Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories, Streets, and Saints documents the history of an important Italian American neighborhood, Boston's North End, from the age of immigration at the turn of the twentieth century to the era of neighborhood upheaval in the "New Boston" of the 1980s. Drawing on years of fieldwork, on-site photography, and scholarly research, Anthony V. Riccio records, translates, and transcribes compelling oral histories of elderly Italian American storytellers who weave social history in their unique village idiom, providing an intimate look at daily life in an Italian American neighborhood. Testimonies of post-Unification southern Italy reconstruct the dire social and economic conditions that caused millions to pursue the promise of America. Rare firsthand stories of the Spanish Flu offer timely narratives in the wake of COVID-19, and eyewitness descriptions reconstruct the horrific Molasses Explosion of 1919. Riccio's own photographs from 1979 to 1983, along with images from old family albums, illustrate these oral histories, creating a lasting record of the experiences of Italian Americans, who, like many other ethnic groups, contributed mightily to the building of America.

Book excerpt: Using interviews and photographs, Anthony Riccio provides a vital supplement to our understanding of the Italian immigrant experience in the United States. In conversations around kitchen tables and in social clubs, members of New Haven's Italian American community evoke the rhythms of the streets and the pulse of life in the old ethnic neighborhoods. They describe the events that shaped the twentieth century—the Spanish Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, and World War II—along with the private histories of immigrant women who toiled under terrible working conditions in New Haven's shirt factories, who sacrificed dreams of education and careers for the economic well-being of their families. This is a compelling social, cultural, and political history of a vibrant immigrant community.

Book excerpt: Four Women is a historical fiction taking place in Boston's colorful North End, "Little Italy" in the summer of 1949, a time when families lived together in a close-knit community, slightly larger than one square mile. Four Women touches on two cultures, the Italian world with its customs and traditions and what was termed the American world existing just beyond its boundaries, focusing on the spontaneity that so often arose through their interaction. Four Women is about family bonds and the central place the Church played in establishing worship, continuity, community and a feeling of safe harbor. This is the story of Lucia, matriarch of her family, widowed for 9 years, and her intense relationship with her three daughters: Angie, Stella and Carmela. Into this mix arises the unexpected love story of Pietro, the son of Velia Conte, a Roman noble woman, and Gerardo Petruzelli, a successful Lawyer, brother of Lucia.

Early chapters offer a historical survey of major developments in Italian American culture, from the early mass immigration period to the present day, situating these developments within the larger framework of American culture as a whole. Subsequent chapters examine particular works of Italian American literature and film from a variety of perspectives, including literary history, gender, social class, autobiography, and race. Paying particular attention to how the individual artist's personality has intersected with community in the shaping of Italian American culture, the book reveals how and why Italian America was invented and why Little Italys must ultimately disappear.

This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Brooklyn's sizzling restaurant scene, the hottest cookbook of the season... From urban singles to families with kids, local residents to the Hollywood set, everyone flocks to Frankies Spuntino—a tin-ceilinged, brick-walled restaurant in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens—for food that is "completely satisfying" (wrote Frank Bruni in The New York Times). The two Franks, both veterans of gourmet kitchens, created a menu filled with new classics: Italian American comfort food re-imagined with great ingredients and greenmarket sides. This witty cookbook, with its gilded edges and embossed cover, may look old-fashioned, but the recipes are just we want to eat now. The entire Frankies menu is adapted here for the home cook—from small bites including Cremini Mushroom and Truffle Oil Crostini, to such salads as Escarole with Sliced Onion & Walnuts, to hearty main dishes including homemade Cavatelli with Hot Sausage & Browned Butter. With shortcuts and insider tricks gleaned from years in gourmet kitchens, easy tutorials on making fresh pasta or tying braciola, and an amusing discourse on Brooklyn-style Sunday "sauce" (ragu), The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion & Kitchen Manual will seduce both experienced home cooks and a younger audience that is newer to the kitchen.
Book Synopsis I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919 (I Survived #19) by : Lauren Tarshis
Download or read book I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, 1919 (I Survived #19) written by Lauren Tarshis and published by Scholastic Paperbacks. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, a killer wave of molasses struck a crowded Boston neighborhood. Discover the story of this strange disaster in the next book in the New York Times bestselling I Survived series. There were warning signs that the molasses tank would break. The steel sides moaned and groaned. Molasses oozed from its seams. But the people of Boston's North End -- mostly poor immigrants -- were powerless to complain to the big molasses company. On a bright January day in 1919, the tank finally broke and almost three million gallons of molasses rushed the neighborhood. At 15 feet tall, 160 feet wide, and traveling at 35 miles per hour, the gooey wave was more destructive than any flood of water would have been. Lauren Tarshis tells the riveting story of one child who was swept up in the sticky storm and lived to tell the tale.
Download or read book Dark Tide written by Stephen Puleo and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around noon on January 15, 1919, a group of firefighters was playing cards in Boston's North End when they heard a tremendous crash. It was like roaring surf, one of them said later. Like a runaway two-horse team smashing through a fence, said another. A third firefighter jumped up from his chair to look out a window-"Oh my God!" he shouted to the other men, "Run!" A 50-foot-tall steel tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses had just collapsed on Boston's waterfront, disgorging its contents as a 15-foot-high wave of molasses that at its outset traveled at 35 miles an hour. It demolished wooden homes, even the brick fire station. The number of dead wasn't known for days. It would be years before a landmark court battle determined who was responsible for the disaster.

Book Synopsis Italians of the North End: A History of Grit, Perseverance & Tradition by : Patricia Annino
Download or read book Italians of the North End: A History of Grit, Perseverance & Tradition written by Patricia Annino and published by History Press. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North End - Boston's "Little Italy" - is an enclave with a rich history and a culture rooted in family, food and faith. Once home to hardworking immigrant families from Italy, it was also the neighborhood of Sacco and Vanzetti, Charles Ponzi and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Organizations like the North End Industrial Home and the North Benet Street School helped to educate and serve the community. With St. Leonard's of Port Maurice Church at its heart, la via vecchia (the old way) is woven through its narrow, winding streets, brick buildings, restaurants and pastry shops. Today, neighbors and tourists alike meet for coffee and cannolis, unaware of the neighborhood's complex history. Local author and resident Patricia Annino reveals the resilient journey from one of America's poorest slums to a place of opportunity.
