Book excerpt: Ultralight bosonic particles forming a coherent state are dark matter candidates with distinctive wave-like behaviour on the scale of dwarf galaxies and below. In this thesis, a new simulation technique for ultralight bosonic dark matter, also called fuzzy dark matter, is developed and applied in zoom-in simulations of dwarf galaxy halos. When gas and star formation are not included in the simulations, it is found that halos contain solitonic cores in their centers reproducing previous results in the literature. The cores exhibit strong quasi-normal oscillations, which are possibly testable...

Book excerpt: This book consists of 3 titles, which are the following: Dark Matter - In the vast expanse of the cosmos, there exists an enigmatic substance that eludes detection yet exerts a profound influence on the universe's structure and evolution. This substance, known as dark matter, remains one of the greatest mysteries of modern astrophysics, captivating the imaginations of scientists and enthusiasts alike. Galaxies - Galaxies are dynamic entities, constantly evolving through processes like mergers, collisions, and interactions with neighboring galaxies. When galaxies merge, their stars, gas, and dust can undergo dramatic transformations, leading to the formation of new stars and restructuring of the galaxy's shape. These interactions can trigger intense bursts of star formation and feed supermassive black holes at the galaxies' centers, leading to the emission of powerful jets of radiation. Quantum Gravity - General relativity, developed by Albert Einstein, describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. It works extremely well at large scales, such as in predicting planetary orbits and the behavior of black holes. On the other hand, quantum mechanics deals with the fundamental behavior of particles at the smallest scales, such as atoms and subatomic particles. It incorporates principles like wave-particle duality, quantization, and uncertainty.

Book excerpt: A host of astrophysical measurements suggest that most of the matter in the Universe is an invisible, nonluminous substance that physicists call “dark matter.” Understanding the nature of dark matter is one of the greatest challenges of modern physics and is of paramount importance to our theories of cosmology and particle physics. This text explores one of the leading hypotheses to explain dark matter: that it consists of ultralight bosons forming an oscillating field that feebly interacts with light and matter. Many new experiments have emerged over the last decade to test this hypothesis, involving state-of-the-art microwave cavities, precision nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, dark matter “radios,” and synchronized global networks of atomic clocks, magnetometers, and interferometers. The editors have gathered leading experts from around the world to present the theories motivating these searches, evidence about dark matter from astrophysics, and the diverse experimental techniques employed in searches for ultralight bosonic dark matter. The text provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to this blossoming field of research for advanced undergraduates, beginning graduate students, or anyone new to the field, with tutorials and solved problems in every chapter. The multifaceted nature of the research – combining ideas and methods from atomic, molecular, and optical physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology – makes this introductory approach attractive for beginning researchers as well as members of the broader scientific community. Book excerpt: Despite the great successes of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model in explaining a wide range of observations of the global evolution and the formation of galaxies and large-scale structure in the universe, the origin and microscopic nature of this dark matter is still unknown. The most common form of CDM considered to-date is that of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), but some of the cosmological predictions for this kind of CDM are in apparent conflict with observations (e.g. cuspy-cored halos and an overabundance of satellite dwarf galaxies). For these reasons, it is important to consider the consequences of different forms of CDM. We focus here on the hypothesis that the dark matter is comprised, instead, of ultralight bosons that form a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC), described by a complex scalar field. We start from the Klein-Gordon and Einstein field equations to describe the evolution of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe in the presence of this kind of dark matter. We find that, in addition to the phases of radiation-domination (RD), matter-domination (MD) and Lambda-domination (LD) familiar from the standard CDM model, there is an earlier phase of scalar-field-domination (SFD) which is special to this model. In addition, while WIMP CDM is non-relativistic at all times after it decouples, the equation of state of BEC-SFDM is found to be relativistic at early times, evolving from incompressible (p = [rho]) to radiation-like (p = [rho]/3), before it becomes non-relativistic and CDM-like at late times. The timing of the transitions between these phases and regimes is shown to yield fundamental constraints on the particle mass and self-interaction coupling strength. We also discuss progress on the description of structure formation in this model, which includes additional constraints on these parameters.

Book excerpt: While mounting observational evidence suggests the coevolution of galaxies and their embedded massive black holes (MBHs), a comprehensive astrophysical understanding which incorporates both galaxies and MBHs has been missing. To tackle the nonlinear processes of galaxy formation, we develop a state-of-the-art numerical framework which self-consistently models the interplay between galactic components: dark matter, gas, stars, and MBHs. Utilizing this physically motivated tool, we present an investigation of a massive star-forming galaxy hosting a slowly growing MBH in a cosmological LCDM simulation. The MBH feedback heats the surrounding gas and locally suppresses star formation in the galactic inner core. In simulations of merging galaxies, the high-resolution adaptive mesh allows us to observe widespread starbursts via shock-induced star formation, and the interplay between the galaxies and their embedding medium. Fast growing MBHs in merging galaxies drive more frequent and powerful jets creating sizable bubbles at the galactic centers. We conclude that the interaction between the interstellar gas, stars and MBHs is critical in understanding the star formation history, black hole accretion history, and cosmological evolution of galaxies. Expanding upon our extensive experience in galactic simulations, we are well poised to apply this tool to other challenging, yet highly rewarding tasks in contemporary astrophysics, such as high-redshift quasar formation.

Book excerpt: To the eyes of the average person and the trained scientist, the night sky is dark, even though the universe is populated by myriads of bright galaxies. Why this happens is a question commonly called Olbers'' Paradox, and dates from at least 1823. How dark is the night sky is a question which preoccupies astrophysicists at the present. The answer to both questions tells us about the origin of the universe and the nature of its contents OCo luminous galaxies like the Milky Way, plus the dark matter between them and the mysterious dark energy which appears to be pushing everything apart. In this book, the fascinating history of Olbers'' Paradox is reviewed, and the intricate physics of the light/dark universe is examined in detail. The fact that the night sky is dark (a basic astronomical observation that anybody can make) turns out to be connected with the finite age of the universe, thereby confirming some event like the Big Bang. But the space between the galaxies is not perfectly black, and data on its murkiness at various wavelengths can be used to constrain and identify its unseen constituents.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the intersection of dark matter and galaxy formation physics by modeling the faintest galaxies in the Universe in a cosmological context. In the first part of this work, I present an empirical model for the connection between faint galaxies and small dark matter halos. Combining this model with tailored cosmological simulations of Milky Way analogs and state-of-the-art satellite galaxy observations yields new insights into dwarf galaxy formation and hierarchical structure formation. Next, I show that these same dwarf galaxy observations place stringent constraints on microphysical dark matter properties including its warmth, self-interactions, Standard Model interactions, minimum particle mass, and formation epoch. Finally, I describe a unified framework that combines dark matter constraints from dwarf galaxies and strong gravitational lensing, paving the way for next-generation surveys of small-scale cosmic structure to deliver unprecedented insights into dark matter physics.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this dissertation is to examine the relationship between galaxies and their dark matter halos. Understanding this relationship is instrumental to using modern galaxy surveys as probes of cosmology and to teasing out the details of galaxy formation. I will focus on methods relating to dark matter only simulations and large area surveys, and the use of galaxy clusters. I begin with an exploration of subhalo abundance matching, a commonly used empirical method for relating galaxies to dark matter halos in dark matter only simulations. The most obvious approach is to simply place the most massive, or most luminous, galaxy into the most massive dark matter halo. Nonetheless, there are several possible variations that I explore within the general class of subhalo abundance matching models. Results from these models are then validated against measurements drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These models are used to test a method for obtaining cosmology while marginalizing over the details of the galaxy-halo relationship. This method combines two-point clustering measurements with a measurement of cluster mass and richness to provide constraints on the density of dark matter in the universe. The additional cluster statistics are essential to breaking degeneracies between the galaxy-halo relationship and the cosmology that occur when fitting to the two-point clustering alone. While this method had previously been used in the literature, this dissertation adds by performing a fully consistent analysis of multiple galaxy models, demonstrating that so long as the galaxy-halo connection can be adequately modeled by a halo occupation distribution that the cosmology can be estimated in an unbiased manner. Returning to observations, I examine the clusters obtained using the redMaPPer cluster finder applied to SDSS. The trends found are generally consistent with previous cluster catalogs, but take advantage of the reduced scatter in the mass-richness relationship. The results have significant implications for the formation of clusters, particularly the importance of recent mergers on the galaxy statistics and for redshift evolution. This analysis is also applied to early data from DES, showing the evolution of red cluster galaxies up to z=0.9. Finally, I discuss the potential for future work. This includes application of redMaPPer and the M/N formalism to DES and future surveys, as well as directions for using galaxy cluster catalogs as a tool for understanding the formation of the most massive galaxies and their dark matter halos.

Book excerpt: The abundance of low mass halos is one of the key predictions of LCDM, which remains at apparent odds with observations of luminous structure. We present new measurements of the spatial distribution and the cumulative luminosity function of satellite galaxies up to a thousand times fainter than their hosts, as a function of host stellar mass and morphology between redshifts 0.1 and 0.8, using imaging from the GOODS and COSMOS fields in conjunction with a rigorous statistical analysis. We demonstrate how these measurements provide powerful new constraints for abundance matching and cosmological simulations in the context of both warm and cold dark matter, and how future measurements of faint satellite colors using CANDELS, will provide important distinguishing power between warm and cold dark matter models. In addition, we present results from a complementary gravitational lens modeling project in which we use strongly lensed AGN narrow-line emission in order to detect dark matter subhalos, demonstrating a promising new method for measuring the subhalo mass function in thousands of lensed systems which will be discovered in ongoing and future optical surveys.

Book excerpt: In this work we use the N-body resimulation technique to address aspects of structure formation. In the first chapter we study the influence of the local environment of DM haloes on their properties. In the second chapter we address the so-called "substructure problem" which is one of the major challenges of the CDM model of cosmology. We perform ultra-high resolution simulations of the assembly of a Milky Way type dark matter halo within its full cosmological context and propose a new analytical fitting formula (SWTS) which provides a better fit to the simulated Milky Way halo than the NFW or Moore profiles do. In the third chapter we use our ultra-high resolution simulations to study the possible -ray signal from dark matter annihilation. If such a signal was detected, the nature of the dark matter, the answer to one of the most important questions of modern cosmology, would be known. (urn: nbn: de: bvb:19-16446)"
