Book excerpt: The accolades and high national rankings achieved by Elon University in recent years are not the sudden marvels they appear to be. The school's rise to national recognition has origins in its storied past, told in this heavily illustrated volume. From its modest beginning in the nineteenth century, Elon's history was marked by crises. Responses to them came to define the college's character. Drama informs the story of Elon University as it grew from a grove of oaks to occupy its current status on the national scene. A commitment to community, openness to innovation, and a penchant for planning and careful allocation of resources were deemed essential for survival, and they became hallmarks of the school, advancing it into the twenty-first century. The mythological phoenix of antiquity, arising from its own ashes, emerged again in 2000 as the symbol of a new Elon.

Book excerpt: Publisher description: Forty years ago, North Carolina's Elon College was struggling to attract students and remain solvent. Today Elon has emerged as one of America's most desirable colleges. How did this transformation happen? What can other colleges and universities learn from Elon's remarkable turnaround? Taking a new approach to the study of higher education, George Keller examines the decisions made by Elon's administration, trustees, and faculty to transform a school with a limited endowment into a top regional university. Using Elon as a case study, Keller sheds light on high-stakes competition among America's colleges and universities -- where losers face contraction or closure and winners gain money, talented students, and top faculty.

His second book, the New York Times bestseller Nature’s Best Hope, urged homeowners to take conservation into their own hands. Now, he is turning his advocacy to one of the most important species of the plant kingdom—the mighty oak tree. Oaks sustain a complex and fascinating web of wildlife. The Nature of Oaks reveals what is going on in oak trees month by month, highlighting the seasonal cycles of life, death, and renewal. From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to the beauty of jewel caterpillars, Tallamy illuminates and celebrates the wonders that occur right in our own backyards. Download or read book Tree Spirit Tarot written by Laural Wauters and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book only, the tarot deck must be purchased separately. Tree Spirit Tarot recounts the mythical and historical stories of 78 featured trees and their impact on our personal and collective understanding. By seeing how we are interrelated with trees, we can begin to reconnect to ourselves and each other. By bringing these shared stories to consciousness we awaken the tree of life within. This awakening is symbolic of our return to wholeness. Trees are reflections of our selves and our world. They are cross-cultural and archetypal symbols of the human condition. The Tarot was an illustrated deck of 78 cards that originated in 15th century Italy, its original name was "trionfi" meaning "triumphs," symbolizing the paths one takes through life. The tarot is divided into two groups: The Major Arcana, and the Minor Arcana. The journey of the Wonderer (Fool/Hero) is also reflected in the teachings of Kabbalah, known as the Tree of Life. The Kabbalah shows the path of the soul as it descends through the Tree of Life to become human and then transcends to spiritual oneness. Tree spirits by their very nature are wise, nurturing and without judgment. Their goal is to support us on our journey and to provide guidance whenever we need it. Their guidance is one of insight based on their unique history and botany. The card deck can be purchased at: https: //www.printerstudio.com/sell/designs/tree-spirit-tarot-deck.html

Book Synopsis The Tanoak Tree by : Frederica Bowcutt
Download or read book The Tanoak Tree written by Frederica Bowcutt and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) is a resilient and common hardwood tree native to California and southwestern Oregon. People’s radically different perceptions of it have ranged from treasured food plant to cash crop to trash tree. Having studied the patterns of tanoak use and abuse for nearly twenty years, botanist Frederica Bowcutt uncovers a complex history of cultural, sociopolitical, and economic factors affecting the tree’s fate. Still valued by indigenous communities for its nutritious acorn nut, the tree has also been a source of raw resources for a variety of industries since white settlement of western North America. Despite ongoing protests, tanoaks are now commonly killed with herbicides in industrial forests in favor of more commercially valuable coast redwood and Douglas-fir. As one nontoxic alternative, many foresters and communities promote locally controlled, third-party certified sustainable hardwood production using tanoak, which doesn’t depend on clearcutting and herbicide use. Today tanoaks are experiencing massive die-offs due to sudden oak death, an introduced disease. Bowcutt examines the complex set of factors that set the stage for the tree’s current ecological crisis. The end of the book focuses on hopeful changes including reintroduction of low-intensity burning to reduce conifer competition for tanoaks, emerging disease resistance in some trees, and new partnerships among tanoak defenders, including botanists, foresters, Native Americans, and plant pathologists.
