Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An oncologist’s integrative path to treating and living better with or beyond cancer Dr. M. Laura Nasi presents a new way of looking at how we view and treat cancer. With current advances in medicine, we’re learning more about the ways different aspects of our lives and health impact and interact with one another—why does one long-term smoker get diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer while another remains cancer-free? Why does someone exposed to a known carcinogen get sick while someone else is apparently immune? What seemingly unrelated factors end up playing key roles in disease etiology, progression, and prognosis? In this well-researched, inspiring, and easy-to-read guide, Dr. Nasi offers an integrative, whole-person approach to cancer, and explains how it is a systemic disease manifesting a global condition locally. Conventional medicine focuses on attacking malignant cells. Integrative medicine encourages chemo and radiation when necessary, while also focusing on a patient’s internal balance to help halt the disease. Nasi draws on the latest research on the PNIE (psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine) network to help our systems recognize, repair, or eliminate the cancer cells, focusing on nutrition, stress management, exercise, adequate sleep, healthy relationships, and other body/mind/spirit modalities. Dr. Nasi encourages patients to become empowered agents of their own care.

Book excerpt: An oncology chaplain shares stories from her own battle with breast cancer in this frank, often hilarious memoir reminiscent of the works of Nora Ephron For more than two decades, author Debra Jarvis has counseled cancer patients in her work as a chaplain, working with them from the point of diagnosis through their treatment and recovery. Then, in an ironic twist, she herself was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. It’s Not About the Hair is Jarvis’ warm and wise account of her own journey as a cancer patient, having already guided so many others through the same battle. With humor, candor, and an indomitable spirit, Jarvis opens a rare window into the interwoven world of medical technology and procedure, human vulnerability and strength, and the spiritual issues that converge in the experience of living through illness and living through life.

Book excerpt: Anyone who hears the dreaded word "chemotherapy" naturally experiences feelings of fear and apprehension. For Steve Givens that one word was the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one that would change him in profound ways. He believes that a brotherhood and sisterhood exists between those who have battled a chronic disease or undergone chemotherapy. They know one another's pain, numbness, and exhaustion. They smile at one another when they meet in the ahllways or while blood is drawn because they can relate and because they know. And here he shares his story with "kin," those who, like him, have no choice but acceptance. He still experiences times of pain, sickness, confusion, and sadness on his journey to wellness, but he also feels renewed and reborn spiritually. Here he reveals that he has chosen the way of faith and God because he knows of no other way that brings peace and gives him a reason to go on. He has opted to embrace his disease and its treatment--but not by himself alone. As he says, "My arms are not big enough or strong enough for the battle." He believes, however, that they arms of God are big enough to encircle him and his disease. This is a beautifully told story of struggle and pain, but ultimately of peace and acceptance, a wonderful resource for all who are facing chronic illness and its treatment.

Book excerpt: “Build-A-Boob” is the inspirational story of one woman’s refusal to give up on having her breasts and her life restored after breast cancer radiation destroyed her chest at the age of 46. Breast cancer affects us all. Most of us know someone who has it or has had it. What we don’t know and don’t often hear about are the stories of pain and the physical and emotional scars that are left behind. This is about survival .........after the cure. Her story offers hope to millions of women, showing how actually using liposuction can rebuild a breast by regenerating one’s own skin. Very few plastic surgeons are currently using this procedure and this is an important issue for all women. The technique of using liposuction to rebuild a breast in its entirety is not new. What is new is that Lisa Masters’ stems cells from her fat totally restored the skin and fat damaged by radiation allowing the eventual insertion of a permanent implant. All of this was done through trial and error, and her plastic surgeon, Dr. Sergio Zamora says that this procedure works every single time. The process took four and half years to complete. In addition, she addresses medical insurance concerns and how her HMO, Florida Health Care BC/BS, supported her through this lengthy process. Lisa, like millions after being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, went through the typical therapies. She underwent two lumpectomies, chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy followed by immediate reconstruction with the insertion of tissue expanders and a hysterectomy. When she healed from the surgeries, she had radiation therapy. It only took 15 additional surgeries, but, Lisa Masters now has two breasts and a purpose...to spread the word and break the silence of those who live with the scars that breast cancer has left behind. The book is written from her perspective which includes 25 very graphic breast photos from beginning to end along with her own photo in order to make the story personal. The medical photos alone tell a story of success and they are difficult to look at. However, she feels those photos must be shown to the world and must be connected to a face; her face. Build-A-Boob talks about Lisa Masters’ family and their life prior to cancer. The book also talks about the toil this disease took on everyone involved. “Build-A-Boob” is a story of failure, pain, determination and success told with humor and optimism that involves a tenacious plastic surgeon and a woman who never settled. Included is a “Forward” written by plastic surgeon Dr. Sergio Zamora, Daytona Beach, FL

Book excerpt: The first book on the subject of breast cancer survival from the point of view of a woman who has the support of seven sisters, If We Must Dance, Then I Will Lead combines memoir and science writing. A fresh voice tells a story of surviving a labyrinth of knives, needles, and radiation beams. Jane and her sisters were cut from the same cloth. The nuns told them, Take it on the chin; Mom said, Offer it up for the poor souls in purgatory; Daddy said, Mind your mother. There they were, grounded in acquiescence, long-suffering, and obedient when the beast tapped her on the shoulder and asked, Shall we dance? If We Must Dance, Then I Will Lead is laced with humor to soften the starkness of medical terminology. Julie, the certified cranial prosthesis fitter, sets Jane up with a wig that gives her a hairstyle that looks like the ladies at Thursday night Bingo. Esther, the breast prosthesis fitter, insists that shes a D cup when shes been a 36B since high school and doesnt like the look of a rubber nipple showing through her sweater! This memoir will encourage women to advocate for themselves in the scary world of oncology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It hurts to be beautiful" has been a cliche for centuries. What has been far less appreciated is how much it hurts not to be beautiful. The Beauty Bias explores our cultural preoccupation with attractiveness, the costs it imposes, and the responses it demands. Beauty may be only skin deep, but the damages associated with its absence go much deeper. Unattractive individuals are less likely to be hired and promoted, and are assumed less likely to have desirable traits, such as goodness, kindness, and honesty. Three quarters of women consider appearance important to their self image and over a third rank it as the most important factor. Although appearance can be a significant source of pleasure, its price can also be excessive, not only in time and money, but also in physical and psychological health. Our annual global investment in appearance totals close to $200 billion. Many individuals experience stigma, discrimination, and related difficulties, such as eating disorders, depression, and risky dieting and cosmetic procedures. Women bear a vastly disproportionate share of these costs, in part because they face standards more exacting than those for men, and pay greater penalties for falling short. The Beauty Bias explores the social, biological, market, and media forces that have contributed to appearance-related problems, as well as feminism's difficulties in confronting them. The book also reviews why it matters. Appearance-related bias infringes fundamental rights, compromises merit principles, reinforces debilitating stereotypes, and compounds the disadvantages of race, class, and gender. Yet only one state and a half dozen localities explicitly prohibit such discrimination. The Beauty Bias provides the first systematic survey of how appearance laws work in practice, and a compelling argument for extending their reach. The book offers case histories of invidious discrimination and a plausible legal and political strategy for addressing them. Our prejudices run deep, but we can do far more to promote realistic and healthy images of attractiveness, and to reduce the price of their pursuit.
