Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuel Wood Used in the United States, 1630-1930 As shown in table 4, about 70 percent of the estimated lumber in fuel was hardwood. This suggests an interesting contrast with the lumber-industry data, in which the aggregate cut from 1800 to 1935 had a hardwood component Of only 23 percent. Thus, on the basis of national averages, the fuel cut supplemented the lumber cut in the utilization of mixed forests. Each required principally what the other did not want. That happy condition did not exist in all regions. In the West far more and better hardwood would have been burned had it been available. The Central and Middle Atlantic regions, however, found it expedient not only to destroy much of the original hardwood on their agricultural lands, but to ship in scores of billions of feet of softwoods in the form of lumber. Book Synopsis The Story of a Forest by : Robert Kuhn McGregor
Download or read book The Story of a Forest written by Robert Kuhn McGregor and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The re-established forests of the Upper Delaware exist as a living reminder of centuries of both exploitation and good intentions. Emerging after the last glaciation, they were first modified by Native Americans to promote hunting and limited agriculture. The forests began to disappear as Europeans clear-cut farmland and fed sawmills and tanneries. The advent of the railroad accelerated demand and within 30 years industry had consumed virtually every mature tree in the valley, leaving barren hillsides subject to erosion and flooding. Even as unchecked cutting continued, conservation efforts began to save what little remained. A century and a half later, a forest for the 21st century has emerged--an ecological patchwork protected by a web of governmental agencies, yet still subject to danger from humans.
Book Synopsis Ecology and Empire by : Tom Griffiths
Download or read book Ecology and Empire written by Tom Griffiths and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology and Empire forged a historical partnership of great power -- and one which, particularly in the last 500 years, radically changed human and natural history across the globe. This book scrutinizes European expansion from the perspectives of the so-called colonized peripheries, the settler societies. It begins with Australia as a prism through which to consider the relations between settlers and their lands, but moves well beyond this to a range of lands of empire. It uses their distinctive ecologies and histories to shed new light on both the imperial and the settler environmental experience. Ecology and Empire also explores the way in which the science of ecology itself was an artifact of empire, drawing together the fields of imperial history and the history of science.
