Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for this book can be traced back many years to two major works that in?uenced the author’s outlook on applied physics: FerromagnetismusbyR. Becker,W. D ̈ oring (Springer, Berlin 1939), and Ferromagnetism by R. M. Bozorth (IEEE Press, New York 1951). The former work is a collection of lectures held in the 1930s for ‘technicians’ attending a technical college. The German language in which the work was originally written was extremely convenient for the author of this present book, as it was for a long time the only comfortable technical language in an English speaking environment. Later on, upon encountering the work by Bozorth, it was a relief to see the clarity and eloquence of the subjects presented in English, despite the impressive thickness of the book. Bozorth’s work still constitutes a practical review for anyone in a multidisciplinary industry who comes across the various manifestations of magnetism. The popularity of both works is so enduring that they are regarded as highly academic, and yet extremely readable, a reference in their own right, still attracting many readers these days in industry and academia. The ?eld of magnetism progressed immensely in the twentieth century, and shows no signs of slowing down in the present one. It has become so vast that it is quite often viewed only in its parts, rather than as a whole. In today’smyriadofapplications, especiallyonananoscale, andtheirchangeable implications mostly on a macroscale, it often seems that di?erent aspects of reported work on magnetism are scattered and unrelated.

Book Synopsis Principles of Nanomagnetism by : Alberto P. Guimarães
Download or read book Principles of Nanomagnetism written by Alberto P. Guimarães and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?eld of Nanomagnetism is a young branch of the study of magnetic phenomena, phenomena that have been a source of amazement and stimulus for speculation for more than 3,000 years [1]. Nanomagnetism, despite being a young area, has already affected every sphere of human activity, through its fundamental contribution to make the computer an ubiquitous instrument for communication, control of industrial processes, medical diagnosis, scienti?c investigation, or leisure. The studies of particulate and thin ?lm magnetic media and other related questions led to improvements that have mul- plied, in ?ve decades, the amount of data that can be encoded into a unitary area by some 50 million times. The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg, is an important recognition of the extraordinary achievements of the research in Na- magnetism. The unfolding revolution brought about by Spintronics is intimately c- nected, and enhances the relevance of these developments. Nanomagnetism already encompasses a very wide range of remarkable pr- erties and phenomena, as illustrated in the case of thin ?lms, for example, by the volumes of the series on Ultrathin Magnetic Structures [2].
Download or read book Magnetic Cell Separation written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell separation is at the core of current methods in experimental biology and medicine. Its importance is illustrated by the large number of physical and biochemical principles that have been evaluated for application to cell separation. The development of cell separation methods is driven by the needs of biological and medical research, and the ever-increasing demands for sensitivity, selectivity, yield, timeliness and economy of the process. The interdisciplinary nature of research in this area and the volume of information available in research publications and conferences necessitates a basic description of the fundamental processes involved in magnetic cell separation that may help the user in navigating this wealth of information available online and in scientific publications. This book will appeal to researchers in many areas utilizing this technique, including those working in cell biology, clinical research, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics and electrical engineering. - Provides examples of how to calculate the volume magnetic susceptibility, a fundamental quantity for calculating the magnetic force acting on a cell, from various types of magnetic susceptibilities available in literature - Introduces the elements of magnetostatics as they apply to cell magnetization and the magnetization of magnetic micro- and nano- particles used for cell separation - Describes the parameters used to determine cell magnetophoresis

Download or read book Your Atomic Self written by Curt Stager and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do atoms have to do with your life? In Your Atomic Self, scientist Curt Stager reveals how they connect you to some of the most amazing things in the universe. You will follow your oxygen atoms through fire and water and from forests to your fingernails. Hydrogen atoms will wriggle into your hair and betray where you live and what you have been drinking. The carbon in your breath will become tree trunks, and the sodium in your tears will link you to long-dead oceans. The nitrogen in your muscles will help to turn the sky blue, the phosphorus in your bones will help to turn the coastal waters of North Carolina green, the calcium in your teeth will crush your food between atoms that were mined by mushrooms, and the iron in your blood will kill microbes as it once killed a star. You will also discover that much of what death must inevitably do to your body is already happening among many of your atoms at this very moment and that, nonetheless, you and everyone else you know will always exist somewhere in the fabric of the universe. You are not only made of atoms; you are atoms, and this book, in essence, is an atomic field guide to yourself.
