Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory text covers the many fundamental topics involved with physical surveillance for uniformed and plainclothes law enforcement personnel. Physical surveillance is one of the most essential resources available to investigators and officers for detecting criminal activities and building a case against the suspected offenders. As such, it is important to build the skills necessary for observing criminal suspects while remaining undetected. The first chapter explains that physical surveillance is the 3direct observation of people, vehicles, or activity taking place at some given location for the purpose of obtaining information.4 According to the authors, physical surveillance remains more of an art form than a series of techniques; however, it is possible to offer guidance toward the successful completion of physical surveillance. As such, the authors offer instruction, in various chapters, on how to plan for a surveillance job as well as how to best carry out vehicle surveillance, foot surveillance, stationary surveillance, and undercover surveillance. Particular applications of surveillance are also discussed, including physical surveillance for private investigators and process servers, surveillance for drug investigations, night-time surveillance, and electronic surveillance. Other topics covered in the text are surveillance techniques for terrorism investigations and prostitution investigations. The authors offer a chapter on how to read the environment, including how to recognize and read environmental behavioral clues, neighborhood dynamics, and the routine behaviors of people and animals. Another chapter deals with the issue of vision and vision-aid equipment for surveillance officers. Similarly, the following chapter takes up the topic of surveillance photography and offers tips on types of cameras, video cameras, and film, as well as how to handle infrared photography. Final chapters offer tips for writing surveillance reports and the basics of the laws involving the use of physical and electronic surveillance. The authors caution that the techniques set forth in this text are best applied with variations that should be adapted to each individual setting of surveillance and the intended goal of the investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the fundamentals and techniques of the covert observation of persons, vehicles, and premises is presented. A wide variety of types of surveillance is reviewed with an indication of what is involved in each and under what conditions each is applicable. Stationary surveillance or stake-outs are discussed for both urban and rural settings. Some of the more effective vantage points are introduced and the use of pretexts for being in a given area for varying amounts of time is outlined. The text explains methods and techniques of moving surveillance, including foot and vehicle surveillance with one or more operatives. Possible pitfalls are delineated, along with evasive actions which the subject may use if he suspects that he is being surveilled. Countermeasures which the investigator may employ in the face of such evasive actions are discussed. Chapters cover vision extenders and photographic equipment, including illustrations of the devices and their applicability to surveillance operations. A special section discusses unique surveillance requirements for uniformed officers while on a normal tour of duty. Other topics include methods for relocating a subject who has eluded the investigator, the need for accuracy and conciseness in reporting, and undercover surveillance. The latter presents discussions of pretexts and of legal considerations. An index is included.

Book excerpt: This updated and expanded new edition is a significant revision of the second edition, presented 14 years previous. This edition provides the most current information about surveillance methods, supporting photographic equipment, and vision enhancing products. Although physical surveillance remains an intuitive art regarding the secret visual observation of a person, activity, or location, important new science and technology improved the tools and with that came enriched tradecraft. Physical surveillance may be urban or rural, stationary or mobile, foot or vehicular, or occur on public transportation. In fact, one surveillance operation can feature several or all of them. This edition presents the latest methods, which investigators continually adapt to the immediate circumstances. Updated chapters include: Surveillance Applications, Vehicular Surveillance, Stationary Surveillance, Undercover Surveillance, Vision and Aids for Vision Extension and Enhancement, Surveillance Photography, Tips for the Surveillant, and Report Writing. In addition the text is richly illustrated with important and helpful examples. Because physical surveillance precedes virtually all organized criminal and terrorist attacks, security personnel need the capacity to detect surveillance and that requires truly understanding it. Written in a style that professional investigators prefer, the information is presented quickly, decisively, and to the point. Whether the reader is a novice or veteran investigator, in law enforcement or civil investigation, this unique book offers a complete, cohesive, and expert text on the subject of physical surveillance. It represents the most current and authoritative resource available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveillance Countermeasures By: Aden C. Magee In today’s prolific hostile threat environment, surveillance countermeasures expertise is a necessary component of security knowledge. The wide range of increasingly unconstrained threats to the personal privacy and security of average citizens include common criminals and stalkers, private and corporate investigators, government-sponsored espionage and other covert agencies, and international crime and terrorist organizations. In virtually all cases, the elements that threaten individual, corporate, or national security conduct surveillance operations to further their objectives, or as the primary means to an end Surveillance countermeasures are actions taken by an individual or security detail to identify the presence of surveillance and, if necessary, to elude or evade the individual or group conducting the surveillance. Understanding how the surveillance threat thinks and reacts is the basis of effective surveillance countermeasures. This manual details surveillance countermeasures concepts, techniques, and procedures that are proven effective against the spectrum of surveillance capabilities ranging from the very basic to the world’s most sophisticated. This manual now supersedes the previous industry standards as the authoritative resource on surveillance countermeasures principles, procedures, and practices. This manual is a compilation of the most relevant details from two of the all-time classics and best-sellers in the genre – Surveillance Countermeasures and Countering Hostile Surveillance. It also draws precise threat/surveillance perspective from another of the all-time greats – Secrets of Surveillance. The fact that this manual consolidates the knowledge derived from these three unparalleled classics demonstrates that this manual now represents the full-spectrum amalgam of surveillance countermeasures methodologies ranging from the foundational baseline of tactics and techniques to the most advanced concepts and procedures. This revised instant classic for the genre also includes many additional details and special-interest topics to form an informational/educational resource like no other. Written by one of the rare breed who has actually stalked the streets and stood in the shadows, this manual presents surveillance countermeasures tradecraft from the theoretical to the practical levels in terms of the “art” and “science.” The execution of techniques as components of methodical procedures to effectively manipulate and exploit a hostile surveillance effort is representative of a security professional or security-conscious individual operating at the master’s level of surveillance countermeasures tradecraft. The information and instruction in this manual begins with the basics and then takes the practitioner to that level execution.

Book excerpt: The road to master of disguise is a difficult and exciting one, fraught with equal parts danger and intrigue, but fortunately you don’t have to go it alone. The book you now hold in your hands will serve as a roadmap through the disguise terrain; novices and masters alike will find in these pages invaluable wisdom, advice and guidance previously unavailable in such a concise format. Recent years have seen unprecedented technology advancements. However, investigation and intelligence agencies still need field personnel; they need feet on the ground. To be effective, investigators and clandestine service persons need strong tradecraft skills that include the ability to disguise themselves. This book presents undercover disguise methods that came into focus in the clandestine services of World War II, evolved during the Cold War, and today features modern innovations. Here the reader discovers the latest disguise technologies, traditional and innovative methods not taught by police academies or included in college law enforcement and criminal justice curriculums. Customary purposes for disguise include to avoid recognition, support a pretext character and the corresponding undercover operation, prevent somebody accurately describing the agent, and to thwart physical surveillance. Naturally, some disguises are quicker to implement than others and some are more believable. Some disguises withstand prolonged close-up scrutiny, whereas others are suitable only when viewed briefly or from afar. The authors have removed the mystery and made short work of carving out a path for anyone looking to hone their craft in the art of disguise, ensuring success for all who are daring enough to pursue this road less traveled.
