Book excerpt: Fuzzy Sets in Decision Analysis, Operations Research and Statistics includes chapters on fuzzy preference modeling, multiple criteria analysis, ranking and sorting methods, group decision-making and fuzzy game theory. It also presents optimization techniques such as fuzzy linear and non-linear programming, applications to graph problems and fuzzy combinatorial methods such as fuzzy dynamic programming. In addition, the book also accounts for advances in fuzzy data analysis, fuzzy statistics, and applications to reliability analysis. These topics are covered within four parts: Decision Making, Mathematical Programming, Statistics and Data Analysis, and Reliability, Maintenance and Replacement. The scope and content of the book has resulted from multiple interactions between the editor of the volume, the series editors, the series advisory board, and experts in each chapter area. Each chapter was written by a well-known researcher on the topic and reviewed by other experts in the area. These expert reviewers sometimes became co-authors because of the extent of their contribution to the chapter. As a result, twenty-five authors from twelve countries and four continents were involved in the creation of the 13 chapters, which enhances the international character of the project and gives an idea of how carefully the Handbook has been developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After developing fuzzy set theory, many contributors focused their research on the extension of fuzzy sets and their computational methodologies, strengthening modern science and technology. In some real-life phenomena, the conventional methods and traditional fuzzy sets cannot be explained, whereas the extension of fuzzy sets and effective new computing methods can explain it adequately. This edited book presents a new view of fuzzy set-measurement methods entitled "Fuzzy Optimization, Decision Making and Operations Research: Theory and Applications", which deals with different perspectives and areas of research. All chapters are divided into three parts: fuzzy optimization, fuzzy decision-making, and fuzzy operation research. The goal of this book is to provide a relevant methodological framework covering the core fields of fuzzy decision-making method, fuzzy optimization method, fuzzy graphics method, fuzzy operations research, fuzzy optimization using graph theory, fuzzy support systems and its real and industrial applications. For many people, fuzzy words' industrial engineering and scientific meanings are still an advanced system for improving modern science and technology. Although fuzzy logic can be applied to many different areas, people do not know how different fuzzy approaches can be applied to various products currently on the market. It is written for professionals who wish to share their expertise, improve their findings, and provide relevant information in the fields of fuzzy methods and their application in decision-making, optimization theory, graph theory and operations research. This book is aimed at experts and practitioners in the fields of fuzzy optimization, fuzzy decision-making, and fuzzy operation research.

Its four-part organization provides easy referencing of recent as well as older results in the field. The first part discusses the historical emergence of fuzzy sets, and delves into fuzzy set connectives, and the representation and measurement of membership functions. The second part covers fuzzy relations, including orderings, similarity, and relational equations. The third part, devoted to uncertainty modelling, introduces possibility theory, contrasting and relating it with probabilities, and reviews information measures of specificity and fuzziness. The last part concerns fuzzy sets on the real line - computation with fuzzy intervals, metric topology of fuzzy numbers, and the calculus of fuzzy-valued functions. Each chapter is written by one or more recognized specialists and offers a tutorial introduction to the topics, together with an extensive bibliography.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades since its inception by L. Zadeh, the theory of fuzzy sets has matured into a wide-ranging collection of concepts, models, and tech niques for dealing with complex phenomena which do not lend themselves to analysis by classical methods based on probability theory and bivalent logic. Nevertheless, a question which is frequently raised by the skeptics is: Are there, in fact, any significant problem areas in which the use of the theory of fuzzy sets leads to results which could not be obtained by classical methods? The approximately 5000 publications in this area, which are scattered over many areas such as artificial intelligence, computer science, control engineering, decision making, logic, operations research, pattern recognition, robotics and others, provide an affirmative answer to this question. In spite of the large number of publications, good and comprehensive textbooks which could facilitate the access of newcomers to this area and support teaching were missing until recently. To help to close this gap and to provide a textbook for courses in fuzzy set theory which can also be used as an introduction to this field, the first volume ofthis book was published in 1985 [Zimmermann 1985 b]. This volume tried to cover fuzzy set theory and its applications as extensively as possible. Applications could, therefore, only be described to a limited extent and not very detailed.

Book excerpt: Since its inception 20 years ago the theory of fuzzy sets has advanced in a variety of ways and in many disciplines. Applications of this theory can be found in artificial intelligence, computer science, control engineering, decision theory, expert systems, logic, management science, operations research, pattern recognition, robotics and others. Theoretical advances, too, have been made in many directions, and a gap has arisen between advanced theoretical topics and applications, which often use the theory at a rather elementary level. The primary goal of this book is to close this gap - to provide a textbook for courses in fuzzy set theory and a book that can be used as an introduction. This revised book updates the research agenda, with the chapters of possibility theory, fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning, expert systems and control, decision making and fuzzy set models in operations research being restructured and rewritten. Exercises have been added to almost all chapters and a teacher's manual is available upon request.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduce yourself to the foundations of fuzzy logic with this easy-to-use guide Many fields studied are defined by imprecise information or high degrees of uncertainty. When this uncertainty derives from randomness, traditional probabilistic statistical methods are adequate to address it; more everyday forms of vagueness and imprecision, however, require the toolkit associated with 'fuzzy sets’ and ‘fuzzy logic’. Engineering and mathematical fields related to artificial intelligence, operations research and decision theory are now strongly driven by fuzzy set theory. Mathematical Foundation of Fuzzy Sets introduces readers to the theoretical background and practical techniques required to apply fuzzy logic to engineering and mathematical problems. It introduces the mathematical foundations of fuzzy sets as well as the current cutting edge of fuzzy-set operations and arithmetic, offering a rounded introduction to this essential field of applied mathematics. The result can be used either as a textbook or as an invaluable reference for working researchers and professionals. Mathematical Foundation of Fuzzy Sets offers the reader: Detailed coverage of set operations, fuzzification of crisp operations, and more Logical structure in which each chapter builds carefully on previous results Intuitive structure, divided into ‘basic’ and ‘advanced’ sections, to facilitate use in one- or two-semester courses Mathematical Foundation of Fuzzy Sets is essential for graduate students and academics in engineering and applied mathematics, particularly those doing work in artificial intelligence, decision theory, operations research, and related fields.

Book excerpt: This book starts with the basic concepts of Fuzzy Logic: the membership function, the intersection and the union of fuzzy sets, fuzzy numbers, and the extension principle underlying the algorithmic operations. Several chapters are devoted to applications of Fuzzy Logic in Operations Research: PERT planning with uncertain activity durations, Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) with vague preferential statements, and Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) with weighted degrees of satisfaction. New items are: Fuzzy PERT using activity durations with triangular membership functions, Fuzzy SMART with a sensitivity analysis based upon Fuzzy Logic, the Additive and the Multiplicative AHP with a similar feature, ELECTRE using the ideas of the AHP and SMART, and a comparative study of the ideal-point methods for MOO. Finally, earlier studies of colour perception illustrate the attempts to find a physiological basis for the set-theoretical and the algorithmic operations in Fuzzy Logic. The last chapter also discusses some key issues in linguistic categorization and the prospects of Fuzzy Logic as a multi-disciplinary research activity. Audience: Researchers and students working in applied mathematics, operations research, management science, business administration, econometrics, industrial engineering, information systems, artificial intelligence, mathematical psychology, and psycho-physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide the reader who is interested in applications of fuzzy set theory, in the first place with a text to which he or she can refer for the basic theoretical ideas, concepts and techniques in this field and in the second place with a vast and up to date account of the literature. Although there are now many books about fuzzy set theory, and mainly about its applications, e. g. in control theory, there is not really a book available which introduces the elementary theory of fuzzy sets, in what I would like to call "a good degree of generality". To write a book which would treat the entire range of results concerning the basic theoretical concepts in great detail and which would also deal with all possible variants and alternatives of the theory, such as e. g. rough sets and L-fuzzy sets for arbitrary lattices L, with the possibility-probability theories and interpretations, with the foundation of fuzzy set theory via multi-valued logic or via categorical methods and so on, would have been an altogether different project. This book is far more modest in its mathematical content and in its scope.
