Diese Behinderungen reichen von kleinen, nicht unbedingt für jedermann sichtbaren Behinderungen bis hin zum Schwerstpflegefall. Jedes Kind ist im Grunde von Behinderung bedroht, denn ein Unfall kann die Gesundheit bleibend zerstören. Die Zahl der Behinderungen durch genetische Ursachen ist in den letzten Jahren stark zurückgegangen, bedingt durch bessere Früherkennung von Chromosomenschäden und daraus folgende Schwangerschaftsunterbrechungen. Im Gegenzug sind Behinderungen, die durch Erziehungs- und Milieueinflüsse entstehen, im Vormarsch begriffen. Dazu sind beispielsweise alle Formen der Lern- und Sprachbehinderungen sowie Verhaltensstörungen zu zählen. Weitere Ursachen für Behinderungen liegen oftmals im medizinischen Fortschritt: Im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre ist es den Medizinern geglückt, immer mehr Frühgeborene am Leben zu erhalten Selbst Frühgeborene der 24. Schwangerschaftswoche haben inzwischen reelle Überlebenschancen. Eine Folge von extremer Frühgeburtlichkeit sind diverse Behinderungen. Vor wenigen Jahren noch hätten solche Kinder als Spätaborte gegolten und wären verstorben.
