Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of unsteady aerodynamics and its underlying principles. The author provides the readers with a comprehensive review of the fundamental physics of free and forced unsteadiness, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers modern topics related to the developments made in recent years, especially in relation to wing flapping for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in aerodynamics and also serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references. This 3rd edition includes a new chapter about unsteady applications related to the thrust optimization, aerodynamic stability and trim because there has been much progress in unsteady applications of the flapping wing technology. In addition, further material is presented in Appendix for evaluating the stability derivatives so that no derivation of equations is left incomplete but not overdone in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady Aerodynamics A comprehensive overview of unsteady aerodynamics and its applications The study of unsteady aerodynamics goes back a century and has only become more significant as aircraft become increasingly sophisticated, fly faster, and their structures are lighter and more flexible. Progress in the understanding of flow physics, computing power and techniques, and modelling technologies has led to corresponding progress in unsteady aerodynamics, with a wide range of methods currently used to predict the performance of engineering structures under unsteady conditions. Unsteady Aerodynamics offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of the application of potential and vortex methods to the subject. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamentals of unsteady flow, it then discusses the modelling of attached and separated, incompressible and compressible flows around two-dimensional and three-dimensional bodies. The result is an essential resource for design and simulation in aerospace engineering. Unsteady Aerodynamics readers will also find: MATLAB examples and exercises throughout, with codes and solutions on an accompanying website Detailed discussion of most classes of unsteady phenomena, including flapping flight, transonic flow, dynamic stall, flow around bluff bodies and more Validation of theoretical and numerical predictions using comparisons to experimental data from the literature Unsteady Aerodynamics is ideal for researchers, engineers, and advanced students in aerospace engineering.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic behavior of aircraft in high performance maneuvres is greatly affected by various unsteady flow phenomena, particularly at high angles of attack, where extensive regions of separated flow and several systems of symmetric vortices are often present. Such flows, already rather complex in steady flight, become even more involved in oscillatory or high rate-of-turn flight, where the time lags associated with the various vortical and separated flows become a significant factor affecting profoundly both the static and the dynamic aerodynamic parameters of the aircraft. A good understanding of unsteady aerodynamics is also important for design of advanced flight control systems, prediction of wing structural and maneuvre loads and buffet prediction. This symposium examined recent advances in the methods for experimental and computational prediction of non-linear flow phenomena in unsteady aerodynamics and of stability parameters required to describe adequately the dynamic behavior of aircraft will special emphasis on high-angle-of-attack situations. The major program topics were: (1) Unsteady aerodynamics, (2) Dynamic stability parameters, and (3) Applications to aircraft Dynamics. In the first part, topics such as unsteady boundary layers, unsteady separation and stall, buffeting and unsteady airloads were discussed. The second part covered wind-tunnel and flight-test techniques, with special emphasis on the measurement of non-linearities, aerodynamic cross-coupling, hysteresis and time-dependent effects. In part three, various applications of the above to the actual prediction of aircraft dynamics were described, including topics such as mathematical modelling, bifurcation theory, prediction of wing rock, advanced control systems, etc.

Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Aeroacoustics with Applications to Aeropropulsion Systems from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press Aerospace series, is the go-to reference on the topic, providing a modern take on the fundamental theory and applications relating to prediction and control of all major noise sources in aeropropulsion systems. This important reference compiles the latest knowledge and research advances, considering both the physics of aerodynamic noise generation in aero-engines and related numerical prediction techniques. Additionally, it introduces new vortex sound interaction models, a transfer element method, and a combustion instability model developed by the authors. Focusing on propulsion systems from inlet to exit, including combustion noise, this new resource will aid graduate students, researchers, and R&D engineers in solving the aircraft noise problems that currently challenge the industry. Updates the knowledge-base on the sound source generated by aeropropulsion systems, from inlet to exit, including combustion noise Covers new aerodynamic noise control technology aimed at the low-noise design of next generation aero-engines, including topics such as aerodynamic noise and aero-engine noise control Includes new, cutting-edge models and methods developed by an author team led by the editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Aeronautics and Astronautics Considers both the physics of aerodynamic noise generation in aero-engines and related numerical prediction techniques
