Colloidal synthesis employs solubilized chemical precursors to build materials from the bottom-up, providing an attractive method for generating nanoscale materials with extraordinary levels of control over material dimensions and morphology. In addition to the range of tunable synthetic parameters, colloidal syntheses offer solution dispersible nanoscale solids, which allows for convenient and high throughput liquid phase processing of the desired materials.Under the appropriate synthetic conditions, colloidally dispersed nanoparticle seeds can be used as structural foundations to nucleate and grow new material domains. Through this strategy, nanoparticles consisting of chemically distinct materials connected through solid state interfaces can be accessed. Dubbed hybrid nanoparticles, these materials constitute an expanding class of multi-component nanostructures that can exhibit multifunctionality as well as emergent phenomena not observed for the constituent materials independently. Moreover, these hybrids can adopt structures that expose multiple material domains to the surrounding media, allowing for additional synergies to be realized due to the distinct chemical surfaces arranged in close proximity. The unique features offered by these hierarchal nanostructures underpin, among many others, advanced applications in photovoltaics, biomedical theranostics, catalysis and chemical sensing.Although colloidal hybrid nanoparticles are attractive for a variety of applications, there are still significant hurdles that impair their widespread use. For example, the complex pathways that govern the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of these materials are not well understood, and accordingly, a robust synthetic framework for the modular design of hybrid structures from a diverse library of material combinations and connectivities has yet to be developed. In addition, current synthetic protocols for known colloidal hybrid architectures are nontrivial to execute, with run-to-run variability commonly observed among the product particle populations. For these reasons, studies that provide fundamental insights into colloidal reaction pathways, or offer robust strategies to access these materials in high quality, will enable key advancements in the future design and application of hybrid nanoparticle systems.In this dissertation, I present several contributions focusing on various aspects of inorganic colloidal nanoparticle chemistry. These contributions include chapters describing rigorous synthetic details as well as insights into the mechanistic pathways that govern the outcome of colloidal hybrid nanoparticle syntheses. Specifically, these studies center on the well known heterotrimer nanoparticle systems Ag-Pt-Fe3O4 and Au-Pt-Fe3O4, using them as model systems to provide generalizable insights into hybrid nanoparticle design and synthesis. In a subsequent chapter of this work, I describe new developments in the colloidal nanoparticle purification technique differential magnetic catch and release. This chapter demonstrates an alternative strategy to accessing predictable and high quality colloidal structures, by focusing on post synthetic purification rather than judicious synthetic control. Finally, an additional chapter of this dissertation describes a study investigating the selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes. These selective transformations typically require the application of complex nanoscale catalysts, which have complementary chemical surfaces in close proximity that are capable of cooperatively activating distinct reagent functionalities. The structural commonalities between heterostructured hybrid nanoparticles and these catalytic systems motivated us to investigate these transformations further and resulted in the unexpected discovery of bulk iron pyrite (FeS2) as an effective catalyst for these transformations.

Many optical techniques were developed to manipulate, assemble, and pattern nanomaterials, which have inspired numerous progress in various fields, such as microrobotics, bottom-up nanofabrication, nanomedicine, and microelectronics. With the entropically favorable photon-to-phonon conversion and tailorable opto-thermo-matter coupling, various thermal forces in the light-controlled temperature field can be harnessed to achieve the precise control of nanomaterials at a high spatial and temporal resolution. This Dissertation focuses on optothermal approaches for optical manipulation and structuring of functional nanomaterials and nanostructures on solid substrates for the development of on-chip devices. First, thermophoresis of colloidal species is exploited to optically trap various nanoparticles and biological objects. The assembly and printing of colloidal matter on the substrate from the suspension are demonstrated with the assistance of optothermally controlled depletion forces. Next, by optothermally modulating the nanomaterial-substrate interactions, versatile manipulation and assembly of nanomaterials on solid substrates can be achieved. Precise manipulation of nanomaterials, orbital rotation of nanomotors, and reconfigurable assembly of functional nanostructures on the solid substrate are demonstrated. Last, opto-thermoplasmonic nanolithography is developed for on-demand patterning of a variety of two-dimensional materials through plasmon-enhanced thermal oxidation and sublimation. It is anticipated that the studies presented here provide an ideal platform for studying colloidal science, materials science, and nanophotonics, and the optothermally architected nanomaterials and nanostructures are expected to stimulate more advances in a broad range of fields

These could be converted into a great source of energy if using the proper technology. Thermoelectric devices are environmentally friendly solid-state harvesters able to play this role by converting temperature differences into an electric voltage and vice-versa. These devices, besides being highly reliable since they have no moving parts, if engineered and fabricated in a shape-adaptable manner, are able to fit in countless industrial or domestic applications to improve their efficiency or power low-consumption devices like sensors. If, on top of it, the whole fabrication process is cost-effective and easily scalable, the outcoming thermoelectric devices could potentially reach numerous markets banned to date due to a mix of low efficiencies and high prices of the currently existing solutions. The first milestone towards cost-effective thermoelectric devices relies on the improvement of the thermoelectric conversion efficiency of the constituents materials. However, such improvement cannot be at all costs. New materials with significant improved performance need to be designed and engineered with relatively low production cost. In this framework, solution-processed techniques are an outstanding alternative for the production of thermoelectric materials and devices. In particular, the bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanoparticles, with controlled size, shape, crystal phase and composition, has no competing technology to precisely design functional metamaterials without the need of a high capital equipment or complex procedures, not only for thermoelectrics, but also for a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, some limitations still need to be overcome to exploit the full potential of solution-processed assembly technologies, and two different challenges should be addressed. The first one is regarding materials efficiency enhancement, and the second one to the device development itself. In this work, we undertake a journey from the material development to the engineering of the final device. The thesis is structured in 5 chapters, starting from the Chapter 0 or General Introduction that intends to situate the reader into the broader context of the technology and present the main objectives of the work. Chapter 1 presents a general view of the solution-processed route for the development of bottom-up engineered nanoparticle-based thermoelectric nanomaterials and devices. It is an extended and comprehensive text where main concepts, challenges, advantages and opportunities that the technology offers are exposed. Chapter 2 is built around 3 publications that cover the three different steps of the solution-processed nanomaterials preparation, and how the efficiency can be enhanced within each one. First article is focused on the synthesis stage, and presents the production of core-shell nanoparticles as a way to design nanocomposites. The second one is related to the purification step, showing how, taking advantage of the nanoparticle surface, an HCl-mediated ligand displacement is able to introduce controlled amounts of dopants in the nanoparticle. Last one, is focused on the final assembly phase, in which by properly assembling two different kinds of nanoparticles, a semiconductor and a metal, the efficiency could be greatly enhanced. In Chapter 3 a step is made towards the production of a ring-shape device, taking PbSe as a model material. These results have been submitted for their publication. Chapter 4, presents the integration of a thermoelectric device together with a nanoparticle-based temperature sensor. This integrated assembly, including an ultra-low-power electronic management, was implemented as an autonomous soil moisture sensor, and shows the great opportunity that both solution-processed techniques and thermoelectrics technology offer for the development of new applications. There are three cornerstones to the expectation that Nanotechnology will yield revolutionary advances in understanding and application: • Breakthroughs in properties that arise from materials fabricated from the nanoscale. • Synergistic behavior that arise from the combination of disparate types of materials (soft vs. hard, organic vs. inorganic, chemical vs. biological vs. solid state) at the nanoscale. • Exploitation of natural (e.g. chemical and biological) assembly mechanisms that can accomplish structural control at the nanoscale. It is expected that this will lead to paradigms for assembling bio-inspired functional systems that accomplish desirable properties that are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive using top-down approaches.
