Book excerpt: This dissertation examines historically the development of the Bataan Export Processing Zone (BEPZ). It aims to present critically the impact of the export-processing zone on the local community of Mariveles, Bataan. The period studied in this research includes the Zone’s first year of inception in 1972 up to 2014. The research used the Social Exchange Theory (SET) as a guiding force in decision-making regarding business relations in the Export Processing Zone. This study traces the historical description and creates a synoptic picture of the changes related to the operation of EPZ. To accomplish said objectives, the research is based on a great extent on available primary and secondary sources of information. Data are collected from government agencies records, annual reports, theses, newspapers, published reports, oral histories and unstructured interviews. This paper disputes the argument of some critics that there is no gain in the establishment of the EPZ because it is heavily funded by the government and foreign loans. In fact, the Bataan Export Processing Zone is successful with reference to the attainment of its main objective of increasing domestic employment. The socio-economic benefits result from the establishment of the economic zone and the provisions of the infrastructure external to the zone proper have positive spillover on the local community and eventually on the national economy.

Black Officer in a Buffalo Soldier Regiment tells the story of the man who—willingly or not—served as a standard-bearer for his race in the officer corps for nearly thirty years, and who, if not for racial prejudice, would have become the first African American general. Brian G. Shellum describes how, during his remarkable army career, Young was shuffled among the few assignments deemed suitable for a black officer in a white man’s army—the Buffalo Soldier regiments, an African American college, and diplomatic posts in black republics such as Liberia. Nonetheless, he used his experience to establish himself as an exceptional cavalry officer. He was a colonel on the eve of the United States’ entry into World War I, when serious medical problems and racial intolerance denied him command and ended his career. Shellum’s book seeks to restore a hero to the ranks of military history; at the same time, it informs our understanding of the role of race in the history of the American military.

Aside from the expansion of industrial gold mining, many countries have simultaneously witnessed an expansion of labor-intensive and predominantly informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Both trends are usually studied in isolation, which contributes to a dominant image of a dual gold mining economy. Counteracting this dominant view, this volume adopts a global perspective, and demonstrates that both industrial gold mining and artisanal and small-scale gold mining are functionally integrated into a global gold production system. It couples an analysis of structural trends in global gold production (expansion, informalization, and technological innovation) to twelve country case studies that detail how global gold production becomes embedded in institutional and ecological structures.
