Book Synopsis Physics of Biological Membranes by : Patricia Bassereau
Download or read book Physics of Biological Membranes written by Patricia Bassereau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly focuses on key aspects of biomembranes that have emerged over the past 15 years. It covers static and dynamic descriptions, as well as modeling for membrane organization and shape at the local and global (at the cell level) scale. It also discusses several new developments in non-equilibrium aspects that have not yet been covered elsewhere. Biological membranes are the seat of interactions between cells and the rest of the world, and internally, they are at the core of complex dynamic reorganizations and chemical reactions. Despite the long tradition of membrane research in biophysics, the physics of cell membranes as well as of biomimetic or synthetic membranes is a rapidly developing field. Though successful books have already been published on this topic over the past decades, none include the most recent advances. Additionally, in this domain, the traditional distinction between biological and physical approaches tends to blur. This book gathers the most recent advances in this area, and will benefit biologists and physicists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Biomembranes and Lipid Self-Assembly, Volume 28, formerly titled Advances in Planar Lipid Bilayers and Liposomes, provides a global platform for the study of cell membranes, lipid model membranes, and lipid self-assemblies, from the micro- to the nanoscale. Planar lipid bilayers are widely studied due to their ubiquity in nature. This book presents research on their application in the formulation of biomimetic model membranes, and in the design of artificial dispersion of liposomes. Moreover, the book discusses how lipids self-assemble into a wide range of other structures, including micelles and the liquid crystalline hexagonal and cubic phases. Chapters in this volume present both original research and comprehensive reviews written by world leading experts and young researchers. Surveys recent theoretical and experimental results on lipid micro- and nanostructures Presents potential uses applications, such as clinically relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, biotechnology, pharmaceutical engineering and food products Includes both original research and comprehensive reviews written by world leading experts and young researchers Provides a global platform for a broad community of experimental and theoretical researchers studying cell membranes, lipid model membranes, and lipid self-assemblies, from the micro- to the nanoscale
Download or read book Biomembranes written by Robert B. Gennis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New textbooks at all levels of chemistry appear with great regularity. Some fields like basic biochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and chemical thermody namics are well represented by many excellent texts, and new or revised editions are published sufficiently often to keep up with progress in research. However, some areas of chemistry, especially many of those taught at the graduate level, suffer from a real lack of up-to-date textbooks. The most serious needs occur in fields that are rapidly changing. Textbooks in these subjects usually have to be written by scientists actually involved in the research which is advancing the field. It is not often easy to persuade such individuals to set time aside to help spread the knowledge they have accumulated. Our goal, in this series, is to pinpoint areas of chemistry where recent progress has outpaced what is covered in any available textbooks, and then seek out and persuade experts in these fields to produce relatively concise but instructive introductions to their fields. These should serve the needs of one semester or one quarter graduate courses in chemistry and biochemistry. In some cases, the availability of texts in active research areas should help stimulate the creation of new courses.
Book Synopsis Biophysical Approaches for the Study of Membrane Structure Part A by :
Download or read book Biophysical Approaches for the Study of Membrane Structure Part A written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-07-05 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biophysical Approaches for the Study of Membrane Structure, Part A, Volume 700 explores lipid membrane asymmetry and lateral heterogeneity. A burst of recent research has shown that bilayers whose leaflets differ in their physical properties—such as composition, phase state, or lateral stress—exhibit many fascinating new characteristics, but also pose a host of new challenges related to their creation, characterization, simulation, and theoretical description. Chapters in this new release include Evaluation of functional transbilayer coupling in live cells by controlled lipid exchange and imaging FCS, Effects of lateral and hydrostatic pressure on membrane structure and properties, and much more. Other sections cover Using the yeast vacuole as a system to test the lipid drivers of membrane heterogeneity in living cells, Direct quantification of cellular membrane lipids using ratiometric fluorescence sensors, The spectral phasor approach to resolving membrane order with environmentally sensitive dyes, The use of hemifusion to create asymmetric giant unilamellar vesicles: Insights on induced order domains, Advanced microscopy methods to study membrane pores, Use of cryo-EM to study membrane phase separation, and much more. Explore the state-of-the-art of lipid membrane asymmetry Covers experimental, theoretical, and computational techniques to create and characterize asymmetric lipid membranes Teaches how these kinds of approaches create and characterize laterally inhomogeneous membranes
Book Synopsis Mesoscale Chemistry by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mesoscale Chemistry written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades great strides have been made in chemistry at the nanoscale, where the atomic granularity of matter and the exact positions of individual atoms are key determinants of structure and dynamics. Less attention, however, has been paid to the mesoscale-it is at this scale, in the range extending from large molecules (10 nm) through viruses to eukaryotic cells (10 microns), where interesting ensemble effects and the functionality that is critical to macroscopic phenomenon begins to manifest itself and cannot be described by laws on the scale of atoms and molecules alone. To further explore how knowledge about mesoscale phenomena can impact chemical research and development activities and vice versa, the Chemical Sciences Roundtable of the National Research Council convened a workshop on mesoscale chemistry in November 2014. With a focus on the research on chemical phenomena at the mesoscale, participants examined the opportunities that utilizing those behaviors can have for developing new catalysts, adding new functionality to materials, and increasing our understanding of biological and interfacial systems. The workshop also highlighted some of the challenges for analysis and description of mesoscale structures. This report summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book Synopsis Study of Bacteriorhodopsin in a Controlled Lipid Environment by : Vivien Yeh
Download or read book Study of Bacteriorhodopsin in a Controlled Lipid Environment written by Vivien Yeh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of how the properties of nanodiscs, such as lipid composition and size, influence the function of the embedding integral membrane protein, bacteriorhodopsin. The author performed systematic studies to show that the lipid composition and the charge of the hydrophobic head and the structure of hydrophilic tails affect the photocycle pathway of bacteriorhodopsin, which is closely associated with its proton-pumping activity. Furthermore, the author demonstrated a highly efficient method for extracting membrane proteins directly from the biological membrane, preserving protein conformation, function and essential native lipids. This book demonstrates optimization and sample preparation, and presents practical methods of preparing membrane protein-embedded nanodisc samples for biophysical studies, which benefit structural and functional studies in the field of membrane protein characterization, both.
