This speech marked the beginning of the Peace Corps program in the United States, which in turn led a young American to my small farming village of Agadji in Togo, West Africa. This young American sponsored me into the United States in June of 1989, a fulfillment in itself of my father's secretly held dream to see one of his children educated in an English-speaking Country, better yet in the United States of America. Education has always been very important to my father because he was denied that opportunity due to being an orphan at a very young age. He wished to attend school and become a lawyer or doctor, but instead, he was forced to become a farmer and eventually one of the best-known coffee growers in Togo. In June of 1999, I was able to invite my father to the United States for a year-long visit, during which I was able to enroll him in Kalamazoo Adult Education as another way to fulfill his dream of being a student. In October 2001, I invited my dear mother also to the United States for a year-long visit, giving both my wonderful parents a unique and unforgettable their FIRST plane ride experience. Travel along with me as I journey through a father and son's dream to a better tomorrow.

It exposes believers to the Scriptural mandate to care for orphans, helps them understand why God has issued that call, and equips them to joyfully respond to that call. It strives to achieve this purpose by developing a vibrant theology of orphan ministry for the church. Each chapter is accompanied with study questions so that it can be used in both personal study or with a small-group.

Book excerpt: I want to give away to you in this book . . . the ability to see and recognize every obstacle in front of your artistic path as something that can be knocked down and moved aside. If you are willing to put effort in, you can win. If you don’t quit, you win. Heidi Korte spent years holding back as a singer because of toxic mindsets. Her self-esteem was rooted in having perfect performances and receiving top marks in singing competitions. Seeing the same mental obstacles blocking the artistic journeys of an overwhelming number of her students, she began working with them, helping them avoid the common pitfalls that most young creatives experience but so few talk about. In On the Edge of Greatness, Heidi shares the secrets to becoming an authentic creator, along with wisdom and real-life stories from her students and professional creatives, to help identify lie-based thinking and change false belief systems so the reader can learn to move past negativity and be free to create with ease and joy. Each chapter delves into a mental obstacle that hinders young creatives, including: • fear • comparison • rejection • perfectionism • time management • avoidance • negative feedback • embarrassment • anxiety • arrogance and self-sufficiency • creative blocks • failure • motivation • self-doubt • schedule overload • self-discipline • social media and steps to practically overcome them. Also included are actions to take, meditations, questions to work through, and space for personal reflection and note-taking. On the Edge of Greatness is designed to inspire young creatives to move beyond their self-imposed limitations and turn creative dreams into realities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful story touched with family trauma, deprivation, and adversity balanced by a life of hard work and philanthropy! On the Road Less Traveled is the inspirational story of Edmund A. Hajim, an American financier and philanthropist who rises from dire childhood circumstances to achieve professional success and personal fulfillment. At age three, Hajim is kidnapped by his father, driven from St. Louis to Los Angeles, and told that his mother is dead. His father soon abandons him in order to seek employment—mostly in vain—leaving his son behind in a string of foster homes and orphanages. This establishes a pattern of neglect and desertion that continues for Hajim’s entire childhood, forever leaving its mark. From one home to another, the lonely boy learns the value of self-reliance and perseverance despite his financial deprivation and the trauma of being an orphan. As time passes, Hajim displays a powerful instinct for survival and a burning drive to excel. A highly motivated student and athlete, he earns an NROTC college scholarship to the University of Rochester; serves in the United States Navy; works as an application research engineer; then attends Harvard Business School, where he finds that the financial industry is his true calling. So begins his rapid ascent in the corporate world, which includes senior executive positions at E. F. Hutton, Lehman Brothers, and fourteen years as CEO of Furman Selz, growing the company more than tenfold. He also creates a happy and abundant family life, though he never forgets what it means to struggle. At age sixty, he is reminded of his painful past when a family secret emerges that brings the story full circle.

Book excerpt: Kurdistan, Persia. A village high in the Zagros mountains. A small green-eyed boy wrestles free from his mother and climbs atop a straw and mud hut to gaze at the dusty landscape; the jagged mountains and azure sky, the cattle in the distance. With his arms stretched out beside him he pretends to be a bird, to lift up and soar over this land: the land of his fathers and forefathers. Kurdish land. Soon after he is ritually initiated into manhood, messengers from the hills bring whispers of war; rumours that the Shah's army is moving from village to village, stamping out any tribal rebellion that may stand in the way of the creation of a unified 'Iran'. Just nine years old, the boy must stand alongside his men and fight for their land. Years later, Reza Pahlavi Khourdi can only faintly recall the brutal murder of his father and cousins. Orphaned on the bloody battlefield, conscripted into the great column of the army and given a new name, he has quickly risen up the ranks, proving both his prowess in battle and allegiance to the Shah's troops. Now in Tehran, Reza is about to marry to a beautiful, educated, city girl, and become a Capitian. But there are stirrings within his heart. He will soon be sent west to be the Shah's servant in Kermanshah, the land of his birth, and a figurehead of modernization. At once rich and bleak, The Age of Orphans unleashes a tapestry of untold horrors and pleasures, of blood and smoke, hopes, dreams and desires. It is a profound and darkly poetic story of a land roughly sewn together under the ambitious imagining of a nation, and of the life of a boy, whose identity does not, can not, unite with this vision.

Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the United States has experienced some outstanding periods that are unparalleled by any other nation. Such times of greatness have been achieved when this country most closely adhered to the faith-based morality intended by our founding fathers. A faith-based morality requires a belief that all humans receive their freedoms and unalienable rights from a Supreme Creator. That belief led to the formation of this nation. Greatness is achieved when government does most to extend such freedoms and rights to its own citizens and to all peoples of the world. Since the discovery of this nation by Columbus in 1492, the United States has been through periods of time that have been extraordinary in the results it has achieved for the rights of all human beings. In this book, the greatest moments of this country are compared to the morality the government followed during such periods
