Book excerpt: With the hundredth of anniversary of the South African (or Boer) War of 1899-1902 fast approaching, the campaign is receiving increased attention from military enthusiasts of all types. R.G. Hackett's bibliography goes far beyond the bare listing of author, date, contents, etc. that one so often encounters, to become a unique evocation of the era. The original covers of over a hundred books of the period are shown, with several dozen in full color, often showing regimental badges and colors. Most books published before 1920 are covered, with the author drawing not only on previously published bibliographies, but the private records of London rare book dealers and individual collections such as that of the British actor Kenneth Griffith. With a more just society now prevailing in South Africa, the sympathy felt at the time for the Boers by some can once again be appreciated. In addition to many British regimental accounts, this compilation also contains accounts of women in the Boer war effort, Richard Harding Davis' shrewd observations, and the memoirs of a West Point graduate in the Irish-American Brigade in Boer service. South African War Books not only belongs in any comprehensive reference library, but will also be treasured by anyone seriously interested in the period of the colonial wars.

Book Synopsis The Freedom Movement's Lost Legacy by : Keith P. Griffler
Download or read book The Freedom Movement's Lost Legacy written by Keith P. Griffler and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century after emancipation, the long shadow of slavery left African Americans well short of the freedom promised to them. While sharecropping and debt peonage entrapped Black people in the South, European colonialism had bred a new slavery that menaced the liberty of even more Africans. A core group of Black freedom movement leaders, including Ida B. Wells and W. E. B. Du Bois, followed their nineteenth-century predecessors in insisting that the continuation of racial slavery anywhere put Black freedom on the line everywhere. They even predicted the consequences that ignited the recent nationwide Black Lives Matter movement—the rise of a prison industrial complex and the consequent erosion of African Americans' faith in the criminal justice system. The Freedom Movement's Lost Legacy: Black Abolitionism since Emancipation is the first historical account of the Black freedom movement's response to modern slavery in the twentieth century. Keith P. Griffler details how the mainstream international antislavery movement became complicit in the enslavement of Black and brown people across the world through its sponsorship of racist international antislavery law that gave the "new slavery" explicit legal sanction. Black freedom movement activists, thinkers, and organizers did more than call out this breathtaking betrayal of abolitionist principles: they dedicated themselves to the eradication of slavery in whatever forms it assumed on the global stage and developed an expansive vision of human freedom. This timely and important work reminds us that the resurgence of today's Black freedom movements is a manifestation and continuation of the traditions and efforts of these early Black leaders and abolitionists—an important chapter in the history of antislavery and the ongoing Black freedom struggle.

Book Synopsis Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa by : Andrew W.M. Smith
Download or read book Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa written by Andrew W.M. Smith and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at decolonization in the conditional tense, this volume teases out the complex and uncertain ends of British and French empire in Africa during the period of ‘late colonial shift’ after 1945. Rather than view decolonization as an inevitable process, the contributors together explore the crucial historical moments in which change was negotiated, compromises were made, and debates were staged. Three core themes guide the analysis: development, contingency and entanglement. The chapters consider the ways in which decolonization was governed and moderated by concerns about development and profit. A complementary focus on contingency allows deeper consideration of how colonial powers planned for ‘colonial futures’, and how divergent voices greeted the end of empire. Thinking about entanglements likewise stresses both the connections that existed between the British and French empires in Africa, and those that endured beyond the formal transfer of power.
