Because bits and pieces of stories and events came to mind in globs as I was writing at my desk. As a memory occurred, I immediately jotted it down and each glob became a story; hence, the title From Here to There and Other Places Too.

Book excerpt: A Wired Most Fascinating Book of the Year “An important book that reminds us that navigation remains one of our most underappreciated arts.” —Tristan Gooley, author of The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs “If you want to understand what rats can teach us about better-planned cities, why walking into a different room can help you find your car keys, or how your brain’s grid, border, and speed cells combine to give us a sense of direction, this book has all the answers.” —The Scotsman How is it that some of us can walk unfamiliar streets without losing our way, while the rest of us struggle even with a GPS? Navigating in uncharted territory is a remarkable feat if you stop to think about it. In this beguiling mix of science and storytelling, Michael Bond explores how we do it: how our brains make the “cognitive maps” that keep us orientated and how that anchors our sense of wellbeing. Children are instinctive explorers, developing a spatial understanding as they roam. And yet today few of us make use of the wayfinding skills that we inherited from our nomadic ancestors. Bond tells stories of the lost and found—sailors, orienteering champions, early aviators—and explores why being lost can be such a devastating experience. He considers how our understanding of the world around us affects our psychology and helps us see how our reliance on technology may be changing who we are. “Bond concludes that, by setting aside our GPS devices, by redesigning parts of our cities and play areas, and sometimes just by letting ourselves get lost, we can indeed revivify our ability to find our way, to the benefit of our inner world no less than the outer one.” —Science “A thoughtful argument about how our ability to find our way is integral to our nature.” —Sunday Times

Book excerpt: "Marie Bostwick is my go-to author…always powerful, inspiring, and uplifting." –Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author New York Times bestselling author Marie Bostwick welcomes readers to the quirky, unforgettable town of Too Much, Texas, in a heartwarming, richly satisfying story of friendship and moving forward… Mary Dell Templeton prefers the quiet charms of Too Much to the bright lights of Dallas any day. She's relieved to be moving back to her hometown--and bringing her cable TV show, Quintessential Quilting, with her. There are just a couple of wrinkles in her plan. Her son, Howard, who is her talented co-host and color consultant, and happens to have Down syndrome, wants to stay in Dallas and become more independent. Meanwhile, Mary Dell's new boss hopes to attract a different demographic--by bringing in a younger co-host. What Holly Silva knows about quilting wouldn't fill a thimble, but she's smart and ambitious. Her career hinges on outshining the formidable Mary Dell in order to earn her own show. Yet as Holly adapts to small-town living and begins a new romance, and Mary Dell considers rekindling an old one, the two find unlikely kinship. For as Mary Dell knows, the women of Too Much have a knack for untangling the knottiest problems when they work together. And sometimes the pattern for happiness is as simple and surprising as it is beautiful… Praise for Marie Bostwick and Her Novels "Fans of Debbie Macomber and Robyn Carr will enjoy this warm, witty novel of rediscovery and personal growth." --Booklist on The Second Sister "A story that touches women on many levels and yet is filled with humor and a bit of pathos." --Kirkus on Between Heaven and Texas "A brilliant storyteller." --Las Vegas Review-Journal on Threading the Needle “Marie Bostwick is my go-to author…always powerful, inspiring, and uplifting.” –Robyn Carr, #1 New York Times bestselling author “Bostwick showcase[s] her gift for writing with warmth and humor, putting her fully formed characters in realistic situations. Book excerpt: From Here to There celebrates these ephemeral documents--usually forgotten or tossed aside after having served their purpose--giving them their due as artifacts representing stories from people's lives around the world. There is the young woman suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who created maps of the Humira injections on her stomach and thighs to help her remember the sites, and give them time to heal. Or the young boy who imagined a whole country for ants and put it to paper. Lucas from Australia drew an obsessively detailed map of his local traffic island, and a teenage girl contributed a map of her high school locker. Two American tourists got lost in the Bulgarian mountains following the hand drawn map of a local, and Britanny from Denmark drew directions to an animal rights protest in Copenhagen. The maps featured in From Here to There are as varied and touching as the stories they tell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After having been stunned by untold evils making the order of each day in Africa, and particularly in his country, Alfani was compelled to address this in the form of a book. The ideas he suggests to alleviate the situation is what he regards as alternative strategies to develop a crumbling continent. Alfani believes that development should be given priority. He laments that most of the continent's resources are misused by a handful of citizens and dumped in the most worthless personal luxuries and expenditures such as civil and religious wars. About HIV/AIDS in Africa, he simply but firmly says that no matter how complicated the disease can be, the chance is that it can be reversed if there'll be a systematic paradigm shift in people's minds. From the experience of land reform in Zimbabwe as well as severe hunger caused by extremely low rate of food production in many African states, he scoffs the continent's inability to invest in the land. He also blames contemporary African leaders for their reluctance to embrace the breeze of development, and accuses politicians of treating ordinary citizens cheaply. In this book, he offers a simple definition of the word "development" when he equates it to a walk from where people have been getting delayed to where they would like to be. For Africa, this means joining other continents or even taking an extra mile. On the other hand, he warns his readers not to take his book as a compilation of some absolute "do's" but to consider it as a guide or help. The implementation of his suggestions is absolutely a personal issue. Alfani's book is not only engaging but also informative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle argues in On the Heavens 1.5-7 that there can be no infinitely large body, and in 1.8-9 that there cannot be more than one physical world. As a corollary in 1.9, he infers that there is no place, vacuum or time beyond the outermost stars. As one argument in favour of a single world, he argues that his four elements: earth, air, fire and water, have only one natural destination apiece. Moreover they accelerate as they approach it and acceleration cannot be unlimited. However, the Neoplatonist Simplicius, who wrote the commentary in the sixth century AD (here translated into English), tells us that this whole world view was to be rejected by Strato, the third head of Aristotle's school. At the same time, he tells us the different theories of acceleration in Greek philosophy.

Book excerpt: Getting from Here to There? seeks to take the study of sustainable cities into a realm of analysis and critique that has not been seriously investigated in any explicit and systematic manner: the sphere of power and politics. Using detailed case studies of selected urban sustainability programs-some stillborn or short-lived, others celebrated, still others most promising-it focuses on the political agencies shaping them and the structural elements either impeding or facilitating efforts to build sustainable cities. To accomplish this task, the authors utilize three theories or models of urban power-growth coalition, urban regime, and neo-Gramscian hegemonic-to explore the dynamics of power and politics to better understand these cases and to derive important lessons about getting from here to there. These models offer valuable lessons for ongoing or future sustainable city programs, community or business groups, key policy makers, grassroots organizations, mayors, and urban planners involved in or contemplating moving urban sustainability projects forward, as well as students of urban politics and environmental and sustainability researchers.

Book excerpt: Many of us have heard tragic stories of parents losing a child, but not many people could handle the abject grief of the deaths of three of their own children. Too Young To Be Angels: An Ongoing Journey of Grief is the heart-wrenching story of one mother's climb from the pits of despair, grief, and depression after the deaths of three of her four children. Author Shirley Delorbe struggles to hold on to reality when death seems to become a way of life. After her six-year-old son Randall's death in 1964 from acute trachea bronchitis, the road to recovery is long and hard. The question "Why me?" nags at Delorbe's subconscious. Her heart is only beginning to heal when her daughter Victoria's brutal murder four years later shocks the family. Almost at the breaking point, Delorbe fights simply to breathe as the death of her son Gerry in a motorcycle accident drags her back into hell a few years later. Too Young To Be Angels recounts Delorbe's journey as she struggles with the loss of each child, reveals her every thought, and shares how she eventually developed her ten steps to recovery.

Book excerpt: Her street name is Maybe She lives with a tribe of homeless teens -- runaways and throwaways, kids who have no place to go other than the cold city streets, and no family except for one another. Abused, abandoned, and forgotten, they struggle against the cold, hunger, and constant danger. With the frigid winds of January comes a new girl: Tears, a twelve-year-old whose mother doesn't believe her stepfather abuses her. As the other kids start to disappear -- victims of violence, addiction, and exposure -- Maybe tries to help Tears get off the streets...if it's not already too late. Todd Strasser, author of the powerful and disturbing Give a Boy a Gun, again focuses on an important social issue as he tells a thought-provoking, heart-wrenching story of young lives lost to the streets, and of a society that has forgotten how to care.
