Book excerpt: The behavior of concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars has been the focus of many studies in recent years. Nowadays, several codes and design guidelines are available for the design of concrete structures reinforced with FRP bars under flexural and shear loads. Meanwhile, limited research work has been conducted to examine the axial behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns with FRP bars. Due to a lack of research investigating the axial behavior of FRP reinforced concrete columns, North American codes and design guidelines do not recommend using FRP bars as longitudinal reinforcement in columns to resist compressive stresses. This dissertation aims at evaluating the axial performance of RC compression members reinforced with glass FRP (GFRP) and carbon FRP (CFRP) bars and stirrups through experimental and analytical investigations. A total of twenty seven full scale circular RC specimens were fabricated and tested experimentally under concentric axial load. The 300 mm diameter columns were designed according to CAN/CSA S806-12 code requirements. The specimens were divided to three series; series I contains three reference columns; one plain concrete and 2 specimens reinforced with steel reinforcement. Series II contains 12 specimens internally reinforced with GFRP longitudinal bars and transverse GFRP stirrups, while series III includes specimens totally reinforced with CFRP reinforcement. The experimental tests were performed at the structural laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sherbrooke. The main objective of testing these specimens is to investigate the behavior of circular concrete columns reinforced with GFRP or CFRP longitudinal bars and transverse hoops or spirals reinforcement. Several parameters have been studied; type of reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the volumetric ratios, diameters, and spacing of spiral reinforcement, confinement configuration (spirals versus hoops), and lap length of hoops. The test results of the tested columns were presented and discussed in terms of axial load capacity, mode of failure, concrete, longitudinal, and transverse strains, ductility, load/stress-strain response, and concrete confinement strength through four journal papers presented in this dissertation. Based on the findings of experimental investigation, the GFRP and CFRP RC columns behaved similar to the columns reinforced with steel. It was found that, FRP bars were effective in resisting compression until after crushing of concrete, and contributed on average 8% and 13% of column capacity for GFRP and CFRP RC specimens, respectively. Also, the use of GFRP and CFRP spirals or hoops according to the provisions of CSA S806-12 yielded sufficient restraint against the buckling of the longitudinal FRP bars and provided good confinement of the concrete core in the post-peak stages. The axial deformability (ductility) and confinement efficiency can be better improved by using small FRP spirals with closer spacing rather than larger diameters with greater spacing. It was found that, ignoring the contribution of FRP longitudinal bars in the CAN/CSA S806-12 design equation underestimated the maximum capacity of the tested specimens. Based on this finding, the design equation is modified to accurately predict the ultimate load capacities of FRP RC columns. New factors [alpha][indice inférieur g] and [alpha][indice inférieur c] were introduced in the modified equation to account for the GFRP and CFRP bars compressive strength properties as a function in their ultimate tensile strength. On the other hand, proposed equations and confinement model were presented to predict the axial stress-strain behavior of FRP RC columns confined by FRP spirals or hoops. The model takes into account the effect of many parameters such as; type of reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement ratio; transverse reinforcement configuration; and the volumetric ratio. The proposed model can be used to evaluate the confining pressure, confined concrete core stress, corresponding concrete strain, and stress-strain relationship. The results of analysis using the proposed confinement model were compared with experimental database of twenty four full-scale circular FRP RC columns. A good agreement has been obtained between the analytical and experimental results. Proposed equations to predict both strength and stress-strain behavior of confined columns by FRP reinforcements demonstrate good correlation with test data obtained from full-scale specimens.

Book excerpt: The use of FRP materials in strengthening and repairing of reinforced concrete (RC) structures has increased in the past two decades. Recently, FRP materials have become one of the most used materials in rehabilitation engineering. For seismic retrofitting of RC structures, usually the process involves strengthening or repairing the vertical support elements of the buildings or bridges. Although glass FRP (GFRP) and basalt FRP (BFRP) rods have been used in flexural strengthening of RC columns, NSM-CFRP rods have not been used yet. In addition, studies in the use of CFRP ropes in flexural strengthening or repairing of RC columns are not available. To address these gaps, an experimental investigation was conducted on the use of CFRP materials in strengthening and repairing RC columns. The investigation consisted of three main parts. The three parts focused on strengthening and repairing slender RC columns using CFRP materials. The first part of the investigation focused on the use of CFRP sheets, rods, and ropes in flexural strengthening of RC columns. The results showed that both EB and NSM techniques can effectively be used in strengthening slender RC columns. In addition, CFRP ropes are very effective in strengthening RC columns. Finally, a theoretical model was created to predict the load-displacement response of RC columns strengthened with EB-CFRP sheets and NSM-CFRP rods and ropes. The theoretical results showed good agreement with the experimental results. The second part of the investigation focused on the use of CFRP sheets and ropes in repairing damaged RC columns. Recently, RC columns have been upgraded and strengthened with FRP confinement all around the globe. Future cases of repair will likely encounter RC columns that were strengthened previously with FRP confinement. However, studies on repairing damaged columns that were enhanced by confinement before damage are not currently available. Moreover, there is a vital need for an emergency repair technique that can be used to rapidly repair damaged columns of essential structures after a seismic event. In this study, the time required to complete the repair was a key factor to propose a rapid CFRP-based repair technique. Test results showed that the proposed repair technique was effective not only by restoring the original strength, but also by improving the strength significantly. Moreover, the measured and idealized load-displacement response showed that the ductility of the repaired column was reasonably sufficient. The proposed technique appears promising and may be considered as a permanent repair technique. The third part of the investigation focused on the tensile strength of CFRP ropes anchored to concrete using chemical epoxy. One of the major problems with using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) in strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures is premature debonding of FRP. Anchoring FRP materials to concrete has become associated with most of the strengthening techniques. In the present study, FRP anchors were made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) ropes and had long embedment to be used for flexural strengthening of RC columns. Test results showed that the pullout strength of CFRP anchors increased with the increase in embedment length, and no significant effect of the hole diameter on the pullout strength was observed. However, the bond strength increased with decreasing embedment length and hole diameter. For shorter embedment lengths, the distribution of the bond stress along the length of the anchor is expected to be more uniform than that of anchors with longer embedment lengths. The average bond stress (strength) is calculated by dividing the maximum pullout force by the embedment length. Therefore, increasing the embedment length without significant improvement in the pullout load results in lower bond strength. The observed pullout results and failure modes were compared to the predictions using available models. Finally, a modified model was proposed to predict the pullout strength of CFRP rope anchors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of their structural simplicity, bridges tend to beparticularly vulnerable to damage and even collapse when subjectedto earthquakes or other forms of seismic activity. Recentearthquakes, such as the ones in Kobe, Japan, and Oakland,California, have led to a heightened awareness of seismic risk andhave revolutionized bridge design and retrofit philosophies. In Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges, three of the world's topauthorities on the subject have collaborated to produce the mostexhaustive reference on seismic bridge design currently available.Following a detailed examination of the seismic effects of actualearthquakes on local area bridges, the authors demonstrate designstrategies that will make these and similar structures optimallyresistant to the damaging effects of future seismicdisturbances. Relying heavily on worldwide research associated with recentquakes, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges begins with anin-depth treatment of seismic design philosophy as it applies tobridges. The authors then describe the various geotechnicalconsiderations specific to bridge design, such as soil-structureinteraction and traveling wave effects. Subsequent chapters coverconceptual and actual design of various bridge superstructures, andmodeling and analysis of these structures. As the basis for their design strategies, the authors' focus is onthe widely accepted capacity design approach, in which particularlyvulnerable locations of potentially inelastic flexural deformationare identified and strengthened to accommodate a greater degree ofstress. The text illustrates how accurate application of thecapacity design philosophy to the design of new bridges results instructures that can be expected to survive most earthquakes withonly minor, repairable damage. Because the majority of today's bridges were built before thecapacity design approach was understood, the authors also devoteseveral chapters to the seismic assessment of existing bridges, with the aim of designing and implementing retrofit measures toprotect them against the damaging effects of future earthquakes. These retrofitting techniques, though not considered appropriate inthe design of new bridges, are given considerable emphasis, sincethey currently offer the best solution for the preservation ofthese vital and often historically valued thoroughfares. Practical and applications-oriented, Seismic Design and Retrofit ofBridges is enhanced with over 300 photos and line drawings toillustrate key concepts and detailed design procedures. As the onlytext currently available on the vital topic of seismic bridgedesign, it provides an indispensable reference for civil, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as students inrelated engineering courses. A state-of-the-art text on earthquake-proof design and retrofit ofbridges Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges fills the urgent need for acomprehensive and up-to-date text on seismic-ally resistant bridgedesign. The authors, all recognized leaders in the field, systematically cover all aspects of bridge design related toseismic resistance for both new and existing bridges. * A complete overview of current design philosophy for bridges, with related seismic and geotechnical considerations * Coverage of conceptual design constraints and their relationshipto current design alternatives * Modeling and analysis of bridge structures * An exhaustive look at common building materials and theirresponse to seismic activity * A hands-on approach to the capacity design process * Use of isolation and dissipation devices in bridge design * Important coverage of seismic assessment and retrofit design ofexisting bridges

Book excerpt: "Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) jacketing of Reinforced Concrete (RC) columns, as a rapidly growing strengthening technique, requires appropriate design methods. However, the current available design guides are based on models, in their majority semi-empirical, and calibrated with small-scale plain concrete specimens. These models might not be reliable in predicting the strength and ductility enhancement sought through FRP-confinement in RC columns with geometric and material properties as found in practice. This dissertation presents the research conducted in three technical papers. In the first paper, the performance of 22 FRP-wrapped RC columns of medium- and large-scale is studied. The results of the experimental campaign were used to develop and evaluate an analytical method to determine the confining pressure and compressive capacity in a non-circular column ... A second paper is devoted to the review of state-of-the-art design methodologies available for the case of FRP-confined RC columns, and their ability to predict the increment of compressive strength and ductility ... a third paper address the subject of FRP-confined RC columns subjected to combined axial load and bending moment"--Abstract, p. iv.

Book excerpt: The first textbook on the design of FRP for structural engineering applications Composites for Construction is a one-of-a-kind guide to understanding fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and designing and retrofitting structures with FRP. Written and organized like traditional textbooks on steel, concrete, and wood design, it demystifies FRP composites and demonstrates how both new and retrofit construction projects can especially benefit from these materials, such as offshore and waterfront structures, bridges, parking garages, cooling towers, and industrial buildings. The code-based design guidelines featured in this book allow for demonstrated applications to immediately be implemented in the real world. Covered codes and design guidelines include ACI 440, ASCE Structural Plastics Design Manual, EUROCOMP Design Code, AASHTO Specifications, and manufacturer-published design guides. Procedures are provided to the structural designer on how to use this combination of code-like documents to design with FRP profiles. In four convenient sections, Composites for Construction covers: * An introduction to FRP applications, products and properties, and to the methods of obtaining the characteristic properties of FRP materials for use in structural design * The design of concrete structural members reinforced with FRP reinforcing bars * Design of FRP strengthening systems such as strips, sheets, and fabrics for upgrading the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete structural members * The design of trusses and frames made entirely of FRP structural profiles produced by the pultrusion process

Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are increasingly used for seismic retrofit of undamaged bridge columns. The addition of a confining jacket increases overall strength and ductility of the column. However, FRPs can also be used for repair of a damaged bridge column after a seismic event. This research project explores the application of FRPs for retrofit of damaged circular columns. A decision tree for the emergency repair of damaged columns is presented. The decision tree aids field engineers first in assessing the extent of damage to a column from a seismic event, impact or any other source of damage. Once the level of damage is specified, the decision tree can be used to determine the feasibility of FRP retrofitting. If an FRP jacket is a viable option, suggested simplified design guidelines can be used to determine the design thickness and type of required FRP jacket that should be used for the emergency repair of the column. The project included detailed evaluation of existing confining models and a proposition of a new model based on a large database of previously tested specimen columns. Several design equations were also evaluated in order to find the most accurate yet simple approach for the design thickness. The end result is a step-by-step simplified guide for engineers to use in the field for emergency repair of damaged circular bridge columns.

Book excerpt: In 2003, an experimental research program was initiated at the American Univers ity of Beirut with the objectives of (i) evaluating the effectiveness of externa l FRP confinement in improving the bond strength of spliced reinforcement in rei nforced concrete (RC) columns and its implications on the lateral load capacity and ductility of the columns under seismic loading; and (ii) establishing ration al design criteria for bond strengthening of spliced reinforcement using externa l FRP jackets. This research will present the results of experimental investigat ion on the use of external FRP wraps for bond strengthening of spliced reinforce ment in circular reinforced concrete columns. Full scale FRP confined circular c olumn specimens (six specimens) with lap-spliced reinforcement at the base will be tested. The test parameters include the size of steel bars, the ratio of conc rete cover to bar diameter, and the amount of confinement (number of layers of F RP). Control samples (three specimens, without FRP) will also be tested for comp arison.
