Abstract: The present study aims to investigate whether online social support could function in the same way as the offline social support to protect our well-being from stress, and to examine how different Internet activities affected Hong Kong adolescents' online and offline social support, and their subsequent well-being.305 Hong Kong students from grade 10 and 11 participated in the present study. Descriptive statistics found that female adolescents had a higher level of perceived offline social support than male adolescents. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the buffering effect of both perceived offline and online social support on the relationship between stress and anxiety. Results found that perceived online social support could not buffer stress for Hong Kong adolescents. The buffering effect of perceived offline social support was only found in female adolescents. On the other hand, present results suggested that the actual impact of Internet depended on the types of Internet activities and their corresponding impact on offline and online social support. Implications on the importance of offline social support, gender difference on reactions towards social support and education on Internet usage were discussed. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, internet and phone technologies have introduced new ways to communicate. Substantial research has shown that social support can positively impact psychological well-being. However, few studies have explored the varying impacts of online and offline social support. This study measures how offline and online social support differentially influence psychological well-being. To do this, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) was adapted for both offline and online contexts. To validate these altered scales, the Social Support Questionnaire was administered to see how strongly the measures correlate. To measure well-being, the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-being was administered as well. Finally, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scale was administered to see if participants presented themselves in an overly positive light. Results confirmed the reliability and validity of both offline and online versions of the MSPSS. Both offline and online social support predicted increased well-being. There were no significant differences in online social support between online game players and those who spent little time playing online games. Those who spent less time playing online games with friends did not have any meaningful difference in offline support compared to those who spent more time playing games. Finally, online support was a slightly better predictor of well-being than offline support.

Book excerpt: Psychological Sense of Community (PSOC) consists of four components: membership, influence, integration and fulfillment of needs, and emotional connection (McMillan & Chavis, 1986) and is used to study relationships between individuals in a community (Sarason, 1974). Several psychosocial benefits have been found to be associated with a high level of PSOC, such as enhanced perceptions of social relationships and greater well-being. The Internet, especially social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter, has provided a new way for people to come together, potentially implying that community is shifting to a different platform. Previous research (Ganadharbatla, 2009; Ridings & Gefen, 2004) on SNS use has suggested benefits to users, such as social support, which buffers against stress and increased well-being (c.f., Cohen & wills, 1985). The present study compares experience of PSOC, social support, and well-being online versus in person in a diverse sample of Community College students (N=213). It then investigates the relationship between Facebook and Twitter use and PSOC, social support and well-being. There was no difference in reported PSOC or social support between Facebook users and SNS non-users, nor were there significant differences in overall well-being. However, Facebook users reported a greater PSOC and social support than Twitter users. These results suggest that SNS users experience a PSOC and social support in their in person lives equally as participants who do not participate in online social networking, suggesting the community is equally formed on these SNS.

Book excerpt: The escalating pressures put on the US healthcare system, due in part to the growing needs of the expanding older adult population, has motivated research dedicated to more fully understanding the mental health and mental well-being needs of this population and ways to address these needs and alleviate the pressure on the healthcare system. An increasing area of interest is in examining the role information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as Internet-connected computers and smartphones, in the health of older adults. Research has shown that ICTs can successfully be used to help treat, manage, and cope with mental health/well-being issues, but previous literature also finds that ICTs can contribute to mental health/well-being outcomes more directly. While studies have shown that ICTs may benefit older adults with regards to mental health/well-being, less is known through what mechanisms this relationship is enacted. This study uses data from the Health and Retirement Study to compare Internet-using older adults (aged 65+) with non-users on depression, life satisfaction, loneliness, personal growth, and purpose in life. Specific attention is given to examining the potential mediating roles of social integration (i.e., quantity of social ties) and social support (i.e., quality of social ties), as a Durkheimian perspective of Internet use argues that Internet use can be both beneficial and detrimental to an individual's social life, and changes in social life through Internet use can in turn affect mental health/well-being. Results of cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses finds Internet users, compared to iv non-users, typically enjoy more favorable mental health/well-being outcomes. Measures of social integration and social support are found to mediate the relationship between Internet use and mental health/well-being, but only partially. Additional analyses find that demographic characteristics, such as income and functional limitations, moderate the relationship between Internet use and mental health/well-being in older adults. The findings suggest that ICT interventions that incorporate elements that help older adults maintain social contacts and develop new ones may lessen mental health/well-being issues and the burdens associated with them.
