Book excerpt: Excerpt from Froebel's Occupations "These employments aim at and produce, first of all, in man, an all-sided development and presentation of his nature; they are, in general, the needful food for the spirit; they are the ether in which the spirit breathes and lives that it may gain power, strength, and, I might add, extent, because the spiritual qualities given by God to man, which proceed from his spirit in all directions with irresistible necessity, necessarily appear as manifoldness, and must be satisfied as such, and met in manifold directions." The gifts, occupations, and recreative exercises of the kindergarten were devised by Froebel to satisfy what he terms the eight instinctive activities of the child, "for play, for producing, for shaping, for knowledge, for society, and for cultivating the ground." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Varied Occupations in Weaving From the time that I received the first elements of Froe belian principles at the Home and Colonial Training College until the present, it has been my aim to use the Froebel gifts as the basis of all teaching, and when possible to apply the same excellent methods to other work of every-day usefulness. Froebel inculcated the broad and grand principles of the education and development of a child's faculties in the treatment of his gifts, but he never intended that the work should stop there; he left it for future generations to further develop and perfect his plans. If you doubt its persistence, look at Frau Luise Froebel, the widow of the Kindergartener. Upwards of forty years have passed since her husband was taken away from her, yet the ardor of her enthusiasm has not cooled in the least. She continues as she was when walking by his side, a living piece of his own self, in whose soul we can recognize and study the soul of. Friedrich F rochel. I have no hesitation in saying that Frau Luise Froe bel is the spiritual creature of Friedrich Froebel. He made her what she is: he implanted in her those remarkable principles and traits of. Character that distinguish her and elevate her above the common crowd. There is in her a depth of perception, a wealth of sentiment, a loving and never withhold ing, never weakening sympathy for all that is good and elevating, - chiefly for such things as concern the development of the good and beautiful in man, such as we know to have characterized Froebel him self. For all which constitutes the real life and genius of Frau Froebel, she is indebted to his teaching and his influence. His genius pervades her as the creative spirit giving life to her soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education by Doing, or Occupations and Busy Work, for Primary Classes In observing the results achieved by the Kinder garten, educators have felt that Froebel's great discovery of education by occupations must have something for the public school - that a further ap plication of the putting of experience and action in the place of books and abstract thinking, could be made beyond the fifth or sixth year of the child's life. This book is an outgrt of this idea, con ceived in the Spirit of the New Education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Park and Pavement A kindergarten - a children's garden. We have accepted the term for our language, but have not absorbed its fullest meaning. With this I do not say that Froebel, the most fundamental of all reformers, understood a kindergarten to consist of walks and lawn and plants with happy children as the fortunate possessors. I mean more. The writer of these paragraphs, who never attended an established kindergarten and yet enjoyed the kindergarten in its most unrestricted meaning, who developed in a profession on just such lines as Froebel laid down, feels it his duty to build upon and build out Froebel's lines with the aid of his professionalism. I have in mind a kindergarten which has added to all of Freebel's methods the fullest complement which nature can place within a child's reach and comprehension. This land of vast dimensions must do more than merely accept Froebel's teachings. 'we must improve upon them, and bestow upon them that liberality which is ours, as soon as an occasion appeals to us. The time is drawing close when the kindergartens will be made part of our free school system. How will we be prepared for such change? Shall we move from the empty stores and vacant flats, now set aside for our children, to the basements of the school buildings? Let us give the matter our most earnest study, and let us realize that it is easier to direct the run of a brooklet than to change the volume of a deeply bedded river. The broad acres of our United States are yet comparatively undivided, and, except where the most expensive real estate demands business buildings to tower Skyward, none are too costly to furnish the ground upon which our kindergartens shall be founded. Let us insist at the very outset of our movement upon the proper reservation, and nothing will prevent us from securing for our children what, through them, will redound to far more benefit to the land than the most gorgeous improvement we could devise. Book excerpt: The Froebel Gifts are perhaps the world's first educational toys. Developed in the early 1800's by Friedrich Froebel, inventor of Kindergarten, the Gifts appear deceptively simple but represent a sophisticated approach to child development. Over the last 180 years these intricately conceived playthings have had a widespread impact, becoming interwoven with the history of art/design, popular culture, and education. Inspiring and informing the work of Maria Montessori, Rudolf Steiner, and others, Froebel's Gifts influenced Frank Lloyd Wright, Albert Einstein, Kandinsky, Klee, and more while Mattel used them in designing Tinker Toys, Color Cubes, and Unit Blocks. In Making Classic Toys That Teach, Doug Stowe, a professional woodworker and teacher, presents the history and valuable benefits of each gift while providing step-by-step instruction on how to build each toy and the box to hold them. Each of the 10 Froebel Gifts are featured: 1) balls of yarn, introducing color, shape and motion; 2) sphere, cylinder, and cubes on a hanging device; 3) divided cube building blocks; 4) rectangular blocks; 5) wooden cubes and triangular blocks; 6) geometric building blocks in various shapes; 7) colorful geometric shapes; 8) sticks and rings; 9) points - small colorful objects, like beads - that can be connected to create dotted lines, etc; 10) framework in the form of fiddlesticks or tinker toys. As the backlash towards our overly technological world increases, the philosophy of Froebel and an understanding of the value of his Gifts is part of the trend of more focused playtime and creative thinking for younger children that will help them make connections on their own regarding the world around them.
