Eine charismatische Führungskraft besäße ein angeborenes, ‚magisches‘ und außeralltägliches Persönlichkeitsmerkmal, dass dazu berufen ist, bestehende Ordnungen von innen heraus umzuformen und neu zu orientieren. Dem gegenüber steht die neocharismatische Führungskraft, die sich durch ein spezifisches und erlernbares Führungsverhalten mit verschiedenen Ausprägungsmöglichkeiten auszeichnet und durch die Geführten wahrgenommen wird. Egal, ob im politischen, sozialen, wirtschaftlichen oder technologischen Leben, keiner dieser Bereiche ist von den ständigen gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen ausgenommen. Durch den sozialen Wandel von Gesellschaft werden die benannten Bereiche beispielsweise durch fortlaufende Restrukturierungen, Fusionen und Arbeitsplatzverlusten geprägt – kurzum, die arbeitende Bevölkerung wird mit zunehmenden Flexibilitätsanforderungen und höheren Geschwindigkeitsabläufen konfrontiert. Der Wandel ist ein zeitabhängiges Phänomen, welches sich entweder schnell oder „fast heimlich“ über einen längeren Zeitraum erstreckt. Wir stehen also vor zwei Möglichkeiten: Entweder wir bewältigen den Wandel durch unsere Gestaltungs- und Denkstrukturen oder der Wandel wird uns lenken. Um einen geeigneten Umgang und Bewältigungsstrategien finden zu können, müssen entsprechende Notwendigkeiten für die potentiellen Veränderungen erkannt, zukünftige Entwicklungen erdacht, Handlungsspielräume eröffnet und Lösungsansätze evaluiert und umgesetzt werden. Dabei stellt sich die Frage wie (Bildungs-)Organisationen in Zeiten des gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Wandels mit den auf sie zukommenden Veränderungen umgehen sollen und können. Damit die wandelnden Situationen bewältigt werden können, müssen (Bildungs-)Organisationen als ganze Einheit lernen, um neue Verhaltens- und Denkweisen erarbeiten zu können. Dieser Lösungsansatz wird unter dem Konzept des ‚organisationalen Lernens‘ gefasst. Über das organisationale Lernen werden im Grunde Prozesse der Wissenserweiterung, Umweltanpassung, Leistungsverbesserung und der internen Optimierung in Organisationen beschrieben.
