrestrial planets and the Moon, Ceres and other dwarf planets or volatile asteroids, icy Galilean and Saturnian satellites, Triton and disparate Uranian moons, and Pluto, other Kuyper belt objects and comets. The book provides a view of different ice types throughout the Solar System, i.e., H2O, CO2, CH4, etc., that characterize icy processes on disparate bodies. Ice and icy processes at micro through macro scales are discussed. The book geographically spans the major planetary bodies of the Solar System, covering surface and subsurface geologies, geophysics and geochemistry of ices to answer questions such as the nature and extent of water ice and different frozen volatile species, how do ices give us clues to interiors and oceans, and more. - • Draws a pan solar-system view of various ice species • Identifies and addresses outstanding and sometimes puzzling questions about these ices • Describes the dynamic relationships between these ices and the geological history of the planets, moons, and smaller bodies where they occur • Studies these relationships using multiple analytical-scales and techniques
