Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation and exchange of knowledge plays a prominent role in Mediterranean and European cultural and religious history. Relations between master and disciples and between teachers and students are especially significant in this context. This volume - with contributions from the disciplines of classical studies, Arabic studies, Jewish studies, theology, religious science, educational science, psychology, and literary and cultural studies - offers a selection of possible perspectives and approaches to this topic. It presents roles, models and concepts of master/follower relationships within different religions, religious or para-religious movements and communities and their milieus as well as intellectual forms of association from Ancient Greece to the present day. The contributions deal for example with terminologies and narratives, teaching and leadership concepts, forms of presentation of the self and others, strategies in the construction of authority and the different effects of charisma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinarity has been a defining feature of Interpreting Studies from its inception. The present volume comprises a selection of papers by authors from five different European countries; the papers explore the crossroads of various subdisciplines within Interpreting Studies and beyond. The contributions show that, while traditional approaches and combinations with other established disciplines such as sociology, law or linguistics remain common, advances in technology, in particular rapid software development, require that Interpreting Studies must also adapt to and accept a new social reality. Using examples from a range of institutional settings, the authors demonstrate what the effect of these changes has been and will be on the theory, teaching and practice of interpreting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely used for many years by both students, scientists and other specialists, as well as translators, the two-volume German-English / English-German Dictionary of Psychology and Psychiatry is the most exhaustive bilingual compilation of terminology in these fields available. In this brand new edition, the Dictionary of Psychology and Psychiatry has been fully revised and updated, and substantially expanded by the addition of new entries. For instance, all the terms and vocabulary from the field of psychiatry has been carefully reviewed and brought up to date by inclusion of the terminology used in DSM-IV and ICD-10, as well as numerous other entries from this evolving area. The increasing standardization of scientific terminology in psychiatry has thus been taken account of in the new edition. Overall, around 4,000 terms from the fields of psychology and psychiatry have been added in this new edition, bringing the total to around 35,000 in each language. In addition to numerous words and terms from psychology and psychiatry in general that have been added, particular importance was also placed on including new terminology from the areas of biological psychology, personality psychology, methodology, and computer-based assessment, as well of course as relevant terms from fields such as computing and the internet. At the same time, corrections and changes of usage since the previous edition have been included, and some terms that have in the meanwhile become obsolete have been removed. The new German spelling and orthography is used throughout.

These are particularly useful heuristic tools when examining border regions where social and geopolitical demarcations diverge. Applying this approach, the authors of this volume investigate spatial and identity constructions in cross-border contexts as they appear in everyday, institutional and media practices. The results are discussed with a keen eye for obliquely aligned spaces and identities and relinked to governmental issues of normalization and subjectivation. The studies base upon empirical surveys conducted in Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Lead without Domineering: 29 Smart Leadership Rules is a kind of tool book which contains almost 30 suggestions for self-reflection of leaders in any kind of leading situation – on the job, in a honorary post, or in any other context. Leaders reach their own limits and the limits of others, but how can they overcome these limits? What is characteristic for a good leader and how is it possible to achieve one’s objectives in cooperation with others? Clever and wise leaders support contexts, form relationships, and promote spirit by consolidating the momentum or dynamic of groups, teams, and organizations. Clever leaders rarely use commands or lay down the law, even though instruments of power and their handling are not unknown to them. Clever leadership implies taking risks, as leaders who adopt the principles of this book give up one-dimensional arguing and if-then-logic statements. Professor Dr. Rolf Arnold presents different tools for clever and effective leadership, and he shows how the typical challenges for a leader in the nowadays world can be met. His book is based on recent scientific findings in the field of leadership research and on almost thirty years of practical experience as a leader, supervisor, and coach within different fields and organizations worldwide.

-------- The exegesis of De Josepho and De Somniis II intended in this work read the two portrayals of Joseph as Philo’s contribution to the discourse on government. The ambivalent tendencies in the Joseph figure form the point of departure for Philo in using it for examining structures of tyrannical and ideal rule. Philo’s knowledge of Greek-Hellenistic philosophy and his understanding of the Torah enables him to reflect upon the political character on different levels. Thus the tension between both treatises can be interpreted as a conscious portrayal of effective and of tyrannical rule. At the same time Philo develops a concept of government out of the ambivalences of the Joseph figure, which, on the basis of the understanding of the Torah, liberates political action from dependencies and points out universal guidelines for action and the authorities responsible for control of them.
