Download or read book Romantic Satanism written by P. Schock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criticism has largely emphasised the private meaning of 'Romantic Satanism', treating it as the celebration of subjectivity through allusions to Paradise Lost that voice Satan's solitary defiance. The first full-length treatment of its subject, Romantic Satanism explores this literary phenomenon as a socially produced myth exhibiting the response of writers to their milieu. Through contextualized readings of the major works of Blake, Shelley, and Byron, this book demonstrates that Satanism enabled Romantic writers to interpret their tempestuous age: it provided them a mythic medium for articulating the hopes and fears their age aroused, for prophesying and inducing change.

Download or read book William Blake and His Poetry written by Allardyce Nicoll and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is something in the madness of this man which interests me more than the sanity of Lord Byron and Walter Scott." Writes Wordsworth William Blake was completely detached from his contemporary writers. He transcended all norms and devised his own style, considered to be insane during his lifetime and later a revolutionary genius. This book takes you behind the scenes of the creation of Blake's art: poems and paintings. "The only way to the heart of a poem's meaning lies through a consideration of the circumstances in which it had its birth." Nicoll states as he displays said circumstances, giving the art a more relatable, humane nature. Jonathan Jones, 21st century literary critic, writes of Blake that he's "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced" with full awareness that Britain has produced the likes of Shakespeare and Dickens. So buckle up and prepare yourself to embark on a thrilling journey into the mind of this genius! "To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour." William Wordsworth

Book Synopsis The High Caul Cap by : Medbh McGuckian
Download or read book The High Caul Cap written by Medbh McGuckian and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Caul Cap is both the name of a traditional Irish air and a symbol for the link remaining after birth between mother and child. The caul was superstitiously regarded as a good omen and so kept at the hearth as a preservative against drowning. This symbolic gesture helps us to fathom the watery imagery in this volume, which traces the decline and death of the poet's mother. Medbh McGuckian's writing is always profoundly sensual, but now, with the maternal body at stake in its meditations, the physical takes on supernatural powers. Poetry relies on the senses for proof, much as the doubter relies on touch to be convinced of the miraculous. Mother-daughter relationships move down the generations ("I discover a photograph / of my beautiful sculpted daughter" from "Corner of Field with Farm") trying to establish the exact nature of their love. As in many of McGuckian's books, blue is a sacred color (of the Madonna, the sea, the sky) and saints and angels appear throughout the volume as though to remind us of how the masters used such icons to transform their myths into art. McGuckian uses these icons to grieve for, interrogate, and transform into poetry her late mother's "tangible gaze."
