Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War was no stranger to the town of Sudbury, Massachusetts. A small farming community at the outbreak of the Civil War, Sudbury stood ready to support the cause of the Union. Uriah and Mary Moore, a local farmer and his wife, parents of ten children, sent four sons off to fight for the Union. George Frederick Moore was twenty years old when he joined the Thirty-fifth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers in 1862, along with brother, Albert. Their brother, John, had enlisted in the Thirteenth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers and had been serving since 1861. In 1864, a fourth brother, Alfred, joined the Fifty-ninth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. The eighty-four letters in this collection span the years from August 1862 to the end of the War and include correspondence to and from Pvt. George Moore and five family members. Georges personal diaries from 1863 and 1864 are also included, as well as the 1867 diary of Sarah Jones, the girl he married. Through research the family is traced long after the war, revealing their travels and accomplishments. Explanatory passages that accompany these letters highlight the campaigns of the Thirty-fifth Regiment through the war years. George Moore took part in battles from South Mountain and Antietam to Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Campbells Station, and the Siege of Knoxville. He participated in the Battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and the assault on Petersburg. The letters to and from George Moore and his loved ones provide an intimate glimpse of the trials, not only of the soldiers, but of the family who sent their boys off to war.

With great clarity and sensitivity, this groundbreaking book from Dr. Evelyn Bassoff, acclaimed psychologist and author of Mothers and Daughters, explains how mothers can remain nurturing presences in their sons' lives throughout their many transitions. She details the important role a father plays in a son's growth, and how mothers can support and celebrate their sons' masculine energy -- whether it manifests itself in a love of playing football or playing piano. Book excerpt: From Jacqueline Jackson, wife of Jesse Jackson, role model, and civil rights veteran, comes an inspiring gift of love to a child in his darkest hour—and a lesson to everyone who has been touched by the scourge of mass incarceration. Jacqueline Jackson promised her son, Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., that she would write him every day during his incarceration in prison while he served his thirty-month sentence. This book is an inspiring and moving selection of the letters she wrote him. Together, they comprise a powerful act of love—nurturing and ministering to her son's heart, health, and mind and maintaining his essential connection with home. Frank, anecdotal, imbued with faith, and sometimes humorous, they offer intimate details from the family’s daily life, along with news of friends and the community and glimpses of such figures as Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela, and Mayor Marion Barry. They also touch eloquently on issues of social justice, politics, and history, as when Mrs. Jackson recalls growing up in Jim Crow Florida, and they reflect the qualities, instilled by her own mother, that made her a role model for much of her life. Ultimately, these letters offer a blueprint for why we have to support our families not just as they elevate but when they fall. This collection is Mrs. Jackson's contribution to healing during a time when our prisons are full and our communities are suffering. She provides the road map for ensuring that the individuals serving sentences understand that prison is where they are, not who they are and for helping them sustain the courage to keep hope alive.

Book excerpt: Your Loving Son, Andrew is the story of a young man named Andrew Knox who leaves behind his parents and his responsibilities on the family farm in Virginia to enlist as a soldier in the U.S. army, enticed by the promise of seeing the world and learning what it truly means to be a man. After a heartfelt goodbye to his parents, Mike and Marie Knox, Andrew is on the bus heading to basic training when he meets Donald Birch, another young man who also enlisted in the hopes of making something of himself. Andy and Don become fast friends as they endure the hardships of basic training together, and they are ultimately deployed in the same unit to serve their country in Afghanistan. Frequently told in long and sincere letters between Andy and his parents during his deployment, the novel follows Andy and Don as they navigate life at war, undergoing harsh treatment from their commanders alongside dangerous brushes with local citizens. But when tragedy strikes and both men are injured during a bombing, a wedge is driven between them that threatens to end their friendship. Meanwhile Mike and Marie wait anxiously back at the farm for news about when Andy will be coming home. A story about family and friendship, sacrifice and responsibility, Your Loving Son, Andrew explores the limits of what we can endure for the people we love.
