Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte sind die Themen: Führung allgemein, Macht und Einfluss, Motivation, Gespräche mit Mitarbeitern, die Führung einer Gruppe, das Führen der eigenen Person und zum Schluss das Führungskonzept. Allerdings wird kein Konzept vorgestellt, vielmehr soll sich eine angehende Führungskraft ihr Konzept selber entwickeln. Zu jedem Kapitel werden theoretische Überlegungen und Forschungsergebnisse vorgestellt. Als Hilfestellung für den Alltag bietet das Buch viele Beispiele oder auch Antworten zu Fragen von angehenden oder frisch ernannten Führungskräften, die verrieten, was sie zu Beginn Ihrer Zeit in der neuen Rolle bewegte. Die Beispiele sind fiktive Geschichten oder Aufzeichnungen anderer Menschen, die der Autorin für Interviews zur Verfügung standen.

In particular, the author draws on a practice lens and complexity leadership theory in explaining how communities of practice generate new resources (i.e., adaptability), produce and reproduce broader socio-cultural structures, and are enabled as well as influenced by formal leadership.
