Book excerpt: AIDS: An African Perspective is the first authoritative account that provides an overview of the AIDS problem in Africa. Written by an African scientist who has worked for over two decades comparing diseases prevalent in Africa to those of the developed world, the book addresses a number of topics relevant to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with AIDS and HIV infections in Africa. The book presents the results of new research (including new hypotheses and terminology) and outlines recommendations for the control of AIDS in Africa as presented to the African Ministers of Health in 1989 in Uganda. The molecular biology and viral pathogenesis of HIV-1 and HIV-2 are discussed, as is the epidemiology of HTLV-I in the African diaspora. Little known bibliographic references, written in English and other languages, are also provided. AIDS: An African Perspective will be useful to scholars, researchers, and students in epidemiology, public health, pathology, internal medicine, infectious diseases, immunology, virology, oncology, molecular biology, sociology, and anthropology. It will be invaluable to members of the medical, dental, nursing, and laboratory technology community, particularly for individuals who work or intend to work in Africa or Third World scenarios. NEW INFORMATION FOR THE MEDICAL WORLD The book presents new research and terminology to the medical world. These are described briefly below: Molecular analyses of recent and archival tissues for HIV-1 DNA sequences using PCR on paraffin-embedded tissues from Africans with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) before and after the onset of the AIDS epidemic were studied for the first time and comparisons made with similar studies carried out on tissues from American Blacks and Hispanics in North America. Immunohistochemical studies using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to HIV on African AIDS tissues and electronmicroscopy were also carried out and reported for the first time. The term Kaposigenesis is being introduced into the medical literature for the first time to describe the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. The author proposes to outline the possible mechanisms for its development and to harmonize the current diverse views about the histagenesis of this enigmatic malignancy. The author also proposes a classification of KS that utilizes the etiologic role of retroviruses as an important distinguishing factor.

Download or read book Retroviruses written by John M. Coffin and published by CSHL Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 25 years the study of retroviruses has underpinned much of what is known about information transfer in cells and the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that underlie cell growth and cancer induction. Emergent diseases such as AIDS and adult T-cell lymphoma have widened even further the community of investigators directly concerned with retroviruses, a development that has highlighted the need for an integrated understanding of their biology and their unique association with host genomes. This remarkable volume satisfies that need. Written by a group of the field's most distinguished investigators, rigorously edited to provide a seamless narrative, and elegantly designed for clarity and readability, this book is an instant classic that demands attention from scientists and physicians studying retroviruses and the disorders in which they play a role.

Book Synopsis Growth Factors in Health and Disease by : Bengt Westermark
Download or read book Growth Factors in Health and Disease written by Bengt Westermark and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1990 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing understanding that growth factors are of great importance for the regulation of cell multiplication and differentiation in normal development and in the adult organism of higher eukaryotes. Moreover, growth factors have adverse effects in several malignant and nonmalignant disease processes. In recent years, a number of polypeptide growth factors have been identified, purified and molecularly cloned. The effects and mechanisms of action of these growth factors have mainly been studied in cell culture systems. This book provides an update on the role of these growth factors in vivo, both in normal development and in pathological disorders. Moreover, the clinical application of growth factors is described.

Book Synopsis Retroviruses, retroelements and their restrictions by : Atsushi Koito
Download or read book Retroviruses, retroelements and their restrictions written by Atsushi Koito and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human retroviruses, HIV and HTLV have been recognized as important pathogens because of their association with lethal diseases such as AIDS and ATL. Considerable resources and efforts have been directed at understanding the interaction between these retroviruses and their host which may provide clues as to how the infection can be controlled or prevented. Among the key scientific successes is the identification of intracellular “restriction factors” that have evolved as obstacles to the replication of pathogens including infectious retroviruses. The discovery of APOBEC, which are strong mutagens of retroviral genomes and intracellular retroelements, began a new era of intense research activities into the spectrum of intrinsic anti-HIV activity, leading to the identification of TRIM5a, BST2/Tetherin, and SAMHD1. In response, HIV has evolved several accessory genes as weaponries to evade these intracellular restriction activities. The intracellular antiretroviral defenses evolved in response to endogenous retroelements that make up more than 40% of the entire mammalian genome, and which are regarded as ancestors of infectious retroviruses. LTR-type retroelements are present in all higher eukaryotes, representing about 8% of the human genome. Non-LTR retroelements can be found at extremely high copy numbers also, with a significant portion of mammalin genomes consisting of LINEs. Mammalian genomes are modified by LINEs through insertions, but also by the indirect replication of non-autonomous retrotransposons such as SINEs. LINEs insertion was shown to have played, and continue to play important roles in genomic evolution and somatic genome mosaicism-mediated physiology. And, because retrotransposition can confer genetic diversity that is beneficial to the host, the vertebrate intrinsic immunity has evolved to support a balance between retroelement insertions that confer beneficial and those that cause deleterious gene disruptions. The articles published in this Research Topic should serve not only as valuable references for the field, but provide future topics of research for investigators that should further our understanding of the retrovirus, retroelements and their restrictions.
Book Synopsis Addiction Neuroethics by : Adrian Carter
Download or read book Addiction Neuroethics written by Adrian Carter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addiction is a significant health and social problem and one of the largest preventable causes of disease globally. Neuroscience promises to revolutionise our ability to treat addiction, lead to recognition of addiction as a 'real' disorder in need of medical treatment and thereby reduce stigma and discrimination. However, neuroscience raises numerous social and ethical challenges: • If addicted individuals are suffering from a brain disease that drives them to drug use, should we mandate treatment? • Does addiction impair an individual's ability to consent to research or treatment? • How will neuroscience affect social policies towards drug use? Addiction Neuroethics addresses these challenges by examining ethical implications of emerging neurobiological treatments, including: novel psychopharmacology, neurosurgery, drug vaccines to prevent relapse, and genetic screening to identify individuals who are vulnerable to addiction. Essential reading for academics, clinicians, researchers and policy-makers in the fields of addiction, mental health and public policy.
Book Synopsis Models of Protection Against HIV/SIV by : Gianfranco Pancino
Download or read book Models of Protection Against HIV/SIV written by Gianfranco Pancino and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A successful vaccine for the prevention and/or immunotherapy against HIV/AIDS is one of the prominent challenges of the 21st century. To date, all human vaccine trials against this virus/disease have resulted in failure, or at best have shown very low efficacy. The scientific community dealing with HIV/AIDS has unanimously proposed a focus on basic science, with the intention of identifying correlates of protection that can serve as guides in developing and evaluating vaccine preparation. However, Nature seems to have already found several ways of dealing with infections by HIV and related primate lentiviruses, either by resisting infection or, once infected, avoiding immune damage and immunodeficiency. Models of Protection Against HIV/SIV will allow for an in-depth reflection on the perspectives for vaccine and therapy research derived from important recent studies. It will be authored by some of the most well known specialists in the field of HIV resistance/protection: including F. Barré-Sinoussi (2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine winner), B. Walker, S. Rowland-Jones, A. Telenti, M. Lederman and F. Plummer. This book is structured in a unique way, looking at three models of resistance/protection separately and then comparing the models against one another to provide its readership with a detailed examination of the research that is most predominant in the search for a vaccine. This structure presents the information in an easy-to-understand format and gives the book a cross-discipline appeal -- an important reference for those in the scientific community, medical care, public health and academia alike. Provides extensive descriptions and comparisons on the different models of protection agains HIV/AIDS Comprehensive writing and illustrations Contributors are among the most eminent specialists in the field

This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a review and analysis of the research landscape for zoonoses and marginalized infections which affect poor populations, and a list of research priorities to support disease control. The work is the output of the disease reference group on zoonoses and marginalized infectious diseases (DRG6), which is part of an independent think tank of international experts, established and funded by the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), to identify key research priorities through the review of research evidence and input from stakeholder consultations. The report covers a diverse range of diseases including zoonotic helminth protozoa, viral and bacterial infections considered to be neglected and associated with poverty. Disease-specific research issues were elaborated under individual disease sections and many common priorities were readily identified among the disease such as need for new and/or improved drugs and regimens, diagnostics and, where appropriate, vaccines. The disease specific priorities are described as micro priorities compared with the macro level priorities which will drive such policies as the need for improved surveillance; the need for inter-sectoral interaction between health, livestock, agriculture, natural resources and wildlife in tackling the zoonotic diseases; and the need for a true assessment of the burden of the zoonoses. This is one of ten disease and thematic reference group reports that have come out of the TDR Think Tank, all of which have contributed to the development of the Global Report for Research on Infectious Diseases of Poverty.
