Book Synopsis The WritersNet Anthology of Prose by : Gary D. Kessler
Download or read book The WritersNet Anthology of Prose written by Gary D. Kessler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WritersNet Anthology of Prose reverses the trend of the publishing industry expanding onto the Internet. What began as an on-line evaluation and editing workshop on the WritersNet website turned this trend on its head when the best of the material submitted by writers across four continents, both published and unpublished, both previous best-sellers and those seeking their first appearance in print, was published in this two-volume anthology. This project not only showcases the widely diverse talent of new and established writers and has established a new common-purpose dimension of community among the writers participating in WritersNet, but it also serves the community at large, as all profits above production costs are being donated to the Salvation Army in remembrance of the events of 9/11. The resulting fiction collection of sixty short stories by fifty-three separate authors provided in this volume one of the anthology, WritersNet Anthology of Prose: Fiction, is much more eclectic than is normal with such works. These stories defy the normal “common thread in content” rule. You can find something here to entertain you—and to make you ponder—no matter what your reading pleasure. Explore and enjoy.

Download or read book Mount Pleasant written by Steve Poizner and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Silicon Valley entrepreneur takes on the challenge of a lifetime: teaching in one of California's toughest high schools. Entrepreneur Steve Poizner has run a billion dollar company, but the greatest challenge of his life was the year he spent teaching twelfth graders at San Jose's Mt. Pleasant High School. On many days, like the one when a student's boyfriend was arrested for bank robbery, his managerial and entrepreneurial skills seemed irrelevant. But on others, they helped him demonstrate how exciting it is to learn. Playing Jeopardy with the class and inviting speakers into the classroom, Poizner motivated his students by expanding their horizons far beyond their high school's walls. Poizner writes, "Often I came to ask myself one question: What exactly are you doing here? As it turns out, I was receiving one hell of an education." Mt Pleasant is ultimately a success story, as Poizner wins Rookie Teacher of the Year honors and, more important, ensures that all his students graduate.

Book Synopsis The Poems of Lord Byron - Don Juan by : Jane Stabler
Download or read book The Poems of Lord Byron - Don Juan written by Jane Stabler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-07 with total page 1280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byron’s Don Juan is one of the greatest poems in the English language. Byron’s friends initially agreed that ‘it will be impossible to publish this’. Byron prevailed, however, and the first two cantos were issued anonymously after much editorial revision. Even in its revised form, Don Juan was perceived as a radical attack on establishment values; the poem has remained a beacon for freedom of speech and retains its power to shock. Since it was published in 1819–24, all printed editions of the poem have used the text prepared by Byron’s publishers, John Murray and John Hunt. This is the first new text of the poem to be printed in two hundred years. The Longman edition is based on a comprehensive line-by-line analysis of the manuscripts, so the text of the poem follows Byron’s own voice, pace and pauses, rather than the grammatical punctuation and more cautious word choice inserted by his nineteenth-century editors. The Longman Don Juan has been annotated afresh, allowing readers to see where Byron left open the choice of words or rhymes, and demonstrating the extraordinary breadth and depth of his literary allusions, topical and cultural references, and socially coded jokes. Textual annotation includes reception history, extensive bibliographies and a detailed chronology, situating Don Juan in the literary, scientific, dramatic, political, musical and social life of the early nineteenth century. A detailed index to the poem and annotation provides an unparalleled resource for students and scholars.
Book Synopsis Class, Place, and Higher Education by : Alexandra Coleman
Download or read book Class, Place, and Higher Education written by Alexandra Coleman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education is seen to be a means to “the” good life and is a dominant way societies distribute hope for social mobility. But does higher education deliver on its promise? This book attends to the hopes, experiences, and trajectories of working-class students and graduates from Western Sydney – an area that is imagined, from the outside, to be a place of lack and stagnation, the “other” Sydney. This book challenges the myth that participation in higher education necessarily leads to upward social mobility and traces how the rewards of higher education are unevenly distributed. It considers how visions of a good life are class differentiated and makes an argument for the significance of place when examining experiences of higher education. Rather than focus on university as a means to becoming middle class, Class, Place, and Higher Education examines how university becomes a means to “a” good life, not “the” good life, a good life that is embedded in place, in working-class places like Western Sydney, and one that becomes more complex and ambivalent through the process of going to university. Through an attention to the existential and social dimensions of mobility, Alexandra Coleman develops the term “homely mobility” to describe the pull of people and place, and small-scale degrees of mobility in place – to a better street, the suburb next door, the university down the road. Structural inequalities are an embodied dimension of social being and action, and through the lens of homely mobility, this book affords insights into broader processes of social reproduction and transformation.
