Download or read book Present Concepts in Internal Medicine. Volume VII, Number 1, January-February 1974. Lung Cancer Symposium written by Edward E. Mays and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium, a collection of eleven articles, was originally presented as a series of lectures in the autumn of 1973. The authors have refined them for a reading audience, updated some of the information, and added a summary article. The symposium addresses itself to the different types of lung cancer, the varied clinical and roentgenographic presentations, the surgical, radiation and chemotherapeutic techniques and finally a philosophical look at the overall problem. With a latent period of 30 to 40 years between onset of smoking exposure and onset of lung cancer, we are in the midst of an epidemic spawned among American men and women during World Wars I and II. With the Korean and Vietnamese Wars following closely, we as clinicians face an onset of lung cancers without foreseeable end. (Modified author abstract).

Book Synopsis The Diabetic Pancreas by : Bruno Volk
Download or read book The Diabetic Pancreas written by Bruno Volk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I consider it an honor to have been asked to write the Foreword for The Diabetic Pancreas. Although I have been involved in the study of the pancreas since 1921, my interest goes back even further to the time, in 1918, that my father's sister, a nurse who had trained at the Massachusetts General Hospit.al, devel oped diabetes, lost weight, and died in diabetic coma. This sad event made a deep impression on me and was certainly pardy responsible for my choosing to join the Department of Physiology of the University of Toronto to begin a career in research into diabetes. This is not the place to describe in detail the wide-ranging research and study of the diabetic pancreas in which I have engaged in the past 56 years. Suffice it to say that I am familiar enough with the subject area to be able to predict a great future for this book. The editors have undertaken a very ambitious and worthwhile project, and their efforts have been supported and strengthened by contributors who are respected authorities in their fields, thus ensuring a successful presentation of this major work.

Book Synopsis Current Practices in Sickle Cell Disease by : Marwa Zakaria
Download or read book Current Practices in Sickle Cell Disease written by Marwa Zakaria and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder of the globin chains that causes hemolysis and chronic organ damage. Sickle cell anemia is the most common form of sickle cell disease (SCD), with a lifelong affliction of hemolytic anemia requiring blood transfusions, pain crises, and organ damage. Since the first description of the irregular sickle-shaped red blood cells (RBCs) more than 100 years ago, our understanding of the disease has evolved tremendously. Recent advances in the field, more so within the last three decades, have alleviated symptoms for countless patients, especially in high-income countries. Although there is evidence of several important therapies in the pipeline, greater investment in research is needed into both of these therapies and the dissemination of effective care to the affected population, especially because of historical mistrust. In this book, we present an overview of sickle cell disease, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, complications, and recent treatment modalities and prospective research that will enable the reader to get a better understanding of this hot topic.
