Download or read book Pathfinder written by Richard R. Burns and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: December 1967: Richard Burns had just arrived in Vietnam as part of the fourteen-man 101st Pathfinder Detachment. Within just one month, during a holiday called Tet, the Communists would launch the largest single attack of the war--and he would be right in the thick of it. . . . In Vietnam, Richard Burns operated in live-or-die situations, risking his life so that other men could keep theirs. As a Pathfinder--all too often alone in the middle of a hot LZ--he guided in helicopters disembarking troops, directed medevacs to retrieve the wounded, and organized extractions. As well as parachuting into areas and supervising the clearing of landing zones, Pathfinders acted as air-traffic controllers, keeping call signs, frequencies, and aircraft locations in their heads as they orchestrated takeoffs and landings, often under heavy enemy fire. From Bien Hoa to Song Be to the deadly A Shau Valley, Burns recounts the battles that won him the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and numerous other decorations. This is the first and only book by a Pathfinder in Vietnam . . . or anywhere else.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Pathfinders: Presbyterian Laborers at Home and Abroad Interest in Mission Study ought to be maintained. To keep it constantly aroused suitable provision must be made for it. The first requisite is a text book. What more helpful or fascinating course of study could be provided than that which is furnished by these brief biographies? These life stories tell of heroic, self-denying services rendered in this country and in lands afar. The young people who read them should surely feel that they are "the heirs of as noble deeds as were ever done neath the all-seeing sun"; that they should make the most of the heritage, and that they should prove themselves worthy successors of those noble souls whose characters are here portrayed. The aims of the Committee when selecting subjects for treatment were to deal with each outstanding feature of our Church's work; and to pass under review the various fields in which our Church is laboring. These aims are, at least, measurably realized in the following pages. Possibly another committee would have selected different subjects, but it is only fair to say that the subjects herein treated were chosen after earnest and careful deliberation. Book excerpt: Precious Memories of Missionaries of Color, Vol. 2 profiles ninety-five black Seventh-day Adventist missionaries from 1892 to 2014 and is a follow up to Carol Hammond's book Precious Memories of Missionaries of Color, which was published in 2008 and featured the profiles of forty-nine families. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s, sabbatarian Adventism prior to organization of the denomination, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church since its organization in 1861-63, this volume provides a comprehensive history of the denomination. The first major element of the book is a chronology of Adventist history that begins with William Miller's conclusion in 1818 that the Second Advent of Jesus would occur about 1843 and extends through the Science and Theology Conferences of 2002-04. The interpretive introduction that follows places the emergence of Adventism within the context of the Second Great Awakening, describes the development of sabbatarian Adventism from its early opposition to church organization to its highly institutionalized and bureaucratically structured contemporary form, and examines the denomination's geographical expansion from a small North American sect to a global church. The dictionary entries that constitute the bulk of the volume address individuals, organizations, institutions, and doctrines that have been important in the history of the church, including dissident movements and individuals who have emerged as critics of the denomination and its beliefs. Second, there are entries on the development and current situation of Adventism in many individual countries. Finally, thematic entries on such subjects as art, music, literature, health care, and women address other elements important to understanding church life. The dictionary entries are followed by a bibliography of scholarly and popular works published by the denomination, commercial and academic presses, and individuals and organizations.

Download or read book Pathfinder written by David Blakeley and published by Orion. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine men. 2,000 enemies. No back-up. No air support. No rescue. No chance... First in - the official motto of one of the British Army's smallest and most secretive units, 16 Air Assault Brigade's Pathfinder Platoon. Unofficially, they are the bastard son of the SAS. And like their counterparts in Hereford, the job of the Pathfinders is to operate unseen and undetected deep behind enemy lines. When British forces deployed to Iraq in 2003, Captain David Blakeley was given command of a reconnaissance mission of such critical importance that it could change the course of the war. It's the story of nine men, operating alone and unsupported, fifty miles ahead of a US Recon Marine advance and head straight into a hornets nest, teeming with thousands of heavily-armed enemy forces. This is the first account of that extraordinary mission - abandoned by coalition command, left with no option but to fight their way out of the enemy's backyard. And it provides a gripping insight into the Pathfinders themselves, a shadowy unit, just forty-five men strong, that plies its trade from the skies. Trained to parachute in to enemy territory far beyond the forward edge of battle - freefalling from high altitude breathing bottled oxygen and employing the latest skydiving technology - the PF are unique. Because of new rules introduced since the publication of Bravo Two Zero, there have been no first-hand accounts of British Special Forces waging modern-day warfare for nearly a decade. And no member of the Pathfinders has ever told their story before. Until now. Pathfinder is the only first-hand account of a UKSF mission to emerge for nearly a generation. And it could be the last.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pathfinder is a novel in which West Point graduate Lincoln Davis comes to realize that Vietnamese orphaned girls were not being captured by enemy forces as assumed; rather, they were being forced into an international human trafficking scheme. With the assistance of a friend and fellow West Pointer, Lincoln Davis arranges for two Vietnamese sisters to testify against those who took the girls into captivity under the cover of war. In The Pathfinder, Lincoln Davis becomes a soldier at war with the known enemy in the jungles of Vietnam. The battles of an infantry unit in Vietnam present a variety of life-threatening challenges. However, the battle of the unknown enemy in a human trafficking scheme reveals that war comes in a variety of settings. Bringing the bad guys into court and providing a loving family for young displaced heroes doesn't guarantee that the battle is over in the end.
