Book Synopsis Reconstructing the Fourth Amendment by : Andrew E. Taslitz
Download or read book Reconstructing the Fourth Amendment written by Andrew E. Taslitz and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern law of search and seizure permits warrantless searches that ruin the citizenry's trust in law enforcement, harms minorities, and embraces an individualistic notion of the rights that it protects, ignoring essential roles that properly-conceived protections of privacy, mobility, and property play in uniting Americans. Many believe the Fourth Amendment is a poor bulwark against state tyrannies, particularly during the War on Terror. Historical amnesia has obscured the Fourth Amendment's positive aspects, and Andrew E. Taslitz rescues its forgotten history in Reconstructing the Fourth Amendment, which includes two novel arguments. First, that the original Fourth Amendment of 1791—born in political struggle between the English and the colonists—served important political functions, particularly in regulating expressive political violence. Second, that the Amendment’s meaning changed when the Fourteenth Amendment was created to give teeth to outlawing slavery, and its focus shifted from primary emphasis on individualistic privacy notions as central to a white democratic polis to enhanced protections for group privacy, individual mobility, and property in a multi-racial republic. With an understanding of the historical roots of the Fourth Amendment, suggests Taslitz, we can upend negative assumptions of modern search and seizure law, and create new institutional approaches that give political voice to citizens and safeguard against unnecessary humiliation and dehumanization at the hands of the police.
Book Synopsis Old South Brooklyn Entrepreneur Anson Blake 1789-1868 by : Thomas L. Lawrence
Download or read book Old South Brooklyn Entrepreneur Anson Blake 1789-1868 written by Thomas L. Lawrence and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old South Brooklyn Entrepreneur is far more than a financial and commercial biography of Anson Blake 1789-1868. It provides many details of local history, not only of South Brooklyn (today’s Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook, Boerum Hill and Gowanus) before the Civil War, but of New York City’s economic history, including Anson Blake’s speculation in Wall Street area lands and buildings. Blake also speculated in Upstate New York’s Black River Canal region of Oneida, Hamilton and Herkimer counties where Anson Blake wanted a railroad to be built through his lots. Many interesting illustrations and photographs depict facets of Manhattan and Brooklyn history — including Blake’s early land and building speculation enterprises in South Brooklyn adjacent to the terminus of the original Long Island Railroad, and the Atlantic Street and Hamilton Avenue ferries. This book describes New York’s and Brooklyn’s history during the second quarter of America’s 19th century.
Book Synopsis The African American Electorate by : Hanes Walton
Download or read book The African American Electorate written by Hanes Walton and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have African Americans voted over time? What types of candidates and issues have been effective in drawing people to vote? These are just two of the questions that The African American Electorate: A Statistical History attempts to answer by bringing together all of the extant, fugitive and recently discovered registration data on African-American voters from Colonial America to the present. This pioneering work also traces the history of the laws dealing with enfranchisement and disenfranchisement of African Americans and provides the election return data for African-American candidates in national and sub-national elections over this same time span. Combining insightful narrative, tabular data, and original maps, The African American Electorate offers students and researchers the opportunity, for the first time, to explore the relationship between voters and political candidates, identify critical variables, and situate African Americans’ voting behavior and political phenomena in the context of America’s political history.

Download or read book Carmarthen Castle written by Neil Ludlow and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmarthen Castle was one of the largest castles in medieval Wales. It was also one of the most important, in its role as a centre of government and as a Crown possession in a region dominated by Welsh lands and Marcher lordships. Largely demolished during the seventeenth century, it was subsequently redeveloped, first as a prison and later as the local authority headquarters. Yet the surviving remains, and their situation, are still impressive. The situation changed with a major programme of archaeological and research work, from 1993 to 2006, which is described in this book. The history of the castle, its impact on the region and on Wales as a whole are also examined: we see the officials and other occupants of the castle, their activities and how they interacted with their environment. Excavations at the castle, and the artefacts recovered, are described along with its remaining archaeological potential. This book puts Carmarthen Castle back at the heart of the history of medieval Wales, and in its proper place in castle studies and architectural history, the whole study combining to make a major contribution to the history of one of Wales’s great towns.
