Book excerpt: A deeper understanding of flame stabilization and extinguishing mechanisms is necessary in developing the next generation of flame suppressants. In order to understand the effects of inert gases on coflow diffusion flames, a 28-mm diameter cup burner was used to generate methane and propane coflow diffusion flames. The measured minimum extinguishing concentration of N2 added to the coflow air was 28.5 +/- 0.05 % and 34.0 +/- 0.07 % for methane and propane, respectively, and those for CO2 were 17.2 +/- 0.12 % and 22.4 +/- 0.06 %, respectively. Silica-coated, 50-um R-type thermocouples were used to measure temperature in the flames as N2 or CO2 was added to the coflow air. Thin filament pyrometry technique using a 15-um SiC fiber was also applied in an attempt to measure the temperature of the inert gas-added flames. For calibrations of the temperature measurements, a 25.4-mm x 25.4-mm Hencken burner was used to produce a near-adiabatic initially unmixed methane flame. In addition to the thermal flame structure measurements, the stability limits of laminar jet diffusion flames were measured for various fuels (methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene propane, butane, and 1-butene) to further elaborate the effects of flow velocities on diffusion flame stabilization and extinguishing mechanisms. Through these experimental techniques, the temperature effects of inert gases on coflow diffusion flames were observed and factors leading to instability in laminar jet diffusion flames were identified.

The main component of the delivery system is a glass elutriation vessel containing a bed of powder. The extinction experiments were conducted in counterflow flame geometry. A flat, laminar diffusion flame was produced in a stagnation-point boundary layer by directing an oxidizing gas stream downward onto the surface of a liquid fuel burning at atmospheric pressure. The extinction data can be used to extract overall activation energies and prefactors for the inhibition processes in one-step reaction rate approximations, perhaps ultimately leading to conclusions regarding chemical mechanisms for powder suppression.

Book excerpt: "The continued combustion of fossil fuels to fulfill global energy demand is being questioned because of the well-known problem of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, which introduces new carbon, in the form of carbon dioxide, into the environment causing climate change. However, the inherent advantages of combustion-based engines, e.g., energy and power densities, make it hard for other power systems to compete; hence, a leading strategy is to avoid burning fossil fuels by using alternative renewable fuels, such as hydrogen and renewable biofuels. Adaptability with alternative renewable fuels that have variable compositions is referred to as fuel flexibility, which is an important parameter of next-generation combustor design. However, fuel flexibility significantly affects combustor operability properties, such as blowout, flashback, and dynamic stability, mainly due to variations in turbulent burning rates. Changing the fuel and oxidizing-gas mixture composition affects flame characteristics and burning rates through changing: (1) mixture reactivity, which is represented by unstretched laminar flame speed, and (2) mixture diffusivity, i.e., the diffusivity of the deficient reactant and diffusivity of heat. The disparity between thermal and mass diffusivities at the flame front is known as "differential diffusion", which causes stretch sensitivity, and thermal-diffusive instabilities, in flame-front propagation, and is represented by Lewis number, a ratio of thermal-to-mass diffusivities.This thesis investigates the effects of differential diffusion and stretch sensitivity on propagation, stabilization, and structure of lean turbulent premixed flames in the thin reaction zone regime. In the context of fuel flexibility, various fuels and oxidizer-inert mixtures are used to form mixtures with distinct effective Lewis numbers, through changing both fuel diffusivity and thermal diffusivity of the mixture. In these experiments, the unstretched laminar flame speed is kept constant during mixture dilution, and hydrogen enrichment of hydrocarbon flames, through changing the mixture equivalence ratio, in order to minimize the effects of chemistry. Furthermore, bulk-flow properties and the temperature boundary condition are kept constant; hence, the study highlights the effects of differential diffusion. The experiments are carried out using strained counter-flow flames, in order to study the effects of both components of the flame stretch, i.e., hydrodynamic strain and curvature. Local instantaneous statistics of various flame parameters within the imaged plane are quantified using high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) and Mie scattering flame tomography at various levels of turbulence intensity. These statistics include flame location, flame velocity, and flame-front topology, such as flame stretch, flame-front curvature, and flame surface area.The statistics of various parameters of turbulent flames with distinct effective Lewis number show that the effects of differential diffusion on the burning rates and the structure of turbulent premixed flames are important in highly turbulent flames in the thin reaction zone of combustion. Furthermore, these results are not dependent on the fuel or oxidizing-gas mixture and can be described fully by the effective Lewis number and turbulence intensity. In addition, at constant turbulence intensities, differential diffusion increases the burning rate of turbulent flames in thermo-diffusively unstable mixtures through two main mechanisms: (1) increasing the local flamelet displacement velocity, and (2) increasing the flame surface area. This thesis shows the need to advance the combustion theory to produce models that can capture the effects of differential diffusion for flames in real-world combustion systems, in order to predict the performance of future fuel-flexible combustors. The experimental results of this thesis provide a valuable dataset for the validation of such theories." --

Book excerpt: Using a Burke-Schumman modeled co-flow burner, a quartz chimney, and a pressure vessel with good optical access, the smoke points in pure and diluted fuels were measured in a laminar jet diffusion flame. Ethylene and methane, burning in a velocity matched, over-ventilated co-flow of air, were tested over the ranges of 1 to 8 atmospheres and 2 to 16 atmospheres, respectively. Various diluents (nitrogen, argon, helium, and carbon dioxide) were added individually to the pure fuels to observe the effects they have on the smoke points and the adiabatic flame temperatures at atmospheric and elevated pressures. These diluents were chosen to allow a wide range of flame temperatures and fuel Lewis numbers to be investigated. For a given fuel flow rate, the dilution level was increased until the flame ceased emitting visible soot (defined as the smoke point). The height of the flame was then measured and the adiabatic flame temperature was calculated based on equilibrium chemistry. While some previous research has focused on the effects of flame temperature (through dilution) on smoke points, the measurements reported here were made to investigate the effects of pressure, different diluents, and varying dilution rates on sooting tendency. The main findings of these experiments were: increasing the amount of diluent to a pure fuel increases the smoke point, the smoke point is a function of the air to fuel velocity ratio, smoke point is strongly dependent on the inverse of pressure, and residence time decreases with increases in pressure.

Book excerpt: The continuation of an experimental flame study concerning the nonphysical processes that lead to soot suppression when water is added to fuel, begun in a previous program is reported. The study included a mapping of temperature, chemical species and soot profiles of laminar diffusion flames with and without water added. Fuels studied included ethylene and a benzene/hydrogen mixture. Flames with nonreactive gases added (argon, nitrogen), were also studied for comparison purposes. The study concludes that the reduction of soot by water in an ethylene diffusion flame can be completely explained by thermal effects. The results are not as definitive for benzene. The addition of water causes a greater reduction in soot than does a thermally equivalent addition of argon, but no noticeable differences in chemical species profiles are observed. There is evidence, however, that water addition causes an increase in concentration of an oxygen-containing tarry substance present in the flame prior to soot formation. During the course of the study it was also possible to estimate both soot particle diameters (1-2 x .000001 cm at the beginning of the oxidation zone) and an activation energy for soot oxidation by the OH radical (7-8 kcal/mole). In addition, it was possible to confirm the presence of and quantify the oxygen concentration in the center of diffusion flames, first reported under the previous program. (Author).
