Book excerpt: This paper summarizes basic studies that were conducted to correlate the impact resistance of graphite-fiber-reinforced composites with polymer matrix properties. Three crosslinked epoxy resins and a linear polysulfone were selected as composite matrices. As a group, these resins possess a significantly large range of mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the resins and their respective composites were measured. Neat resin specimens and unidirectional and crossply composite specimens were impact-tested with an instrumented drop-weight tester. Impact resistances of the specimens were assessed on the basis of loading capability, energy absorption, and extent of damage.

Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to investigate transparent thermoplastic polymer composites for enhanced low-velocity impact resistance and to systematically study mechanical properties, impact failure mechanism and capability of energy absorption for the polymer composites. In this study, thermoplastic particles, Polyamide 6 (PA6), used as filler materials within Polycarbonate (PC) or Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. All polymer composites were fabricated by a solution mixing method which was developed in this work. The morphology of the fracture surfaces of PC/PA6 and PMMA/PA6 composites were examined by using Scanning Electron Microscopy and optical microscopy. Tensile and flexural properties of PC/PA6 and PMMA/PA6 composites were investigated. Low-velocity impact properties were studied for PC/PA6 and PMMA/PA6 composites. Evaluation of low-velocity impact deformation after the penetration test was also discussed in this study. This study suggest that properly engineered transparent polymer composites could lead to significant low-velocity impact resistance without any compromise in terms of strength, Young's modulus and weight increase.
