Book excerpt: Major General William F. (Baldy) Smith was a genuine, but largely unsung hero of the Civil War. After he devised and carried out the plan that saved the Army of the Cumberland at Chattanooga, General Grant said," He [Smith] is possessed of one of the clearest military minds in the army; is very practical and industrious." Grant advocated making General Smith commander of the Army of the Potomac, replacing General Meade. For a variety of reasons, that didn't happen. General Smith was then assigned to command the Eighteenth Corps of the Army of the James under Major General Benjamin F. Butler, the man Lincoln called "The Damnedest Scoundrel". Grant expected Smith, "to keep him [Butler] straight in military matters". It was an impossible task. Butler was powerful politically, and in a presidential year, could not be controlled. Eventually, either Butler or Smith had to go, and Smith lost out. This book is the story about the life of Major General Baldy Smith, Vermont hero.

Book Synopsis The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History by : Gary W. Gallagher
Download or read book The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History written by Gary W. Gallagher and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederate States in the Civil War was and is an elaborate and intentional effort on the part of southerners to rationalise the secession and the war itself. Unfortunately, for historical truth and the national memory, these skilful propagandists, beginning with Jubal Early, have been so successful that the Lost Cause has assumed a life of its own and continues to misrepresent what really happened, distorting the national memory in the process. In this book, nine historians analyse the Lost Cause, describing its content and identifying its falsity. The work is thus a major contribution to Civil War historiography.

Download or read book William "Baldy" Smith written by Stephen Nicholas Siciliano and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauded for gallantry at Antietam and demoted for insubordination after Fredericksburg, Major General William "Baldy" Smith remains a controversial figure of the Civil War. His criticism of the Union high command made him unpopular with both peers and superiors. Yet his insight as an officer and an engineer enabled him to offer effective solutions to challenges faced by fellow generals. In this first comprehensive biography, Smith emerges as a field commander with deep concern for his men and a fearless critic of the failures of the Union generalship, who was recognized for a strategic perspective that helped save Federal armies.
Book Synopsis The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant: June 1-August 15, 1864 by : Ulysses Simpson Grant
Download or read book The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant: June 1-August 15, 1864 written by Ulysses Simpson Grant and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 2, 1864, Ulysses S. Grant postponed until the following morning an assault on Confederate lines near Cold Harbor planned for that afternoon because of delays in positioning troops. In the meantime, Confederate forces strengthened their lines, and the assault became a slaughter that haunted Grant for the rest of his life. Thus began a summer of frustration for the general-in-chief of the U.S. Army. By failing to press their advantage, Major General William F. "Baldy" Smith and Major General Ambrose E. Burnside in a six-week period fumbled two genuine opportunities to defeat Lee's army. Annoyed by the constant calls of Major Generals William S. Rosecrans and Samuel R. Curtis for reinforcements in Missouri and Kansas, he wrote that "I am satisfied you would hear the same call if they were stationed in Maine." Confederate forces commanded by Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early again threatened Washington, forcing Grant to send two army corps to defend the capital and to push the invaders back into the Shenandoah Valley. The pressure took its toll on his health: migraine headaches followed such setbacks as the battle of the Crater.

Download or read book General Ulysses S. Grant written by Edward G. Longacre and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new biography of General Ulysses S. Grant, acclaimed Civil War historian, Edward G. Longacre, examines Grant's early life and his military career for insights into his great battlefield successes as well as his personal misfortunes. Longacre concentrates on Grant's boyhood and early married life; his moral, ethical, and religious views; his troubled military career; his strained relationships with wartime superiors; and, especially, his weakness for alcohol, which exerted a major influence on both his military and civilian careers. Longacre, to a degree that no other historian has done before, investigates Grant's alcoholism in light of his devout religious affiliations, and the role these sometimes conflicting forces had on his military career and conduct. Longacre's conclusions present a new and surprising perspective on the ever-fascinating life of General Grant.

Book Synopsis The Fifth Massachusetts Colored Cavalry in the Civil War by : Steven M. LaBarre
Download or read book The Fifth Massachusetts Colored Cavalry in the Civil War written by Steven M. LaBarre and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1863, a long-anticipated military order arrived on the desk of Massachusetts Governor John Andrew. President Lincoln's secretary of war, Edwin Stanton, had granted the governor authority to raise regiments of black soldiers. Two units--the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry--were soon mustered and in December, Andrew issued General Order No. 44, announcing "a Regiment of Cavalry Volunteers, to be composed of men of color...is now in the process of recruitment in the Commonwealth." Drawing on letters, diaries, memoirs and official reports, this book provides the first full-length regimental history of the Fifth Massachusetts Cavalry--its organization, participation in the Petersburg campaign and the guarding of prisoners at Point Lookout, Maryland, and its triumphant ride into Richmond. Accounts of the postwar lives of many of the men are included.
