Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change, urban air quality, and dependency on crude oil are important societal challenges. In the transportation sector especially, clean and energy efficient technologies must be developed. Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have gained a growing interest in the vehicle industry. Nowadays, the commercialization of EVs and PHEVs has been possible in different applications (i.e., light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty vehicles) thanks to the advances in energy storage systems, power electronics converters (including DC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, and battery charging systems), electric machines, and energy efficient power flow control strategies. This book is based on the Special Issue of the journal Applied Sciences on “Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)”. This collection of research articles includes topics such as novel propulsion systems, emerging power electronics and their control algorithms, emerging electric machines and control techniques, energy storage systems, including BMS, and efficient energy management strategies for hybrid propulsion, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H), grid-to-vehicle (G2V) technologies, and wireless power transfer (WPT) systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling Applications in the Airline Industry explains the different functions and tactics performed by airlines during their planning and operation phases. Each function receives a full explanation of the challenges it brings and a solution methodology is presented, supported by numerical illustrative examples wherever possible. The book also highlights the main limitations of current practice and provides a brief description of future work related to each function. The authors have filtered the rich literature of airline management to include only the research that has actually been adopted by the airlines, giving a genuinely accurate representation of real airline management and its continuing development of solution methodologies. The book consists of 20 chapters divided into 4 sections: - Demand Modeling and Forecasting - Scheduling of Resources - Revenue Management - Irregular Operations Management. The book will be a valuable source or a handbook for individuals seeking a career in airline management. Written by experts with significant working experience within the industry, it offers readers insights to the real practice of operations modelling. In particular the book makes accessible the complexities of the key airline functions and explains the interrelation between them.

Book excerpt: The editors are happy to present the twentieth volume in the review series Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology. Lahey and Drew, our first authors, present a concise development of the equations for two-phase flow, essential to the understanding of normal and, even more, accidental behavior in water-cooled reactors. The commitment to the PWR in Europe (now joined by England in this respect) and the aftermath of Chernobyl in the U.S.S.R. put continuing emphasis on the need for good understanding of two-phase phenomena to provide good modelling. The second review, by Downar and Sesonske, of light water reactor fuel modelling, follows this LWR interest and emphasises a current major economic interest: how to get the most out of fuel. Recollecting that the capital cost of nuclear power is high, it is easy to overlook the fact that in the lifetime of a plant as much money is spent on fuel as capital. Optimization is worthwhile. The U.S. scene still does not practice recycling whereas the European scene does. Now that the United Kingdom is building its first (commercial) light water reactor, the linear modelling of burnup exploited by the second authors will prove even more useful, although previously exploited for advanced gas-cooled reactors. If the U.K. is behind in this respect, the recycling undertaken by France and England has led to trial use of plutonium in thermal reactors but, even more, the availability of plutonium for fast reactors.

Book excerpt: Global CO2 emissions regulations, in conjunction with increasing customer demands are requiring significant improvements in vehicle energy (or fuel) efficiency. In this drive to reduce fuel consumption, improvements in the powertrain (or propulsion system) continue to be a major area of focus, particularly shifting to higher levels of electrification. A next step in the evolution of improving fuel efficiency is to have the propulsion system controller make use of vehicle-level information. In this context, Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technologies offer the potential for enhancing the vehicle fuel efficiency as well as improving vehicle safety and comfort by leveraging information from advanced mapping and location, and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication. The focus of this thesis is to develop Dynamic Programming (DP) and Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) based approaches that combine the energy-saving potentials of powertrain electrification and CAV technologies, and further compound them. In this work, an ADP-based scheme is used to jointly optimize the vehicle velocity and energy management strategy of an electrified CAV over real-world driving routes. This predictive controls framework uses preview information from the route and environment to achieve significant fuel efficiency improvements even in the presence of variabilities (such as driver aggressiveness and varying traffic signal information). The controller was then implemented and tested in a demonstration vehicle at a proving ground facility over reconstructed route scenarios. Further, this thesis explores approaches to reducing the computational complexity of optimization methods based on Dynamic Programming, which can restrict its use in many real-time applications. To this end, two sub-optimal methodologies are proposed. One of them, the integrated DP-ECMS (Dynamic Programming-Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy) method embeds a heuristic strategy within the DP framework. In doing so, the resulting implementation is only marginally sub-optimal compared to the (original) DP, while mitigating the curse of dimensionality. The second method proposed to reduce computation time is the WASP (Warm Start Dynamic Programming) algorithm. Specifically, the solution to a perturbed receding horizon optimal control problem was computed in an approximately optimal manner, by making use of the value function and other properties of the original (unperturbed) DP solution. Its efficacy is demonstrated through application in simplified dynamic optimization problems.
