Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.

Book Synopsis The Once and Future Great Lakes Country by : John L. Riley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North America's Great Lakes country has experienced centuries of upheaval. Its landscapes are utterly changed from what they were five hundred years ago. The region's superabundant fish and wildlife and its magnificent forests and prairies astonished European newcomers who called it an earthly paradise but then ushered in an era of disease, warfare, resource depletion, and land development that transformed it forever. The Once and Future Great Lakes Country is a history of environmental change in the Great Lakes region, looking as far back as the last ice age, and also reflecting on modern trajectories of change, many of them positive. John Riley chronicles how the region serves as a continental crossroads, one that experienced massive declines in its wildlife and native plants in the centuries after European contact, and has begun to see increased nature protection and re-wilding in recent decades. Yet climate change, globalization, invasive species, and urban sprawl are today exerting new pressures on the region’s ecology. Covering a vast geography encompassing two Canadian provinces and nine American states, The Once and Future Great Lakes Country provides both a detailed ecological history and a broad panorama of this vast region. It blends the voices of early visitors with the hopes of citizens now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical reference accounts for the first decade of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division's place within the United States Army Corps of Engineers (U.S.A.C.E.) and its navigational projects that began in 1824. The Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, formed in 1997, manages two magnificent water resource systems--the Great Lakes and the Ohio River basin. The Great Lakes and Ohio River Division inherited command of seven district offices located in Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Huntington, Louisville, Nashville, and Pittsburgh. In this first decade of service, this division saw many critical changes. This resource traces those changes from the formative challenges of 1997 through the millennium matrix, global deployment, and regional management years into an urgent military construction program at the end of its first decade. It underscores numerous challenges and accomplishments during this timeframe from historical phases to current resolutions. Our History Is the Future is at once a work of history, a personal story, and a manifesto. Now available in paperback on the fifth anniversary of its original publication, Our History Is the Future features a new afterword by Nick Estes about the rising indigenous campaigns to protect our environment from extractive industries and to shape new ways of relating to one another and the world. In this award-winning book, Estes traces traditions of Indigenous resistance leading to the present campaigns against fossil fuel pipelines, such as the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, from the days of the Missouri River trading forts through the Indian Wars, the Pick-Sloan dams, the American Indian Movement, and the campaign for Indigenous rights at the United Nations. In 2016, a small protest encampment at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota, initially established to block construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline, grew to be the largest Indigenous protest movement in the twenty-first century, attracting tens of thousands of Indigenous and non-Native allies from around the world. Its slogan “Mni Wiconi”—Water Is Life—was about more than just a pipeline. Water Protectors knew this battle for Native sovereignty had already been fought many times before, and that, even with the encampment gone, their anti-colonial struggle would continue. While a historian by trade, Estes draws on observations from the encampments and from growing up as a citizen of the Oceti Sakowin (the Nation of the Seven Council Fires) and his own family’s rich history of struggle.

Book Synopsis Forecast of Future Ohio River Basin Waterway Traffic Based on Shippers' Surveys. Summary Report by :
Download or read book Forecast of Future Ohio River Basin Waterway Traffic Based on Shippers' Surveys. Summary Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report to the Corps of Engineers describes one of three independent but complementary studies of future freight traffic on the Ohio River Basin Navigation System. Each of the studies considers existing waterborne commerce and develops a consistent set of projections of future traffic demands for all of the navigable waterways of the Basin. Each report contains information on past and present waterborne commerce in the Basin and projections by commodity group and origin-destination areas from 1975 to at least 1990. The study and the 1975-1990 traffic projections discussed in this report were developed by surveying all waterway users in the Ohio River Basin through a combined mail survey and personal interview approach. The purpose of the survey was to obtain an estimate from each individual shipper of his future commodity movements by specified origins and destinations, as well as other associated traffic information.
