Book Synopsis Green Information Systems in the Residential Sector by : Philipp Wunderlich
Download or read book Green Information Systems in the Residential Sector written by Philipp Wunderlich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given rising electricity consumption, coupled with finite resources, and a growing awareness surrounding sustainable energy, ICT-enabled electrical networks such as smart grids are increasingly being deployed by energy companies. One aspect of smart grids is smart meter technology (SMT), which are sophisticated digital electrical meters, having the potential to increase energy efficiency in both residential and industrial sectors. However, a challenge to SMT-implementation in residential settings has been its successful adoption by consumers. As many cases in the US, and other parts of the world highlight, such implementation projects have run into resistance from the consumers. Despite these challenges, little research has been conducted on this topic. This study is one of the first that attempts to fill that void by empirically examining the antecedents of SMT adoption amongst potential customers and a group of SMT users. Specifically, this study developed a model surrounding consumers’ intention to adopt and use SMT, by drawing on theories of adoption and motivational psychology and also by including a set of context-specific variables.

Book Synopsis Post-2020 Climate Change Regime Formation by : Suh-Yong Chung
Download or read book Post-2020 Climate Change Regime Formation written by Suh-Yong Chung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fate of the climate change regime hangs in the balance as the UN-led negotiations try to forge a new international strategy for the post-2020 period. Since 1992, the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol has been the primary legal instrument to respond to the climate challenge. However, the intergovernmental process has been riddled with problems that have rendered it ineffective. The changing economic landscape has further made this country grouping problematic as some developing countries now emit more than some of their advanced counterparts. Such problems have crippled the existing regime in adequately addressing climate change. Building upon the expertise of the contributors of this volume, this ground-breaking collection aims to show the way forward for the intergovernmental process. It is the first of its kind to explore the key features of the regime, featuring meticulously researched pieces from leading experts in the field. Each chapter responds to the questions surrounding the political and structural limitations of the current top-down approach taken in climate negotiations and proposes various alternatives countries can take to overcome such limitations in the process of building the post-2020 climate change regime. In particular, this collection underscores the concept of low-carbon development and green growth to make the climate change regime more effective.

Book Synopsis Feynman Lectures on Computation by : Tony Hey
Download or read book Feynman Lectures on Computation written by Tony Hey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last lecture course that Nobel Prize winner Richard P. Feynman gave to students at Caltech from 1983 to 1986 was not on physics but on computer science. The first edition of the Feynman Lectures on Computation, published in 1996, provided an overview of standard and not-so-standard topics in computer science given in Feynman’s inimitable style. Although now over 20 years old, most of the material is still relevant and interesting, and Feynman’s unique philosophy of learning and discovery shines through. For this new edition, Tony Hey has updated the lectures with an invited chapter from Professor John Preskill on “Quantum Computing 40 Years Later”. This contribution captures the progress made toward building a quantum computer since Feynman’s original suggestions in 1981. The last 25 years have also seen the “Moore’s law” roadmap for the IT industry coming to an end. To reflect this transition, John Shalf, Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has contributed a chapter on “The Future of Computing beyond Moore’s Law”. The final update for this edition is an attempt to capture Feynman’s interest in artificial intelligence and artificial neural networks. Eric Mjolsness, now a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California Irvine, was a Teaching Assistant for Feynman’s original lecture course and his research interests are now the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning for multi-scale science. He has contributed a chapter called “Feynman on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” that captures the early discussions with Feynman and also looks toward future developments. This exciting and important work provides key reading for students and scholars in the fields of computer science and computational physics.
Book Synopsis The Video Game Industry by : Peter Zackariasson
Download or read book The Video Game Industry written by Peter Zackariasson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Video Game Industry provides a platform for the research on the video game industry to draw a coherent and informative picture of this industry. Previously this has been done sparsely through conference papers, research articles, and popular science books. Although the study of this industry is still stigmatized as frivolous and ‘only’ game oriented, those who grew up with video games are changing things, especially research agendas, the acceptance of studies, and their interpretation. This book describes and defines video games as their own special medium. They are not pinball from which they grew, nor movies which they sometimes resemble. They are a unique form of entertainment based on meaningful interactions between individuals and machine across a growing sector of the population. The Video Game Industry provides a reference foundation for individuals seriously interested in the industry at the academic level. As a result, this book will serve as a reference in curricula associated with video game development for years to come.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Practices by : Elizabeth Shove
Download or read book Sustainable Practices written by Elizabeth Shove and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is widely agreed to be one the greatest challenges facing society today. Mitigating and adapting to it is certain to require new ways of living. Thus far efforts to promote less resource-intensive habits and routines have centred on typically limited understandings of individual agency, choice and change. This book shows how much more the social sciences have to offer. The contributors to Sustainable Practices: Social Theory and Climate Change come from different disciplines – sociology, geography, economics and philosophy – but are alike in taking social theories of practice as a common point of reference. This volume explores questions which arise from this distinctive and fresh approach: how do practices and material elements circulate and intersect? how do complex infrastructures and systems form and break apart? how does the reproduction of social practice sustain related patterns of inequality and injustice? This collection shows how social theories of practice can help us understand what societal transitions towards sustainability might involve, and how they might be achieved. It will be of interest to students and researchers in sociology, environmental studies, geography, philosophy and economics, and to policy makers and advisors working in this field.
