The New Utopia is a short story in which the author describes his dream about a socialist society. Jerome's short essay describes a regimented future city, indeed world, of nightmarish egalitarianism, where men and women are barely distinguishable in their grey uniforms and all have short black hair, natural or dyed. Other works include the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow (1886) and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow; Three Men on the Bummel, a sequel to Three Men in a Boat; and several other novels.

Book excerpt: Drawing both on the tenets of classical rhetoric and on contemporary critical theory, Heather Dubrow here offers a bold and persuasive reading of Shakespeare's nondramatic poems. She calls into question prevailing critical views of Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, and the sonnets and asserts that in these poems Shakespeare uses rhetoric with great subtlety and force to effect characterizations as rich in psychological and moral complexities as those found in the plays.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Christopher Marlowe provides a full introduction to one of the great pioneers of both the Elizabethan stage and modern English poetry. It recalls that Marlowe was an inventor of the English history play (Edward II) and of Ovidian narrative verse (Hero and Leander), as well as being author of such masterpieces of tragedy and lyric as Doctor Faustus and 'The Passionate Shepherd to His Love'. Sixteen leading scholars provide accessible and authoritative chapters on Marlowe's life, texts, style, politics, religion, and classicism. The volume also considers his literary and patronage relationships and his representations of sexuality and gender and of geography and identity; his presence in modern film and theatre; and finally his influence on subsequent writers. The Companion includes a chronology of Marlowe's life, a note on reference works, and a reading list for each chapter.

Book excerpt: Although many authors have produced successful sonnets, Sandra Bermann demonstrates that Petrarch, Shakespeare, and Baudelaire are clearly among those who best exploit the genre's potential for rhetorical and thematic diversity. Through a series of close readings informed by a striking combination of linguistics, contemporary theory, and history, she highlights a variety of rhetorical strategies: metonymy in the Petrarchan sonnet, mobile metaphors in the Shakeperean, and allegory and irony in the Baudelairean. She simultaneously underscores transformations in meaning and voice in each poet's rendition of traditional themes. Bermann concludes, however, that throughout these rhetorical and thematic changes, the sonnet maintains its focus on the poetic self. Whether this "I" marks a drive toward a strong, integral presence or emphasizes instead internal division and alienation, the very fact that the self remains so central lends some insight into the sonnet's longevity in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for those who design, redesign, and assess writing programs, Very Like a Whale is an intensive discussion of writing program assessment issues. Taking its title from Hamlet, the book explores the multifaceted forces that shape writing programs and the central role these programs can and should play in defining college education. Given the new era of assessment in higher education, writing programs must provide valid evidence that they are serving students, instructors, administrators, alumni, accreditors, and policymakers. This book introduces new conceptualizations associated with assessment, making them clear and available to those in the profession of rhetoric and composition/writing studies. It also offers strategies that aid in gathering information about the relative success of a writing program in achieving its identified goals. Philosophically and historically aligned with quantitative approaches, White, Elliot, and Peckham use case study and best-practice scholarship to demonstrate the applicability of their innovative approach, termed Design for Assessment (DFA). Well grounded in assessment theory, Very Like a Whale will be of practical use to new and seasoned writing program administrators alike, as well as to any educator involved with the accreditation process.
