Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Bud Formation: Progress of Investigations in 1908, 1909, 1910 The subject of fruit bud formation is so comprehensive that any investiga tion into the causes which bring about the formation of fruit buds, or into means by which these causes may be controlled or directed, leads one into a field so vast that it becomes immediately apparent that the subject must be studied phase by phase. Among the factors that underlie the formation of fruit buds are climatic conditions, varietal forms and adaptations, supply Of plant food, Supply Of moisture, age or maturity of the plant, and its health or vitality as affected by natural agencies such as attacks by insect pests, or fungous diseases, or by artificial practices such as pruning, training, thinning, and spraying. Investigations on fruit bud formation by the Department of Horticulture at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station have, therefore, been limited to such experiments as the material, means, and time of the department required. They are, however, designed to give results Of permanent value from a scientific standpoint as well as to furnish data Of practical value to the fruit growers of the state. In accordance with the plan Of limiting the field of investigation to the means at the disposal Of the department, it was decided to experiment only with the most important fruit grown in the state, the apple, and further to confine the work to the variety most largely grown, the Baldwin. The factors chosen as first in line for investigation include a comparative study of certain methods Of cultivation, fertilization and cover cropping. It was further planned to experiment on the effects Of both top and root pruning. The material, however, proved unsuitable for this purpose, the plan for top pruning being abandoned at the outset of the experiment and the attempt at special root-pruning being abandoned at the close Of the season Of 1910. This book was released on 1977 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The length of the 'Concord' grape rest period was evaluated during 1974-75 and 1975-76. Cuttings were placed in a 25 C growth chamber every two weeks from October through April. Number of days to reach 50 percent full bud swell was plotted to determine rest completion. Seven years of weather data and full bloom dates of 'Concord' grapes from Prosser, Washington were statistically analyzed to give another estimate of rest completion. Rest was terminated after about 830 chill units. During 1974-75 and 1975-76, T50 temperatures were determined every two weeks for both cambium and primary buds of 'Concord' grapes. The cambium ranged 2 to 10 C hardier than the primary buds. The T50 temperature pattern correlated with the minimum ambient air temperatures. Cuttings, collected and placed in growth chambers, were analyzed for both optimum and base temperatures. Optimum bud growth and development occurred at 25 C. The base temperature of first noticeable bud development was approximately 4.4 C. Bud phenological stages were followed both years and a standard set of pictures of representative stages was compiled. The growing degree hours (GDH) from end of rest to first bud swell through full bloom to maturity were determined. A regression line was plotted between the various GDH requirements for the percent soluble solids acquired during the 1975 and 1976 seasons. The GDH accumulation and soluble solids were well correlated with an r2 value of 0.95 percent.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual on the Culture of the Grape: With a Dissertation on the Growth and Management of Fruit Trees, Adapted to the Northern States I shall not attern t to give a botanical descrip tion of the. Grape ine. It is called the Vitis Vinifera of Europe, and some have supposed our American Vines to have had the same origin. There are some forty species, and an immense number of varieties. The practice in foreign vine yards of having different species and varieties in contiguity, would naturally cause an intermingling of numerous kinds with slight shades of difference. There is no period in the history of man, in which the Vine is not mentioned in language of grateful testimony that it is a blessing of the high est value. Its fruitfulness and its qualities, were well known in the days of Noah, and in all subse quent periods of time. Scripture in numerous instances has language peculiarly drawn from the culture of grapes and the wine - the pruning of the Vine - the treading of the grapes, which was the ancient method, and the wine press, are all incorporated with sacred writ. It is stated that a Helvetian named Helicon first made known the properties of the Vine at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grapes: Test of Varieties The results now obtained cannot be relied on wit/z certainty even for the vineyard in which the varieties have been grown, and must be less trustworthy for other places. As an illustration of what is meant, the behavior of some of the varieties of which several vines were planted may be noted. Until. The present season, all of the Concords have seemed in as good health as is usual with that variety. This season the leaves on one of the vines began to die about the latter part of July, and by the time the fruit should have been ripe nearly all the leaves were more or less affected, and at least one-third of them had fallen off. As a result of the diseased condition of the leaves, the fruit was very much later in ripening (at least a week or ten days), and it never attained either the size or richness in quality of the fruit on vines in perfect health. The vines also, necessarily, made less growth and ripened their wood less perfectly than those that had healthy foliage. The only difference between the treatment of the vine that was diseased and of those that remained healthy was in the method of training, and this was so slight, that it probably had no effect. Soil and culture were exactly the same, so far as one could judge by observation. There are eight vines of Delaware growing in the same vineyard. In the season of 1892 one of them shed its leaves early from disease, and the fruit, as a consequence, failed to ripen. Although it was left until the fruit was all gone from the healthy vines, the fruit on this one was still green and sour. This year (1893) the Vine that was diseased last year seemed to be in good health, While another one a short distance away shed its leaves prematurely and so failed to ripen its fruit properly. The method of training the two Delaware vines is somewhat different, though both are on a trellis. The behavior of Moore's early has not been the same for all the plants. Some of them shed their leaves so badly as to fail entirely to ripen the fruit while on others that held their foliage as they should the fruit ripened well.
