Book excerpt: In this thesis I explore the effects of the various physical processes behind galaxy formation and evolution in hierarchical cosmologies by using semi-analytical modelling. I use the Durham semi-analytical model GALFORM. I first test the GALFORM model predictions using observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). I use two different variants of the model, Baugh et al (2005), which assumes a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) in starbursts and superwind feedback, and Bower et al (2006), which incorporates AGN feedback with a standard IMF. I compare the luminosity function, colours, sizes and morphology distributions of present-day galaxies in the models and with the SDSS. The Bower et al model better reproduces the shape of the luminosity function, the morphology-luminosity relation and the colour bimodality observed in the SDSS data. The Baugh et al model is much more successful at predicting galaxy sizes for late-type galaxies. Both models have problems with the sizes of early-type galaxies, which are predicted to be too large for low luminosities and too small for high luminosities compared to SDSS. I tested the impact on the model predictions of varying the prescriptions for supernova feedback, disk instabilities and galaxy mergers. In the second part of the thesis I explore the connection between two high redshift star-forming galaxy populations and present-day galaxies and their contribution to the star formation history. I built galaxy merger trees and followed the evolution and properties of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) using the Baugh et al (2005) model. The model predicts that the descendants of SMGs (S_{nu}> 5 mJy) have a median stellar mass of ~10e11/h solar masses, and that more than 70% of these descendants are bulge-dominated. More than 50% of present-day galaxies with stellar masses larger than 7 x 10e11/h solar masses are predicted to be descendants of such SMGs. Somewhat controversially, the stellar mass produced in the submillimetre phase contributes only 0.2% of the total present-day stellar mass, and 2% of the stellar mass of SMG descendants. The descendants of z=3 LBGs are predicted to have a median stellar mass equal to that of the Milky Way (M = 4 x 10e10/h solar masses), while the descendants of z=6 LBGs are predicted to have a larger median stellar mass (M = 10e11/h solar masses). The model predicts that only one in every 16 and one in every 50 Milky Way mass galaxies have a Lyman-break galaxy progenitor at z=3 and z=6 respectively.

Book excerpt: Despite the mysterious nature of dark matter and dark energy, the Lambda-Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model provides a reasonably accurate description of the evolution of the cosmos and the distribution of galaxies. Today, we are set to tackle more specific and quantitative questions about the galaxy formation physics, the nature of dark matter, and the connection between the dark and the visible components. The answers to these questions are however elusive, because dark matter is not directly observable, and various unknowns lie between what we can observe and what we can calculate. Hence, mathematical models that bridge the observable and the calculable are essential for the study of modern cosmology. The aim of my thesis work is to improve existing models and also to construct new models for various aspects of the dark matter distribution, as dark matter structures the cosmic web and forms the nests of visible galaxies. Utilizing a series of cosmological dark matter simulations which span a wide dynamical range and a statistical sample of zoom-in simulations which focus on individual dark matter halos, we develop models for the spatial and velocity distribution of dark matter particles, the abundance of dark substructures, and the empirical connection between dark matter and galaxies. As more precise observational results become available, more accurate models are then required to test the consistency between these results and the LCDM predictions. For all the models we investigate, we find that the formation history of dark matter halos always plays a crucial role. Neglecting the halo formation history would result in systematic biases when we interpret various observational results, including dark matter direct detection experiments, the detection of dark substructures with strong-lensed systems, the large-scale spatial clustering of galaxies, and the abundance of dwarf galaxies. Rectifying this, our work will enable us to fully utilize the complementary power of diverse observational datasets to test the LCDM model and to seek new physics.

Based on further analysis, he shows that there is a good correspondence with observations from new instruments such as the SCUBA2 bolometric camera and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) interferometer, and reveals some novel aspects of this exciting galaxy population. In particular, he shows that blending of these galaxies in the imaging produces an artificial enhancement in their clustering, which he dubs “blending bias”. This implies that the host dark matter halo masses for these galaxies have previously been significantly overestimated. He also presents amongst the first predictions from a galaxy formation model for observations of these galaxies that will be made by the James Webb Space Telescope (the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope).

Book excerpt: According to the current cosmological paradigm, ``Lambda Cold Dark Matter'' (LambdaCDM), only ~20% of the gravitating matter in the universe is made up of ordinary (i.e. baryonic) matter, while the rest consists of invisible dark matter (DM) particles, which existence can be inferred from their gravitational influence on baryonic matter and light. Despite the large success of the LambdaCDM model in explaining the large scale structure of the Universe and the conditions of the early Universe, there has been debate on whether this model can fully explain the observations of low mass (dwarf) galaxies. The Local Group (LG), which hosts most of the known dwarf galaxies, is a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the LambdaCDM model on small scales. I analyze the kinematics of LG members, including the Milky~Way-Andromeda (MW-M31) pair and dwarf galaxies, in order to constrain the mass of the LG. I construct samples of LG analogs from large cosmological N-body simulations, according to the following kinematics constraints: (a) the separation and relative velocity of the MW-M31 pair; (b) the receding velocity of dwarf galaxies in the outskirts of the LG. I find that these constraints yield a median total mass of 2*10^#x12; solar masses for the MW and M31, but with a large uncertainty. Based on the mass and the kinematics constraints, I select twelve LG candidates for the APOSTLE simulations project. The APOSTLE project consists of high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the LG candidates, using the EAGLE galaxy formation model. I show that dwarf satellites of MW and M31 analogs in APOSTLE are in good agreement with observations, in terms of number, luminosity and kinematics. There have been tensions between the observed masses of LG dwarf spheroidals and the predictions of N-body simulations within the LambdaCDM framework; simulations tend to over-predict the mass of dwarfs. This problem is known as the ``too-big-to-fail'' problem. I find that the enclosed mass within the half-light radii of Galactic classical dwarf spheroidals, is in excellent agreement with the simulated satellites in APOSTLE, and that there is no too-big-to-fail problem in APOSTLE simulations. A few factors contribute in solving the problem: (a) the mass of haloes in hydrodynamical simulations are lower compared to their N-body counterparts; (b) stellar mass-halo mass relation in APOSTLE is different than the ones used to argue for the too-big-to-fail problem; (c) number of massive satellites correlates with the virial mass of the host, i.e. MW analogs with virial masses above ~ 3*10^#x12; solar masses would have faced too-big-to-fail problems; (d) uncertainties in observations were underestimated in previous works. Stellar mass-halo mass relation in APOSTLE predicts that all isolated dwarf galaxies should live in haloes with maximum circular velocity (V_max) above 20 km/s. Satellite galaxies, however, can inhabit lower mass haloes due to tidal stripping which removes mass from the inner regions of satellites as they orbit their hosts. I examine all satellites of the MW and M31, and find that many of them live in haloes less massive than V_max=20 km/s. I additionally show that the low mass population is following a different trend in stellar mass-size relation compared to the rest of the satellites or field dwarfs. I use stellar mass-halo mass relation of APOSTLE field galaxies, along with tidal stripping trajectories derived in Penarrubia et al., in order to predict the properties of the progenitors of the LG satellites. According to this prediction, some satellites have lost a significant amount of dark matter as well as stellar mass. Cra~II, And~XIX, XXI, and XXV have lost 99 per-cent of their stellar mass in the past. I show that the mass discrepancy-acceleration relation of dwarf galaxies in the LG is at odds with MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) predictions, whereas tidal stripping can explain the observations very well. I compare observed velocity dispersion of LG satellites with the predicted values by MOND. The observations and MOND predictions are inconsistent, in particular in the regime of ultra faint dwarf galaxies.

The topics we investigate are: (i) improvements to the relation between the star formation rates (SFRs) and the cold gas contents of galaxies; (ii) how to predict the atomic and molecular gas masses in galaxies with different properties, (iii) how to predict the emission of widely used molecular tracers, such as carbon monoxide (CO); and (iv) the gas outflows from galaxies driven by supernovae and their dependence on local and global properties of galaxies. We perform these studies using the semi-analytic model of galaxy formation GALFORM, and fully embed our calculations in a cosmological scenario, the Lambda cold dark matter paradigm. This is done with the dual aims of understanding how the physical processes above affect galaxy formation and evolution in a statistical fashion, and to improve and extend the predictive power of galaxy formation models. We find that by calculating the SFR from the molecular gas content and relating the molecular-to-atomic mass ratio in the interstellar medium to the hydrostatic pressure in the midplane of the disk, we can explain the observed atomic gas mass function and clustering of galaxies selected by their atomic hydrogen mass, the SFRs of local and high-redshift galaxies, the evolution of the molecular hydrogen gas fraction and the global atomic hydrogen abundance of the universe, and the local scaling relations between gas contents and other galaxy properties. We also find that by coupling GALFORM with a radiative transfer and interstellar chemistry code describing photon dominated regions, our new model can explain the observed emission of CO from different types of galaxy. Finally, based on a physical description of the dynamical evolution of bubbles created by supernovae in the interstellar medium, we find that the outflow rate driven by supernovae depends strongly on the surface density of gas plus stars and the gas fraction. We critically revise the phenomenological prescriptions widely used to describe supernova feedback in the literature and propose new physically motivated prescriptions.

This thesis addresses these problems in the context of the interplay between baryons and dark matter in the concordance cosmological model. In the first part, we investigate galaxy abundance and scaling relations using a compilation of observational data along with large-scale cosmological simulations of dark matter (DM). We find that standard cosmological model, in conjunction with halo abundance matching (HAM) and simple dynamical corrections, fits all basic statistics of galaxies more than the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This zero-parameter model predicts the observed luminosity-velocity relation of early- and late-type galaxies, as well as the clustering of bright galaxies and the observed abundance of galaxies as function of circular velocity. However, we find that all DM halos more massive than the LMC are much more abundant than galaxies they host. Motivated by the model's shortcomings, in the second part we study the effect of baryons on galaxy formation using numerical simulations that include gas physics. We implement a model of star formation (SF) and stellar feedback based directly on observations of star-forming regions, where stellar feedback from massive stars includes radiation pressure, photoheating, supernovae, and stellar winds. We find that stellar radiation has a strong effect at z > 1, where it efficiently suppresses SF by dispersing cold and dense gas, preventing runaway growth of the stellar component, and yielding rising SF histories that reproduce many observations. Stellar feedback produces bulgeless discs with rotation curves and baryon fractions in excellent agreement with data. Feedback-driven blowouts reduce the central DM density of a dwarf, reliving tension between [lambda]CDM and observations. Based on these results, we begin to characterize the baryon cycle of galaxies and its imprint on studies of the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We find that feedback has a large impact on the exchange of gas and metals between the galaxy and the halo. This is evidenced in the spatial distribution of various gas phases and in the kinematics of accretion and outflows. We conclude that synergy between simulations and absorption-line studies is essential for disentangling the physics of galaxy formation in the context of [lambda]CDM.
