Book Synopsis Selected Letters of Sir J. G. Frazer by : Robert Ackerman
Download or read book Selected Letters of Sir J. G. Frazer written by Robert Ackerman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fully annotated edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J. G. Frazer (1854-1941), the eminent anthropologist, classicist, and historian of religion. Frazer was read by virtually everyone working in those fields in the first third of the twentieth century. His great work, The Golden Bough, offered a grand vision of humanity's mental and spiritual evolution - from vain attempts to compel the gods to do our bidding (which Frazer called magic) through equally vain attempts to propitiate the gods through prayer and sacrifice (his characterization of religion) to rationality and science. His richly varied correspondence with prominent figures such as Edmund Gosse, A. E. Housman, and Bronislaw Malinowski, among others, offers an unparalleled insight into British intellectual life of the time, and also throws light upon the composition of The Golden Bough itself.

Book Synopsis Primitive Classification (Routledge Revivals) by : Emile Durkheim
Download or read book Primitive Classification (Routledge Revivals) written by Emile Durkheim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this influential work, first published in English in 1963, Durkheim and Mauss claim that the individual mind is capable of classification and they seek the origin of the ‘classificatory function’ in society. On the basis of an intensive examination of forms and principles of symbolic classification reported from the Australian aborigines, the Zuñi and traditional China, they try to establish a formal correspondence between social and symbolic classification. From this they argue that the mode of classification is determined by the form of society and that the notions of space, time, hierarchy, number, class and other such cognitive categories are products of society. Dr Needham’s introduction assesses the validity of Durkhiem and Mauss’s argument, traces its continued influence in various disciplines, and indicates its analytical value for future researches in social anthropology.

Book Synopsis The Warburg Years (1919-1933) by : Ernst Cassirer
Download or read book The Warburg Years (1919-1933) written by Ernst Cassirer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish German philosopher Ernst Cassirer was a leading proponent of the Marburg school of neo-Kantianism. The essays in this volume provide a window into Cassirer’s discovery of the symbolic nature of human existence—that our entire emotional and intellectual life is configured and formed through the originary expressive power of word and image, that it is in and through the symbolic cultural systems of language, art, myth, religion, science, and technology that human life realizes itself and attains not only its form, its visibility, but also its reality. Thought and being are set in opposition and united in genuine correspondence by the symbolic strife between them that Cassirer calls Auseinandersetzung, which determines the ethical relationship of the self to the other.

Book Synopsis Totemism and Exogamy - A Treatise on Certain Early Forms of Superstition and Society by : James George Frazer
Download or read book Totemism and Exogamy - A Treatise on Certain Early Forms of Superstition and Society written by James George Frazer and published by SEVERUS Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a plain record of a curious form of society which must soon be numbered with the past, the book may continue to possess an interest even when, with the progress of its knowledge, its errors shall have been corrected and its theories perhaps superseded by others which make a nearer approach to truth." Despite having been criticised later, the book at hand is an important and interesting document of its time. It provided the first complete ethnographical summary of totemism and exogamy, dwelling on its religious and social aspects. Totemism is described as a religious and social system in which people or clans regard themselves as related to certain objects. Exogamy, which is often found in conjunction with totemism, is represented as a system which only allows marriage outside of a specific group. On the whole, Frazer's work includes the origins as well as an ethnographical survey of totemism and exogamy in Australian Aboriginal tribes. Sir James George Frazer was a Scottish social anthropologist who contributed mainly to the studies of mythology and comparative religion and was the first to detail the relations between myths and rituals. His work Totemism and Exogamy is also frequently cited by Sigmund Freud in his own study Totem and Taboo.
