Seitdem Menschen in Gruppen zusammenleben, gibt es führende Personen und diese, die geführt werden. Diskutiert und kritisiert werden seit den 1950er Jahren auch die vielen verschiedenen Führungsstile. Es stellt sich die Frage welcher Stil für die Führung von Menschen am effizientesten bzw. der „richtige“ Stil sei. Für ein Unternehmen ist von großer Bedeutung mit welchem Verhalten ihre Führungskräfte die Mitarbeiter zu bestmöglichen Leistungen beeinflussen bzw. motivieren können und somit die Unternehmensziele erreichen. Empirische Untersuchungen zeigen, dass der Führungsstil einen großen Einfluss auf die Arbeit und das Wohlbefinden von Führenden und Mitarbeitern und somit auch auf den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg des Unternehmens hat. Jedoch gibt es nicht den einen optimalen Führungsstil wie bereits einige Untersuchungen und Publikationen bewiesen haben. Jeder der Stile kann sowohl positive als auch negative Ergebnisse erzielen, abhängig von der Situation und der einzelnen Mitarbeiter. Die Führungsstile sollten situativ angepasst werden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden nach einer Definition der Begriffe Führung und Führungsstil zum einen die klassischen Führungsstile und zum anderen der transaktionale und der transformale Führungsstil erläutert und miteinander verglichen. Mögliche Vor- und Nachteile sowie deren Einfluss auf die Mitarbeitermotivation, die Leistungsbereitschaft und den Führungserfolg werden aufgezeigt. Darüber hinaus sollen Ergebnisse aktueller Studien einen Einblick in den Forschungsstand liefern. Abschließend werden die wichtigsten Punkte zusammengefasst und anhand der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse ein abschließendes Fazit gezogen.

We see no evidence of fewer face-to-face coaching or mentoring relationships—on the contrary, they continue to become more popular and widespread. Rather, we see that virtual coaching and mentoring both enrich predominantly face-to-face relationships, by connecting partners at times between formal meetings, and open up coaching and mentoring to new audiences and new applications.
