Book excerpt: IN THE STEPS OF ST. PAUL By H. V. MORTON WITH MAPS. ILLUSTRATED FROM PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARY AND H. V. MORTON DODD, MEAD 8c COMPANY NEW YORK 1936 VI CONTENTS PAGE I see the stream in which Lydia was baptized. In Salonica I see a strange funeral and in Bercea, which is now called Verria, I am told something about St. Paul. CHAPTER EIGHT 295 I stay in Athens and meet a man called Sophocles and another called Byron. On the Acropolis and on the Areopagus I encounter the Athens of St. Paul. My friends introduce me to the life of modern Athens and, in the heat of afternoon, I bathe at Phaleron. CHAPTER NINE 331 I follow the steps of St. Paul from Athens to Corinth, where Amer ican archaeologists are revealing the city in which the Apostle preached. I climb to the summit of Aero-Corinth, meet a Greek who tells me something about peasant superstition and, journeying to Cenchreae, find that the once famous port is now a deserted bay. CHAPTER TEN 366 Describes a journey to Ephesus, the site of the Temple of Diana, and the theatre in which the silversmiths demonstrated against St. Paul, I voyage to Palestine, stay with Carmelite Fathers, and visit Caesarea. I then take ship to Malta, where I see the bay of the ship wreck, travel on to Naples, and reach Rome. My journey ends at the tomb of St. Paul. CHRONOLOGY OF ST. PAULS LIFE 479 HOW ST. PAUL Back lining INTRODUCTION THE modern traveller who takes the Acts of the Apostles as his guide-book, as I have done, journeys into a part of the world which once enjoyed the unity of the Roman Empire and is now divided among many nations. Where he is held up at national frontiers, to pass onward under a different flag and among men who speak a different tongue, St. Paul moved forward over a Roman road, speaking Greek all the time. It follows, therefore, that travel was easier for St. Paul than for those who follow him, for the great commercial highways along which he moved, and the famous ports from whose har bours he set sail, are no longer the main highways of the world. What was to St. Paul a progress along the best-known roads of the Roman Empire, becomes, to the modern traveller, a series of explorations from the beaten track. The harbour of Anti och is desolate, and Ephesus is a nesting-place for the stork. In the course of four journeys to the Near East, I was for tunate enough to traverse the varied territory of the three Pauline missions. For the guidance of those who may feel a desire to make this journey, ora part of it, I should say that there is nothing that cannot be done, given time and patience, and only in very remote places will the visitor feel compelled to make the Aristophanic inquiry Which inn is the least in teresting en tomologically Palestine and Syria are now, of course, well known to trav ellers, but Antioch and Aleppo are, naturally, more familiar to the French than to the English...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul was a city boy. This book tries to set Paul's ministry in the context of the cities he touched in his travels. A few of the cities Luke mentions are not covered--apologies to Beroea in Macedonia and the cities of Cyprus--but most are. The names of some of these cities--Philippi, Corinth, Rome, Thessalonica-- are well known to Bible readers because Paul wrote letters to them and these letters are in the Bible. But Paul never wrote a letter to Troas or Tarsus or Antioch of Syria as far as we know, and these cities are mostly unknown to the average reader even though some of them were major cities in Paul's time. Athens and Damascus are names everyone knows today but they may not know how these cities affected Paul. This book relates relevant information about these cities in which Paul lived and worked to his letters and the Book of Acts. The reader needs to be aware, however, that these studies are not technical, scholarly descriptions of the cities Paul visited. The chapters in this book contain studies that were presented on Wednesday nights after supper in a Baptist church. The author is sharing second hand information about cities that, for the most part, he has never visited. There is no new information here, but hopefully putting the cities up front will help make the stories in the book of Acts and in Paul's letters come alive. Those who are familiar with the literature on Paul's journeys will recognize the similarity between the title of this book--St. Paul and the Cities--and another book title, The Cities of St. Paul by Sir William M. Ramsay. Originally published in 1907, my introduction to the book came when it was reprinted in the 1960 edition during my seminary days. Since then it and the companion volume, St. Paul the traveller and the Roman Citizen (1897), have taught me most of what I know about the subject. Several footnotes in this volume will testify to my dependence but they do not begin to document all the basic knowledge about Roman cities that I've gained from him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to accompany St. Paul as he declared the Good News of salvation to thousands who lived in the Mediterranean region? Imagine your satisfaction when the council in Jerusalem mandates limited obligation to the Mosaic Law; and your frustration when the message of this freedom results in defamation and threats of death. Rejoice with Paul as the Roman Consul Gallio declares he is free to teach Jesus as Messiah. Follow Paul into the Antonia Fortress when assaulted by enraged Jews. Listen to his defense before Felix and Festus. Endure a life threatening shipwreck and imprisonment in Rome. Finally, stand by him as he approaches his last days as prisoner under Nero and his death; a victorious transition from a sainted physical life to a blessed and eternal spiritual life. Del Mueller takes readers into the thoughts and hearts of the key witnesses to Paul's missionary journeys. He writes a first person account that provides readers with a unique historical perspective on the stories as they really could have happened. Narratives of St. Paul's Missionary Journeys and Rome will personalize the post-resurrection events that altered the world and show readers the humanness of those who were changed because of Paul's message.

Following Luke's account in the Book of Acts and using evidence from Paul s own letters, he reconstructs the apostle s wide-ranging travels and describes the many places Paul visited as we encounter them today. In doing so he helps us to appreciate the issues that Paul confronted and to understand the motivation that drove him on. Enriched with boxed features outlining key timelines and topics, and supplemented with maps and street plans, this book is an ideal introduction to Paul and his travels for scholars at all levels of study.

Book excerpt: "Evidence and Paul's Journeys" is a fascinating historical investigation into the travels of the Apostle Paul. Here is what two noted scholars have written about it:"It is very encouraging to see that the most recent research...has been so carefully gathered together and presented in such a readable form. Jefferson White is to be commended for rendering such a service and his book deserves a wide audience."- Dr. Bruce Winter Warden of Tyndale House, Cambridge University"When I received Evidence and Paul's Journeys in the mail, I planned on skimming it for a minute or two and putting it on the shelf. That was a big mistake. Once I began, I could not put it down. The book encouraged my soul, not only about the historical facticity of the book of Acts, but also in making the events vivid and real. An open minded skeptic would benefit from this book and a convinced believer will enjoy the reality it breathes into the Acts narrative."- J. P. Moreland, Professor of Philosophy, Talbot School of Theology, Biola UniversityThe historical evidence that the book investigates includes:- the city, regional, and provincial political boundaries and titles mentioned in the book of Acts, some of which existed only in the middle of the first century.- the social and political characteristics unique to the cities and provinces that Paul visited.- the archeological findings that bear on the biblical narrative.- the distances that Paul traveled on land and on sea, and how long it took to cover those distances, according to the scriptures and to ancient and modern testimony.- the meteorological and nautical evidence relevant to Paul's travels by sea, including the spectacular confirmation of the details surrounding his shipwreck at Malta.- Paul's arrests and trials, and the legal maneuverings that took place in quite different jurisdictions, studied in the light of evidence about ancient law.- Paul's dealings with noted individuals who are also written about in pagan and Jewish historical accounts.- a comprehensive examination of the complex evidential relation between Paul's letters and the book of Acts. For the first time, all the historical details of Paul's journeys are found in a single book written for the general reader.
