L'utilisation de fonctions de croyance permet de prendre en compte l'incertitude de la classification, et de labelliser un son comme « inconnu ».Fusion audiovisuelle pour la détection de locuteurs successifs dans une conversation : Une méthode de détection de locuteurs est proposée dans le cas du robot immobile, placé comme témoin d'une interaction sociale. Elle repose sur une fusion audiovisuelle probabiliste. Cette méthode a été testée sur des vidéos acquises par le robot.Navigation dédiée à la détection d'humains à l'aide d'une fusion multimodale : A partir d'informations provenant des capteurs hétérogènes, le robot cherche des humains de manière autonome dans un environnement connu. Les informations sont fusionnées au sein d'une grille de perception multimodale. Cette grille permet au robot de prendre une décision quant à son prochain déplacement, à l'aide d'un automate reposant sur des niveaux de priorité des informations perçues. Ce système a été implémenté et testé sur un robot Q.bo.Modélisation crédibiliste de l'environnement pour la navigation : La construction de la grille de perception multimodale est améliorée à l'aide d'un mécanisme de fusion reposant sur la théorie des fonctions de croyance. Ceci permet au robot de maintenir une grille « évidentielle » dans le temps comprenant l'information perçue et son incertitude. Ce système a d'abord été évalué en simulation, puis sur le robot Q.bo.

Dans ce cadre, notre contribution porte plus spécifiquement sur la perception multimodale des usagers du robot (utilisateur et passants). La perception multimodale porte sur le développement et l'intégration de fonctions perceptuelles pour la détection, l'identification de personnes et l'analyse spatio-temporelle de leurs déplacements afin de communiquer avec le robot. La détection proximale des usagers du robot s'appuie sur une perception multimodale couplant des données hétérogènes issues de différents capteurs. Les humains détectés puis reconnus sont alors suivis dans le flot vidéo délivré par une caméra embarquée afin d'en interpréter leurs déplacements. Une première contribution réside dans la mise en place de fonctions de détection et d'identification de personnes depuis un robot mobile. Une deuxième contribution concerne l'analyse spatio-temporelle de ces percepts pour le suivi de l'utilisateur dans un premier temps, de l'ensemble des personnes situées aux alentours du robot dans un deuxième temps. Enfin, dans le sens des exigences de la robotique, la thèse comporte deux volets : un volet formel et algorithmique qui tire pertinence et validation d'un fort volet expérimental et intégratif. Ces développements s'appuient sur notre plateforme Rackham et celle mise en œuvre durant le projet CommRob.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, many researchers have dedicated their efforts to constructing revolutionary machines and to providing them with forms of artificial intelligence to perform some of the most hazardous, risky or monotonous tasks historically assigned to human beings. Among those machines, mobile robots are undoubtedly at the cutting edge of current research directions. A rough classification of mobile robots can be considered: on the one hand, mobile robots oriented to human-made indoor environments; on the other hand, mobile robots oriented to unstructured outdoor environments, which could include flying oriented robots, space-oriented robots and underwater robots. The most common motion mechanism for surface mobile robots is the wheel-based mechanism, adapted both to flat surfaces, found in human-made environments, and to rough terrain, found in outdoor environments. However, some researchers have reported successful developments with leg-based mobile robots capable of climbing up stairs, although they require further investigation. The research work presented here focuses on wheel-based mobile robots that navigate in human-made indoor environments. The main problems described throughout this book are: Representation and integration of uncertain geometric information by means of the Symmetries and Perturbations Model (SPmodel). This model combines the use of probability theory to represent the imprecision in the location of a geometric element, and the theory of symmetries to represent the partiality due to characteristics of each type of geometric element. A solution to the first location problem, that is, the computation of an estimation for the mobile robot location when the vehicle is completely lost in the environment. The problem is formulated as a search in an interpretation tree using efficient matching algorithms and geometric constraints to reduce the size of the solution space. The book proposes a new probabilistic framework adapted to the problem of simultaneous localization and map building for mobile robots: the Symmetries and Perturbations Map (SPmap). This framework has been experimentally validated by a complete experiment which profited from ground-truth to accurately validate the precision and the appropriateness of the approach. The book emphasizes the generality of the solutions proposed to the different problems and their independence with respect to the exteroceptive sensors mounted on the mobile robot. Theoretical results are complemented by real experiments, where the use of multisensor-based approaches is highlighted.

Book excerpt: Charles Sanders Peirce was born in September 1839 and died five months before the guns of August 1914. He is perhaps the most important mind the United States has ever produced. He made significant contributions throughout his life as a mathematician, astronomer, chemist, geodesist, surveyor, cartographer, metrologist, engineer, and inventor. He was a psychologist, a philologist, a lexicographer, a historian of science, a lifelong student of medicine, and, above all, a philosopher, whose special fields were logic and semiotics. He is widely credited with being the founder of pragmatism. In terms of his importance as a philosopher and a scientist, he has been compared to Plato and Aristotle. He himself intended "to make a philosophy like that of Aristotle." Peirce was also a tormented and in many ways tragic figure. He suffered throughout his life from various ailments, including a painful facial neuralgia, and had wide swings of mood which frequently left him depressed to the state of inertia, and other times found him explosively violent. Despite his consistent belief that ideas could find meaning only if they "worked" in the world, he himself found it almost impossible to make satisfactory economic and social arrangements for himself. This brilliant scientist, this great philosopher, this astounding polymath was never able, throughout his long life, to find an academic post that would allow him to pursue his major interest, the study of logic, and thus also fulfill his destiny as America's greatest philosopher. Much of his work remained unpublished in his own time, and is only now finding publication in a coherent, chronologically organized edition. Even more astounding is that, despite many monographic studies, there has been no biography until now, almost eighty years after his death. Brent has studied the Peirce papers in detail and enriches his account with numerous quotations from letters by Peirce and by his friends. This is a fascinating account of a prodigious talent who, though unable to find a suitable accommodation within his own society, nevertheless managed to produce an enormous body of brilliant work. Brent's analysis uncovers a double tragedy: that of a flawed genius, and of a society unwilling or unable to recognize and support its own best son.
