Book excerpt: In the latest installment of the Full Figured series, Monica Walters and Treasure Hernandez introduce readers to two full-figured beauties who are as different as night and day. One is a good girl who’s swept off her feet with an unexpected romance. The other is a vivacious diva looking for a sexy adventure. Love Won’t Let Me Wait by Monica Walters: Giánni’s past is riddled with failed relationships and broken hearts, so she has chosen to focus on her self-worth instead. However, when she finds herself just going through the motions in her job, she feels the need for some entertainment. A new customer’s flirtatious advances might just offer her a new way to occupy her downtime. When Ford decided to skip out on a four-year degree to become a truck driver, his parents were sorely disappointed, but Ford believes there is potential in trucking, so he isn’t giving up on his dream. When he heads to a local bank for financial assistance, he isn’t prepared for the curveball life throws at him. This ball of curves is professional, fiery, and gorgeous, and Ford is determined to make her his no matter the cost. Giánni isn’t prepared for what having Ford in her life can lead to, and she’s taken aback by how fast it progresses. Will Ford be able to convince her that he can meet her exactly where she is, or will his aggressive attempts at loving her prove to be too much for her to handle? Plus One by Treasure Hernandez: In Bae’s world, there’s only room for one voluptuous, sexy diva. Well, at least in her circle of friends, anyway. Then her friend Giselle brings a “plus one” to Bae’s book release party and invites her on their all-girl getaway to Saint Martin. Bae might think there’s no room for another thick and curvy member in her clique, but does the same go for her bed? Five vivacious women go on an all-expenses-paid luxury vacation in the Caribbean. It’s a trip full of sisterhood, shenanigans, and plenty of full-figured sexiness. Open your mind and throw caution to the wind as you experience one of the most memorable Full-Figured tales yet.

Book excerpt: The essays in Racialized Politics of Desire in Personal Ads explore complex intersections among the social categories of race, gender and sexuality within personal ads, revealing a dynamic tapestry of power relations and hierarchies. The ephemeral nature of personal ads, their anonymity, the space limitations, and the linguistic encoding characteristic of the genre make it an interesting and important opportunity to witness the performative nature of identity politics.

Book excerpt: Each volume of the Dictionary of World Biography contains 250 entries on the lives of the individuals who shaped their times and left their mark on world history. This is not a who's who. Instead, each entry provides an in-depth essay on the life and career of the individual concerned. Essays commence with a quick reference section that provides basic facts on the individual's life and achievements. The extended biography places the life and works of the individual within an historical context, and the summary at the end of each essay provides a synopsis of the individual's place in history. All entries conclude with a fully annotated bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a broad cultural region with related traditions of mythical beliefs interconnected by long-term contacts during prehistoric times. This area - called here the "Mythological Crescent" - is a zone of cultural convergence that extends from the ancient Middle East via Anatolia to southeastern Europe, opening into the wide cultural landscape of Eurasia. The very old interconnections between Eurasia and Anatolia are explored in this study for the first time. In a comparative view, striking similarities can be reconstructed for the ancient belief systems and the imagery of both regions which suggest convergent cosmological conceptualizations of high age. The beliefs and ritual practices of the indigenous peoples of Eurasia are rooted in the shamanism of the oldest cultural layers of the Palaeolithic. Although socioeconomic development in Anatolia was markedly different from cultural evolution in Eurasia, the hunters and gatherers in Anatolia who adopted sedentary lifeways did not entirely lose their ancient beliefs during the transition to plant cultivation (in the eighth millennium BCE). Archaic beliefs and imagery fused with new practices and innovations during the development of agrarian societies. One diagnostic motif which was perpetuated from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic and beyond is represented by the production of female figurines (statuettes). Their significance for communal life has been linked to spiritual concepts of the continuity of life, the vegetation cycle, and the protection of the natural habitat of all living things as recorded in myths and historical folk art of Uralic and other peoples. The bear plays a significant role as a mythical animal in the imagery of Eurasia whereas this motif was lost in Anatolia during the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: A socialite and a cautious introvert try to make a love connection, but their differences might be more than they can overcome. Kinisha Jordan has always been a socialite, treating society like her personal revolving door. She doesn’t dwell on people that have no place in her life. She simply moves on, trying her best not to let it affect her. However, seeing her friends find happiness and love is starting to weigh on her. Lonely nights are beginning to take a toll on her, and she finds herself in an undesirable predicament. Things spiral out of control, and she starts to regret her past choices, wondering if she has been too free with her time. Oliver Andrews has played it safe in life, refusing to take chances in any aspect of it. He learned to watch the experiences of others before deciding to live carelessly. He waits patiently for the attention of one woman. Playing the field has never been a part of who he is, and he refuses to reduce his standards simply because he’s lonely. When a situation arises, despite his morals, he decides to step in and save the day. Kinisha needs help, and it ends up coming from the least likely source. Oliver has offered her a way out, but she doesn’t know if she can agree to his terms. While the attraction is there, the statutes put in place might be too much for her to abide by. Will Oliver ease the stipulations he’s put in place to obtain Kinisha’s heart, or will Kinisha change who she is to satisfy Oliver’s demands?

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Carl Weber has tantalized us with his provocative and sexy plus size characters in Something on the Side, Big Girls Do Cry and Torn Between Two Lovers. Now Weber has taken on the role of not just writer but mentor and editor with his highly successful Full Figured series. In this installment, Weber pens his own story, bringing back a familiar and well-liked character, the voluptuous bad girl Coco Brown, who is once again looking for love in all the wrong places. Urban Books author Ms. Michel Moore introduces us to Tami, another plus-size bad girl, in “This Can’t Be Life.” Often judged by her weight and not the size of her heart, Tami wants the same type of devoted love her younger, but much smaller in size, sister Tori has with her spouse. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem meant to be, until a “mysterious” accident brings her and her brother-in-law closer than ever. While Tori fights to live, Tami fights for the newfound love of her life—her sister’s husband.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2022, it was reported that plus-sizes accounted for nearly twenty percent of all women's apparel sales in the United States and was one of the industry's few growth sectors. For many, this news seemed to herald a remarkably inclusive turn for an industry that long bartered in exclusivity. Yet the recent success of plus-size fashion obscures a rather complicated history–one that can be traced back over a century, and which illuminates the fraught relationship between fashion, fat, and weight bias in American culture. Although many regard fat as a malady of the present, in the early twentieth century it was estimated that more than one-third of American women classified as “overweight.” While modern weight bias had yet to fully cement itself in the American imaginary, the limitations of mass garment manufacturing coupled with the ascendent slender beauty ideal had already relegated larger women to fashion's peripheries. By 1915, however, fashion forecasters predicted that so-called “stoutwear” was well positioned to become one of the most lucrative subsectors of the burgeoning ready-to-wear trade. In the years that followed, stoutwear manufacturers set out to create more space for the fat woman in fashion but, in doing so, revealed an ancillary motivation: that of how to design fat out of existence altogether. Fashion Before Plus-Size considers what came “before” plus-size fashion while also shedding new light on the ways that the fashion industry not only perpetuates but produces weight bias. By situating stoutwear at the confluence of mass manufacturing, beauty ideals, standardized sizing, health discourse, and consumer culture, this book exposes the flawed foundations upon which the contemporary plus-size fashion industry has been built.
